2015 UFO To Do List Report Card!

My #finish2015 #ufo list. The oldest on this list is 2007!
For quite a few years now,  I’ve begun January with a To Do List for UFO projects that I would like to tackle and hopefully finish or at least move to The Next Step for the year.

You may have seen that my 2016 list is done and it is a doozy!

This is my 2015 Report Card.

See my 2015 To Do list, including photos of where each project stood at the beginning of last year.

Today’s recap doesn’t include every project finished in 2015 such as stuff made for tutorials or my new patterns (there were loads last year!). These are just the projects from last year’s To Do List and a couple of unexpected big finishes.

Progress! #AsYouWish #princessbride #fandominstitches

As You Wish (Princess Bride Quilt) –

January 2015 Status: WIP – From the quilt along on Fandom In Stitches in 2014. I have just under half of the letters hand stitched in place and then it needs to be quilted. I have backing and batting ready to go.

Current Status: AT THE QUILTER – My AYW top was completed in March of last year. It’s at a friend’s who is a long arm quilter with a promise date of April. Once it’s home, it’ll need binding and a label.

Frogger quilt for The Linus Connection

Frogger

January 2015: UFO. Designed in 2014 for fandominstitches.com, I’d like to make this bigger (it’s currently 24″ square), finish it up and donate it to The Linus Connection.

Current Status: COMPLETED and donated to The Linus Connection in Februar 2015. I forgot how much I loved this quilt!

Whew! #blanketcharity #charityblanket #nonprofit #quiltforgood #TheLinusConnection This was given to me as an unfinished project because it's paper pieced. I completed the top and friend Marge quilted it. It's now bound and ready for donation to thelinusconnection.org. Unfortunately, I don't know the quilter that started it. Whoever the

Orphan Blocks For Linus

2015 Status: ONGOING. While not technically a UFO, I’m including these here as a reminder to myself to work on quilts for Linus from donated blocks. I collect blocks from anyone that might like to donate and save them until I have enough to make a quilt to donate to The Linus Connection. Want to donate? Drop me an email (sewhooked@gmail.com).

Current Status: ONGOING PROJECT, 7 COMPLETED IN 2015! – I continue to collect and work on orphan block quilts as well as Stars for Linus. Last year, I created a flickr album to track my progress with these quilts.

Untitled
Harry Potter Swap Quilt

January 2015: WIP – This is the second of two quilts made from Harry Potter quilt block swaps from way back in 2007 or so. This quilt is basted and free motion quilting is in progress, The borders are quilted. Each block still needs quilting and then it needs to be bound and labeled. On hold while I have my sewing machine serviced.

Current Status:  COMPLETE! – Borders were added in March. I started quilting this one and my previous machine started having timing issues and I set it aside. After months not working on it, I picked it back up, ripped out the first attempt at quilting, and finished the whole thing in November. It now lives in my living room with our other family snuggle quilts.

2013 Project To Do List

Vintage Quilt Top

January 2015: UFO . My hubby bought this for me for our anniversary several years ago. I have a back and batting for this quilt, but it still needs basting and quilting. It hasn’t happened yet because I’m still undecided on how to finish it. Fingers crossed for inspiration!

Current Status:  Inspiration did not strike. Boo.

TABABOM top

TABABOM

January 2015: WIP. 2012 Hobbit-themed Block of the Month on Fandom In Stitches.  This quilt is now basted and ready to FMQ. It’s in the queue after my Harry Potter Swap Quilt (above).

Current Status: Mostly Unchanged. The quilt is still basted. I dropped down the list of things to do when I started having sewing machine issues while fmqing early last year. I have a Juki now that quilts like a boss and TABABOM is  back on the menu! I’ve changed my quilting plan and am going to unbaste it and piece the signature blocks (below) into the back before quilting.

2013 Project To Do List

TABABOM Signature Quilt

January 2015: UFO. Similar idea to the Project of Doom signature quilt. I’m missing a block from one of the designers, but I have a plan for moving forward, so hopefully this will change to WIP very soon!

Current Status: To be included as part of the back of the TABABOM (see above).

Hand embroidered flower quilt

Embroidered Flower Quilt

January 2015: WIP. This was a 2011 BOM by a blogger that is no longer online. Borders added, have back & binding. To be quilted & bound.

