Garden Party Blog Hop – Day 28: It’s My Birthday!

Paper Pieced Pattern-A-Day Garden Party Blog Hop

Welcome to Day 28 of Sewhooked’s Paper Pieced Pattern-A-Day Garden Party Blog Hop!

Hey, ho, it’s my birthday!

This is a post full of PARTY and PRESENTS for both you and me, so make sure you read all the way to the end!

What to get the girl that has everything.

It’s been quite a birthday month for me, what with the amazing-ness of the Garden Party, being part of the Ties That Bind Blog Tour (giveaways and coupons, oh my!) and Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks and the 100 Blocks Blog Tour both on the way!

TODAY, my original quilt The Project of Doom, is on display at the Pflugerville Area Quilt Show hosted by Hennig House Quilts! If you are in the Austin area, please stop by for this super fun outdoor, non-juried show!

Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Vol 5 will be available for sale on May 8. Please support your local quilt shops and go pick up a copy! You can find me on pages 22 and 31!

If you will be in the Austin area on May 12, please stop by Honey Bee Quilt Store to see me! More information on that right here.

And now…what you came for…Garden Party!

My block, Perennial Pleasures, is a reminder to myself to take a few minutes to sit and do nothing, something a dear friend of mine has reminded me on occasion that it is OK to do! We’ve broken out the wine, the table is decorated and the sky is lovely and blue, how relaxing!

For those non-wine lovers out there, I’ve included alternate pattern pieces for a sweet butterfly.

10″ paper pieced, all pieces include seam allowance

Directions for both layouts (wine and butterfly) are included in the free pattern.

Photobucket In November of 2012, I will celebrate my tenth year as a Linus Connection volunteer! I have spent almost all of those years at the Linus webmistress and am now on my second go as a Board Member.

I’m currently in charge of blanket packing and distribution during our monthly meetings, which simply means I make sure each facility gets what they need from the donated blankets we receive. I also write all the blog posts for our group, as well as take care of our Facebook and Twitter pages.

You will hear me talk about “Linus” a lot. When I do, I’m always referring to The Linus Connection of Central Texas, a small non-profit based right here in Austin.

My personal goal is 2 blankets a month, or 24 blankets per year.

In 2012, I will continue to collect Stars for Linus (see above!). In 2011, we donated 3 Stars for Linus quilts to The Linus Connection. This year, let’s try to make it 4!

Each quilt block needs to be 12″ (12 1/2″ unfinished) and made in bright colors with a light background.

You can use my free pattern or any star pattern of your choice, including Wonky Stars!

You can find my mailing address on the Stars for Linus pattern. For best results, print without scaling. If your pattern scales down, simply make the borders a little bigger and then square up to 12 1/2″!

We Are The Face of Quilting The Faces of Quilting come in all shapes, sizes, ages and skin tones.

Share your story of quilting on your own blog and post your photo in our flickr group!

Well, I guess that about sums it up! This week I’m planning a look back at 2011 as well as my 12 for 2012 post. I hope you are having a very happy new year!

Don’t forget, now through midnight, get 50% off your total Sewhooked Shop instant download purchase! Use coupon code STITCHEDJAN1 for half-off your entire PDF order!

Happy crafting!

In The 80s

Jennifer, 1991

My high school reunion is on Saturday. I get to see a friend I really want to see for the first time in several years, and in the context of people we went to high school with.

1980s Girl
Me, 1987-88ish, freshman in high school. Rob Lowe and Princess Reebocks ftw!

I still have the unicorn blanket…

I am very, very excited to see my friend, but about the rest of the night, my emotions have been fluctuating between Totally Awesome and Gag Me With A Spoon. We graduated in 1991, which makes this twenty years. 20.

1980s Glossary

So, today, a tribute to the 1980s, which was the decade in which I was a teenager.

This post is dedicated to my daughter, Elena. It’s Homecoming on Friday and this is Spirit Week at her school. Today is 80s day. Now I know how my parents felt when we had 60s day…

Elena on 80s Day

This is Elena, wearing the jacket that I embellished my freshman year. I helped her roll up her jeans. She did the rest!

I wish I could find a photo of myself wearing this jacket, but alas, I do not have one.

Elena on 80s Day
The jacket from the back. Yeah, that’s how I rolled. Even back then. I love seeing my daughter in my jacket from high school!

And now, for another musical interlude.

While looking for the jacket Elena’s wearing today, I remembered a vest that I’ve kept that has my button collection from middle and high school on it. These are some of my favorites. In self-defense, I’d like to comment that I was an honors student. 😉

1980s buttons
Did I ever mention that George Michael’s Faith tour was my first concert?  And oh, Jon Bon Jovi, how I loved your hair.

Time Capsule
Some of my stickers from high school,  found when my parents moved out of our childhood home.

So, high school reunions. Did you, would you, could you go to yours?

A Touch Of Fall Album Theme

Something To Look At

Squirrels in my backyard

A little something to look at while you wait for my tardy TTMT.

These little guys have been hanging out in our backyard all summer, hiding from the heat and the drought.  They especially enjoy napping at the base of the live oak, where they’ve dug a little hole. They also play in the sprinkler when it’s on, and drink from the water hose when it’s off.

It’s been a long, hot summer.
