A Friendly Game
I won’t lie to you, I am not a chess player.
My husband and son are, though, and they both thought chess quilt blocks would be a great idea!
Each chess piece measures 2″ x 5″ (2 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ unfinished) with additional instructions to make 5″ (5 1/2″ unfinished) blocks.
The mock up I’ve done above in EQ7 is the wall hanging I’m planning for my hubby. He needs a little quilted love at work!
In addition to the patterns for the individual blocks, the pattern also includes a handy chart to help you make a chess quilt! Use the patterns as-is for a 40″ x 40″ quilt, or enlarge (or reduce!) for a quilt the size of your choice!
A Friendly Game
chess pieces to paper piece
6 – 2” x 5” (2 1/2” x 5 1/2” unfinished)
5” (5 1/2” unfinished) with side sashing
Included six paper pieced chess patterns and a simple chart to help create your own chessboard quilt!
Pattern also available through Craftsy!
My patterns, as always, as as simple as I can make them for ease of printing and understanding. Whenever possible, I make patterns printable in black and white. After all, we’d rather spend money on fabric than ink for our patterns!

Love the chess pieces! I’m not a player but my older brother is. He was taught by a very special friend of the family we called Uncle Bill. He was also the one who taught same brother to speak french and my oldest to say Yahooey! Known to oldest as Yahooey Bill! Such memories!!
This would be a Great Quilt!
I purchased the pattern. Love it! But….I think the amount of fabric required for the background is incorrect. Could you please check the amount and let me know for the 40″ size?
I finished the baby quilt a week before the little prince arrived! Thought you might like to to see a game “in play” but I do not know how to upload a picture from my phone via phone.
Oh, awesome, I would LOVE to see it!
I purchased this pattern a while ago and I’m finally able to get around to it. I was wondering, as this is my first paper pieced pattern, could you possibly let me know how you do it? Or recommend a tutorial that is similar to your style.
Thanks!
Never mind, I just found your tutorial. Silly me.
Thanks!
I’m so glad you found what you needed!