Current Status: Unchanged.

First #finish of 2016 for #TheLinusConnection. The pattern is Topsy Turvy Trees, available in my pattern shop. This top has been on my "to quilt" list since 2012. #ufo2016 #charityquilt #quiltforgood

Topsy Turvy Trees

January 2015: UFO. Needs a back and to be quilted, bound. One of my original designs.

Current Status: Complete! To be donated to The Linus Connection later this month. I finished this up after making this year’s list, so it does show up there, but it was officially finished earlier this month.

First #finish of 2016! I started to make my #ufo2016 list yesterday and couldn't bear to have this one on there once again. Beautiful Australia themed fabrics were a gift from my friend Cat. I paired them with #benartex Fossil Fern and used my Chocolate B
Australian Fabric Quilt

Australia Fabric Project

January 2015: USO.  Fabric gifted over several years from my friend Cat. I picked the pattern a couple of years ago.I plan to pre-cut all the pieces before I go on Retreat with my bee in March.

Current Status: Complete! I completely changed plans on this quilt after designing the Chocolate Box block for another project. I’m including the pattern I originally planned to use for reference. This baby was basted, quilted and bound by me. It now lives on my bed and I LOVE it.

Project of Doom for my sister, bound, labeled and ready to gift! Quilted by sarahssewingstudio.com. Designed by me. Free patterns on sewhooked.com and fandominstitches.com. So happy to see this completed! #projectofdoom #fandominstitches #harrypotter #pod

I had another BIG finish last year that wasn’t on this list. Early last year, I started a Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt (aka, The Project of Doom) for my sister. It was pieced during the 2015 Project of Doom Quilt Along on Fandom in Stitches. All patterns designed by me and free both here and on FiS. Quilted by the very talented Sarah from Sarah’s Sewing Studio. Go, have her quilt a thing for you!

Quilt For Amelia, completed 2015 Quilt For Amelia, completed 2015
A bonus finish, added to my To Do list after the list was originally made in January, is Amelia’s Quilt. The original quilt top was machine pieced by my mother-in-law Carol’s mother. Carol started adding a border and had hoped to have this completed for her granddaughter, my niece. We lost Carol in February last year before she had the chance to finish stitching the border on. She’d talked to me at length about this project and I knew she wanted it done in time for Amelia’s birthday. I brought it home and it sat for months because I couldn’t face working on it. A few weeks before Amelia turned 6, I got it out, consulted some friends and got to work. There were a lot of emotions while I worked and it was somewhat cathartic to have it complete and in Amelia’s hands by her birthday.

2015 UFO Report Card

Unchanged – 4

Bonus Big Finishes – 2

Thirteen complete? I’ll take it!

Here’s to a VERY productive 2016!

I’ll see you tomorrow on Talk to Me Tuesday! ♥

2014 UFO To Do List Report Card

Making it real. #finishin2014

For the last several years, I’ve started January with a To Do List for projects past that I would like to tackle and (hopefully!) finish for the year.

This is my 2014 Report Card!

See my 2014 To Do list, including photos of where each project stood at the beginning of last year. Today’s recap doesn’t include projects started and finished in last year, just UFOs from previous years.

2014 UFO projects in an IKEA bag

The entire list in one bag,  sorted by project and ready to work on as of January ’14.

1. HP Swap Quilt

Harry Potter Swap Quilt

January 2014 Status – WIP.  This is the second of two quilts made from Harry Potter quilt block swaps from way back in 2007 or so. Pieced with border. Have batting & backing fabric.  Needs to be quilted and bound. I’m planning on binding in red so the pale blue border has a solid stop.

Current Status – WIP, with progress – This quilt is basted and free motion quilting is in progress, The borders are quilted. Each block still needs quilting and then it needs to be bound and labeled. On hold while I have my sewing machine serviced.

2.  Vintage quilt top

2013 Project To Do List
January 2014 Status – UFO. My hubby bought this for me for our anniversary several years ago. In needs to be quilted, possibly by hand. Needs a back & binding. I’m thinking muslin for the back.

Current Status – UFO with progress. I now have a back and batting for this quilt, but it still needs basting and quilting. It hasn’t happened yet because I’m still undecided on how to finish it. Fingers crossed for inspiration!

3. Vintage Churn Dash Quilt
Finished Quilt - Vintage Churn Dash + Snowballs

January 2014 Status – WIP. Vintage churn dash blocks with supplemental snowball blocks made with replica fabrics. Has borders, backing and batting. Needs to be quilted & bound.

Current Status – Complete! This was my last UFO finish of 2014. I free motion quilted and bound machine bound it. It washed up beautifully and is now my favorite snuggle quilt.

4. Green/Purple 10 minute block quilt

Did I also mention I finished a #ufo today? For donation to #TheLinusConnection. #finish2014

January 2014 Status – WIP. Green charm swap from TTMT 2011 or so, I think. Borders added, have backing and batting. To be quilted/bound. Made using the 10 minute block quilt tutorial on YouTube.

Current Status – Complete! Free motion quilted, bound and donated to The Linus Connection in March 2014.

5. Project of Doom Signature Quilt
Project of Doom Signature Quilt
January 2014 Status – WIP. Blocks from the 2011 Participants of The Project of Doom. I love this quilt. Adore it. Quilted by Shannon Shaw. It needs binding. Seriously, I’ve gotta get on that!

Current Status – Complete! Bound with scrappy binding in Hogwarts House colors. I’m so pleased to have this one done! It’s even more gorgeous (and more special!!) in person. It’s the prefect companion to my 2011 Project of Doom Quilt.

6. There and Back Again Block of the Month (TABABOM)

TABABOM top

January 2014 Status – WIPish. 2012 Block of the Month on Fandom In Stitches. Have backing, batting and binding. Not yet quilted.

Current Status – WIP. This quilt is now basted and ready to FMQ. It’s in the queue after my Harry Potter Swap Quilt (above).

7. Project – There and Back Again signature blocks.

2013 Project To Do List

January 2014 Status – UFO. Similar idea to the Project of Doom signature quilt. I’m missing a block from one of the designers, so I have put off working on it. To be pieced into a top. Will need fabric for sashing and possible center piece, possibly the name of the event with dates in embroidery.

Current Status – UFO. I’m still missing a block for this quilt, but I have a plan for moving forward, so hopefully this will change to WIP very soon!

8. Embroidered block quilt top

Hand embroidered flower quilt

January 2014 Status – WIP. This was a 2011 BOM by a blogger that is no longer online. Borders added, have back & binding. To be quilted & bound.

Current Status – UFO. No change since January 2014.

9. Topsy Turvy Trees

2013 Project To Do List

January 2014 Status – UFO. Needs a back and to be quilted, bound. One of my original designs.

Current Status – UFO. No Change since January 2014.

10. Australia fabric from Cat

Australia Fabric Project

January 2014 Status – UFO. (Actually, USO…UnStarted Object!). I’ve picked a pattern I like, and that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I need to find an accent fabric and cut this puppy out!

Current Status – UFO. No change since January 2014, but I do have plans to decide on accent fabric and pre-cut all the pieces before I go on Retreat with my bee in March.

11. Flannel Quilt Blocks.

Quilt as you go with raggy edge.

January 2015 Status – UFO. These were unearthed during the same archaeological dig that found the Flannel Quilt included in my 2013 Recap. I have no idea why these weren’t on last year’s list. No matter, they are on this year’s! These fabrics are from pajamas my kiddos had when they were small. As in pre-school and elementary small. Yeah. Anyway, to be made into a quilt for donation to The Linus Connection.

Current Status – Complete! I used a Quilt As You Go technique, and completed the quilt with raggy edges instead of binding. I had very little flannel to work with and decided to not add borders. Donated to The Linus Connection in March 2014.

12. Mustachio! quilt

Mustachio!

January 2014 Status – UFO. Has backing and batting. Needs to be quilted. One of my original designs.

Current Status – Complete! As of June, my Mustachio blocks are finally a quilt! I fmq’d it, complete with “hair” quilting in the mustaches. Mustachio now lives at the top of my stairs and never fails to illicit a chuckle or two when visitors first see it.

13. Misc. Published Blocks

Misc. Published Blocks

January 2014 Status – UFO? WIP? Kinda Both. This is the bag where I stash blocks I’ve designed for magazines, blog hops, events, etc., when I don’t have a project in mind for them. I’d like to do, I don’t know…something…with at least some of these this year. I have another bag just like this of unpublished designs. Mayhap I’ll do something with those, too!

Current Status – UFO. No change since January 2014, except that this bag now has more miscellaneous published designs in it and no plan for what to do next! I may remove this from the list in 2015.

14. Garden Party Blog Hop Blocks
2014 04 April Linus Donation (14)
January 2014 Status – UFO; 8 of 30. Way back in 2012, I hosted the Paper Pieced Pattern A Day Garden Party Blog Hop (the link goes to a round-up of all the designs). It was an amazing events, with 30 designers and 30 designs, one for every day in April, 2012. Between hosting, running three blogs, and having my first pattern published in a magazine, I kind of got lost and my blocks ended up in a bag collecting dust. I would love, at the very least, make some progress on these this year.

Current Status – As Complete as it’s going to be! I ended up using 7 of the 8 blocks I originally made during the Paper Pieced Pattern A Day Garden Party Blog Hop, added two Stars for Linus blocks that I received in the mail (sorry, I don’t remember who they came from!) added sashing & borders, free motion quilted the top and donated it to The Linus Connection in April 2014. I love the way this came out, even thought it’s only a fraction of the original designs intended for the quilt. Incidentally, swirls are one of my favorite things to fmq!

15. Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Not All Who Wander Are Lost blocks My Northcott Stonehenge collection

January 2014 Status –  UFO. 2 of 29. NAWWAL was hosted by Lilja on my fandom quilt blog, Fandom In Stitches. I had every intention of making this quilt. See that on the right? That’s my collection of Stonehenge fabric kept specifically so this project will match my There and Back Again quilt. Despite my best intentions, the only blocks I made for these event are the two I designed for it. Like the Garden Party quilt, I would like to make some progress this year.

Current Status – Removed from To Do list. While I really would like to make this quilt someday, I just have not felt inspired to work on it. I’ve removed it from my To Do list for the time being to work on other things. My Stonehenge stash is being used for my 2015 Project of Doom instead.

16. Orphan Block Quilt 2013, #2
March 2014 - Orphan Block Quilt
January 2014 Status – UFO. One of three made from orphan blocks for donation to The Linus Connection. These were slice and dice 9 patch blocks left over from a quilt I made for a friend’s wedding way back in 2007. Needs borders, backing, batting & binding.

Current Status – Complete! Free motion quilted, bound and donated to The Linus Connection in March 2014.

17. 1980s T-Shirts

1980s t-shirts

January 2014 Status – Something. UFO. I’ve saved the most dubious project for last. Many years ago, before I ever held a rotary cutter or knew anything about squaring up, paper piecing, half-square triangles, batting, free-motion quilting or any other quilting term you might like to throw out, I got the crazy idea to cut up my favorite t-shirts from high school for a quilt-type project. Maybe a bag or pillow? I don’t know what I was thinking, but I can tell you I chopped without impunity, leaving very little seam allowance to work with. After years… And Years… And a few more YEARS stuffed in a bag on a shelf, I brought these memories of high school out into the light. This year, I will do something with them. I have no idea what, but something. It’s high time to get them off my self. Besides, I like a challenge. Ehem.

Current Status – Removed from List. As sad as I am to do it, I’ve removed this project entirely from the list. Many of the t-shirts had dry rot and weren’t worth saving. I kept a couple for nostalgia reasons and let the rest go to the great T-Shirt Store In the Sky.

18. Bonus! Orphan Block Quilts
2014 04 April Linus Donation (6)2014 04 April Linus Donation (8)

2014 04 April Linus Donation (11)Orphan block quilt for #TheLinusConnection! Feel free to tag yourself if you contributed blocks. Quilted by Marge. #blanketcharity #orphanblocks #craftforgood
January 2014 Status – Orphan Blocks. While these were not originally on the list, they were in my stack To Do for 2014. I have an ongoing collection of orphan blocks made both by myself and donated by other quilters all over the world (want to donate? just email me! sewhooked@gmail.com). Many of these blocks were donated prior to 2014 with a few newer blocks thrown in.

Current Status – Four Completed Quilts, Block Collection Still Ongoing. Four completed quilts, donated to The Linus Connection in 2014. I finished the top three at quilt retreat last year and donated them in March & April as I finished the fmq and binding. The fourth one was quilted by my friend and fellow Linus volunteer Marge and turned in later in the year.

2014 UFO To Do List

2014 UFO Report Card

Finished – 7

Unchanged – 4

Removed from List – 3

WIP – 3

Bonus Finishes – 4

Well, well, that’s not too bad, especially considering all I had going on in 2014, including Paper Piecing Vintage, As You Wish (look for my Princess Bride quilt on this year’s UFO list…oops!), two Quiltmaker Blog Tours and a number of other small events, deadlines, swaps and new projects! It was a very productive year and I’m quite happy with my progress.

Hardest of all, I think, was assessing what I had done and what I was likely to do and actually removing items from the list. I’d like to be more realistic about what I want to do in future and hopefully not drown myself in a list of new projects that end up on yet another UFO list!

How did you do in 2014? Did you keep track? Do you have a recap that you shared online? If you do, please do share a link in comments!

Now, to assess what I have to do for 2015 and make a brand new list! Let’s hope this one is a bit shorter…

2013 To Do List…Recap (at last!)

sewhooked to do 2013 At the beginning of the last few years, I have recapped the UFO projects accumulated at the beginning of the previous year to see how much progress I made on each one. These lists do not include new projects that popped up over the year, though newbies often make an appearance on the following year’s list! When 2013 began, and I made my 2013 list, I was working full time outside of my home. After half a year of burning the candle not only at both ends, but in the middle too, I realized the life I was leading was not working for myself or for my family. When I left my full-time position, I fell right back into Sewhooked and, most importantly, back to my family.

Definitions of some initialisms used in this post:

UFO = UnFinished Object – a project that has been set aside and allowed to collect dust. Chances are it’s existence has been forgotten until it’s pulled out of whatever dark hole it was stuffed into. While there, it probably multiplied like Tribbles, leaving many more UFOs than you remember putting there in the first place.

USO = UnStarted Object – a project that has yet not made it out of it’s incubation period. Often comes in the shape of a stack of fat quarters, a jelly roll or other similarly delicious fabric apparition. Can also appear as a pattern or book with little hearts doodled on the cover. Hopes to be a…

FO = Finished Object – What all projects dream of being. The object of much blog activity and excitement and a good source of personal pride. The Ultimate Destination of a UFO and WIP.

2013 Project To Do List

Project – 2011 Five @ The Hive block of the month, designed by Sue Carter January 2013 – Need to add top & bottom border, quilt and bind.  Have border, backing and binding fabric.

2013 To Do - Done! 5 @ The Hive Quilt from 2011

Status – FO and Gifted! Discussed in this TTMT (6:40 or so). Quilted by my friend Osie and given to my in-laws last year.

2013 Project To Do List

Project – Harry Potter Alphabet Quilt, designed by me. January 2013 – To be quilted & bound. Have back/binding fabric.

This is only ph0to of the top I could find and it’s on the wall at the very beginning of this TTMT. I won’t lie, watching this video brought on the tears. Project – Fabric collection from Kristel, won from one of her TTMT drawings. January 2013  NEW PROJECT – I would like to make this into a new bag for myself! Fancy that!

Status – Not even a UFO.  I picked a bag pattern and then changed my mind. I’m considering sharing the love and passing this on as a prize.

Summary – Not bad, not bad! That’s seven completed quilts, one quilt that just needs a binding, several completed tops and a couple of projects that just need to get a little closer to done. I’m always equally surprised by A) how much I finished and B) what I forgot completely about.

Now, to work on my 2014 list!

Feel like being challenged to work on your UFOs in 2014? Pren, from The Convivial Crafter, a long time crafty friend of mine, has started a crafty support group Facebook group for just that reason! Her goal: One finished UFO per month! Totally doable, right?! Join UFO Project 2014. There are drawings and stuff!

12 for 2012 and 2011 UFO Recap!

For the last couple of years, I’ve started off with a recap of my UFOs from the last year and how far along I got with them. While I set general goals for myself, I have never done anything quite as organized as 12 for 2012.

With that in mind, I’d like to recap my 2011 UFO list and share my goals for this year! It makes for a big post…I hope you enjoy!

For your convenience, my own version of these definitions:

UFO = UnFinished Object – a project that has been set aside and allowed to collect dust. Chances are it’s existence has been forgotten until it’s pulled out of whatever dark hole it was stuffed into. While there, it probably multiplied like Tribbles, leaving many more UFOs than you remember putting there in the first place.

WIP = Work In Progress  – Always in danger of becoming a UFO, a WIP is a project that is currently being worked on, and will hopefully become a…

FO = Finished Object – What all projects dream of being. The object of much blog activity and excitement and a good source of personal pride. The Ultimate Destination of a UFO and WIP.

See my 2010 UFO list and the follow-up post.

See my 2011 UFO list.

The date in parenthesis is the birth year of each project.

Hand Applique (2010)

  •  10/12 (October)

Harry Potter/Magical Swap blocks (2007/2008)

10" HP swap blocks that need to be a quilt Misc Blocks received from Swaps

  • 2011 status –UFO – Despite laying these blocks out, hanging them on my design wall and thinking about them way too much, I did not do a darn thing with them.
  • 2012 goal – FO– I’m saving this for later in the year because I have no idea where to go with it. I need it off my plate, though, so on the list it goes!
  •   11/12 (November)

Churn Dash/Snowball (2011)

12 for 2012
  • 2011 status –WIP – I lucked into a set of vintage churn dash blocks last year just a few weeks before going on retreat in March. I picked up vintage reproductions of creams and red on our mini shop-hop on the way to retreat. The snowballs were pieced and assembled, then the top pieced, at retreat.
  • 2012 goal – FO– Add a border with more of the repro fabrics I’ve collected. Possibly flying geese? Possibly hand quilt.
  •   12/12 (November)
There and Back Again (2011)

There and Back Again Block of the Month (TABABOM) #3

  • 2011 status –NEWThere and Back Again is a BOM hosted on my other website, Fandom In Stitches. The BOM will finish up in November of this year. All patterns are free. Designs by myself, Michelle Thompson, Lilja Björk Sigurdórsdóttir and Schenley Pilgram.
  • 2012 goal – FO – but I’m not including it in the 12 for 2012. I have no doubt this one will get done!

Half-Square Triangle Exchange (2010)

1/2 square triangles from exchanges

  • 2011 status – UFO-ish – These blocks were plundered for several projects, including making more Bear Paws. I still have tons of these.
  • 2012 goal – Undecided – These are going to remain in my UFO pile for now.

Well, I think that’s it. I decided not to include my crochet list from last year, though I did finish the Black and Red afghan.

This is not even remotely everything I worked on in 2011, but it is a good solid list of my personal projects!

You can find all my for sale designs in the Sewhooked Shop. There were several newbies last year, including Aces High, Two Little Hooters, Fairy Tale Femmes and Turkey Talk! I have more fun designs up my sleeve!

Pre-Treat Thoughts

It’s early (for a Saturday morning) and I’m giving myself this much time *holds up fingers* to try and get caught up before today’s Linus meeting.

I’m in hardcore pre-Retreat countdown mode. It’s kind of like going to a conn, the excitement, the planning, the lack of sleep…the big difference is there’s no hotel bill and the only costuming are our pjs.

Common interests? Check. Something to do every second of every day? Check. Food? Check! Fun? Check, check, check!

I’ve been putting together a list of what I’m taking and it just keeps growing. I think a couple of my UFO projects that I’m feeling kind of ‘meh’ about might stay behind.

So far, this is my list (you can several of these on my 2011 UFO post):

To finish:

  • Bear Paws
  • Christmas Quilt
  • HP Swap Quilt*
  • New York Beauty

*I have taken the HP swap blocks to the last two retreats and not touched them. The real problem is that I have no idea how I want to lay them out, so they just get transported back and forth. If I have time before Wednesday, I’m going to import all the photos into EQ7 and play with layouts. Maybe I can get inspired…

To Be Cut/Pieced:

  • POD blocks to be made – pre-sorted with fabric ready to go
  • LotR x-stitch gifted from Shae with mock-ups done in EQ7 so I can decide on the final layout
  • Green swap squares plus purple for 10 Minute Blocks
  • Churn Dash Blocks + shirting (need!) and red or brown fabric (also with EQ7 mock-ups)
  • 5 @ The Hive BOM blocks

Needs to be quilted…might take:

  • Wingless Wyrm
  • Sir Gareth’s Dragon
  • My Kitchen Window
  • Classic Film

Other:

  • Rope & Bag O’ Selvage for basket making
  • Secret Pattern and Fabric for Secret Project
  • Take triangles from exchange…just in case!

EQ7 Mock Up Layouts for LotR X-Stitch and Churn Dash:

I have a whole set Churn Dash blocks that look similar to this one:

These are some of the layouts I’ve thought about. The first one is my favorite, especially if I can find some shirting I like in the quilt shops we visit on the way down to Canyon Lake.

Any opinions or suggestions on the layouts? I’d love to hear them!

UFO Update – Black & Red Afghan

black and red project

Remember this, when I posted about the UFOs and such I’d like to get finished in 2011? Well, the end of February saw me finishing these blocks above into this afghan below!

Black, Red & White Ghan

The black/red squares came from a Twilight Crafts swap in 2009. I made all the white ones to give it a checkered effect and to help the black/red blocks really stand out.

I crocheted all the blocks together with white yarn, then crocheted around with black. Once I changed to white yarn, I crocheted evenly around and then continued with the border, most of which is done in hdc. The finishing row is a reverse sc (aka crab stitch), which adds a really awesome ridged texture.

I really like the finished product and have decided that I will keep this one for myself. Quite a few of my friends participated in this swap and it makes me happy to have a little piece of their craftiness!

Remember the stairs? I will have something to share about those very soon!!

14 days until my bee’s annual quilt retreat!

2011 UFOs and WIPs

With the finish of the TTMT UFO Deadline Challenge, my mind is filled with the projects that I am not only working on, but the ones that have been on the back burner.

Before we start, some definitions:

This year, in addition to my list of UFOs, I’m including my WIPs and some DYI. This is by no means a complete list because I’m very much a Do It Right now kind of  person. That is to say, when I get an idea, I often have to stop everything and do it now!

See my 2010 UFO list and the follow-up post.

Quilting Projects

Brown Bear, sadly no change since 2009

Bear Paw Pass Around

STATUS – UFO

Started as a pass around project with my bee in 2008, I sadly have not touched these blocks for over a year. I did go through the box and make a plan…

Brown Bear, sadly no change since 2009

I plan to use the gold fabric for sashing and was playing with the idea of using brown for the cornerstones. The more I look at the fabric, the more I think I want brick red cornerstones. The brown just sort of disappears against the gold.

1/2 square triangles from exchanges

Half-square triangle exchange blocks

STATUS – UFO-ish

These are the results of two half-square triangle exchanged I participated in last year. I have not yet decided what I’m going to do with them, which is what gives them their “ish” status. They’re just waiting for the right project to crop up!

The InuYasha quilt - I still need t-shirts

InuYasha Quilt

STATUS – Still Collecting

I started collecting shirts for an InuYasha quilt for my daughter last year. The plan is to use the Shoji Screen pattern and place the t-shirt fronts where the large panels would be. Unfortunately, I only have one t-shirt so far, courtesy of ladyoflosttimes. If you have an InuYasha shirt you’d be willing to part with, please let me know and we can work out a trade. InuYasha is her fandom of choice and the least a good fandom mommy can do is make a fandom quilt for her daughter!

10" HP swap blocks that need to be a quilt

Harry Potter/Magical Swap blocks

STATUS – UFO

These quilt blocks are the results of several swaps. Sadly, I’ve had them several years now. I am one step closer to doing something with them now that I realize I  need to break them into sets. The top set are all the 10″ blocks with images on them that say “Harry Potter” to me. The bottom set are more traditional blocks, blocks that are bigger (or smaller!) than 10″ or magical blocks that aren’t as HP-ish. I still love all the blocks, but I definitely need to make two, possibly three, quilts out of these!

Misc Blocks from Swaps

Christmas Quilt needs borders

Christmas Quilt

STATUS – UFO…leaning towards WIP

Started two years ago from a swap I participated in on All About Paper Piecing (a currently defunct ning network), this quilt is getting a piano key border out of Christmas fabric. I’ve already got it sorted out and plan to start cutting in the next month so it’ll be ready to go to quilt retreat in March.

New York Beauty UFO

New York Beauty Quilt

STATUS – UFO

I started this NYB for a class I taught last year. I had lots of models for the class, all in different stages of done-ness. The class was a blast…and then I lost my steam. I will be optimistic and take this one to retreat in March. I have all the pieces cut and just need to get them together. Will I? Who knows!

Beginning applique class lesson UFO

Beginning Hand Appliquéd block

STATUS -UFO…leaning toward WIP

I took a beginning hand appliqué class last year and learned lots! I even almost finished my class project. Can you see there are two leaves that need to have buds added and to be stitched in place? That’s it…all I have left to do to finish this block. I’m putting it in my car so I can work on it in the carpool line. Maybe I’ll actually finish it then!

Photobucket

The Project of Doom

STATUS – WIP

All the blocks for the PoD are designed and I am several weeks ahead of everyone else in piecing them. I plan to have my quilt top finished by the end of March.  This is my pet project for 2011 and my gift to my friends in the Harry Potter crafty fandom. Want to play along and make your own Harry Potter mystery quilt? Click the banner above!

Below – Tackett protects the PoD blocks.

Five at the Hive January Fall 5 at the Hive January Extra

5 @ The Hive Fall Colorway 2011

STATUS – WIP

5 @ The Hive is Honey Bee Quilt Store ‘s Block of the Month. I’m participating for the first time this year. The two blocks above are my January blocks. I’m doing the fall colorway with the extra block. By the end of the year, there will be enough blocks for a completed quilt top. I’m super excited about this one because 1)I’m not designing it and 2) it comes with fabric and 3)I love the blocks and the layout.

Crocheting

Brown Ghan UFO

Variegated and Browns

STATUS – UFO

I completely forgot about this until I cleaned out my stash. I will get back to working on it after I finish the next project on the list. This will probably be a blanket for The Linus Connection.

black and red project

Black/Red Knit or Crochet Swap

STATUS – WIP

After doing absolutely nothing with these fabulous black and red knit and crochet blocks from a Twilight Crafts swap in 2009, I have created enough white blocks to make a chess/checkerboard out of the set. The next step is to crochet them all together and then add a red, white and black border.

Crafts

A bowl I started

Rope Bowl – “It’s A Wrap” style

STATUS – UFO

This is the only unfinished craft project I found, and it can really be classified as a sewing project…so, go figure. This was the bowl I started when I taught the It’s A Wrap class last fall. I brought it home from class and promptly forgot all about it. I would like to get back to it and finish it up because the technique is just so darn fun!

DIY

Stairs - Before

Staircase makeover

STATUS – WIP

Just last week, I pulled the carpet off of our stairs. It had horrible, gross carpet that the builders installed 20 years ago. I’ve steamed cleaned them so many times, the thought of doing it again made me feel like weeping. The stairs are now de-carpeted, de-carpet-tacked, scrubbed and primed. The next step is a faux finish to turn the stairwell and stairs into a stone passageway. Yeah, you heard that, I actually said it out loud!

Projects In Mind

I have about a million and one other projects that I’d like to tackle this year. These are some ideas that have crossed my mind that are on the high end of happening.

  • A Twi-Wizard She-Shirt in Ravenclaw colors with “ofenjen” on the back. Because I can. And for DH, part 2.
  • A new Monk’s Bag 2.0
  • A granny ripple afghan for Linus. Someone made several in December and they were really neat. I want to make one.
  • A multitude of fun layout patterns for the Sewhooked Shop, like Classic Film, intended specifically for 5″ (finished) blocks.
  • A werewolf wall hanging or cushion for my daughter. Not found in all my stuff today were the blocks designed by Cat Magraith that I started making for Miss E last year (definite UFO status). Hopefully they’ll turn up before March!
  • Miscellaneous gifts for people I love. I do have some things in mind, but hey, spoilers!
What are you working on this year? Do you have any UFOs or WIPs? Blog about them and leave me a link so I can see what you’re up to or tell me in comments!
