31 Days of Halloween – Give Me Candy!

Welcome back for another 31 Days of Halloween post!

Today I’m excited to share a brand new and absolutely free Halloween stencil! This the first stencil I’ve shared in an age and I do hope you enjoy it!

Designed by me entirely in Inkscape, Give Me Candy represents a lifelong love, nay, adoration, of candy corn! Yum!

New to stenciling? Here’s a video tutorial I created waaay back in May of 2008. It’s hard to believe, but it pre-dates even Talk to Me Tuesday!

For this project you’ll need: (affiliate links are marked *)

  • The stencil, printed on the matte side of freezer paper (for easy printing, I cut a sheet to letter size then tape the top side to a piece of regular printer paper)
  • You can print or download the Give Me Candy Stencil.
  • X-acto Knife or other stencil cutting tool
  • cutting board or other safe cutting surface
  • Fabric paint. For this project, I used Tulip Soft Mandarin Orange, Sunshine Yellow and Velveteen White.
  • 1″ sponge brush
  • iron
  • cardboard or paper for inside the shirt/back of fabric
  • You’ll need fabric or a t-shirt. Most instructions say to pre-wash, but I won’t lie, I rarely do and I’ve never had any issues with the paint sticking or not lasting.

I used Tulip Soft Fabric Paint for this project.

 

 

Here’s the stencil all cut out and ironed on to my fabric. I like to use a pressing cloth after I iron the pointy bits are in place to ensure everything is nice and stuck.

Freezer paper creates a temporary bond, and it will peel off, so check your edges before painting.

I wanted a candy corn effect on the letters, so I blended my colors, starting with white and working my way down. When all the colors were in place, I went back and blended a little between the edges.

The stencil is designed so that the candy corn pieces can be entirely separate if you wish. If you’d prefer to blend yours, simply cut away the dividing bits before ironing the stencil on to your fabric (I didn’t do that, and had to go back with a tiny paint brush, no fun!).

It looks complicated, but it’s so, so simple! Just take your time and don’t be too fussed if the edges aren’t perfect.

 

And, done!

I stenciled this on a piece of Moda Marbles and now I’m thinking my Jack cushion might need a companion…

If you’re feeling ambitious, try it with embroidery or even applique!

Sometimes, I have more ideas than I have time to share. While updating the Crafts page here on Sewhooked, I came across a couple of files I’d never uploaded. Mainly because they were ideas I had started working on and never quite finished up.

Thank goodness for friends!

Aalia noticed the Greek Geek stencil did not have a photo. Poor stencil, all alone at the bottom of the section with no photo of it’s own! She very graciously shared the photo of the tee she made with the same stencil so you could all see it in it’s geektastic glory.

Who doesn’t love a free stencil?

stencil: Revisiting The Cullen Crest

Once upon a time, I made myself a Cullen Crest stenciled tee.  I posted it here and started getting requests to share the stencil.

So I did, and then in November of last year, I posted about it here on the sewhooked blog.   I pulled the stencil together for myself before there was anything commercially available with the crest on it, back when all fans had was a tiny glimpse from an MTV teaser.

Fast forward to today and The Cullen Crest Stenciled Tee is one of my most visited posts, with a downright ridiculous number of visits each month.    The Cullen Crest in general is huge in handmade. If you don’t believe me, search it on etsy or on flickr.  Woah.

I have see my version of the Cullen Crest everywhere since I first posted it and I thought it’d be fun to show a few of the ways it’s turned up. If you look closely, you can certainly tell the difference from the official crest (shown below) and the image that I created (shown above), so you’ll always know which images, no matter how they are presented, came from the stencil that I designed.

I took a lot of liberties with the official image to make it into a stencil from the tiny image shown above.   Those changes included greatly simplifying the image and adding the “Cullen” text to the top.

Some of the things I’ve seen the stencil on were for sale, and while I don’t condone the taking another crafter’s stencil, pattern or idea that is free for everyone to use and then making something to sell (in case you didn’t know, that’s a crafty taboo!), I don’t deny the ingenuity of the different uses the stencil has been put to.

To everyone that has used it on something for yourself, a friend, a swap, a gift or any other way that was just for fun and not for profit, A HUGE THANK YOU.  That’s why I share my stencils, patterns, crafts and ideas, to spread the crafty love.    Thank you, too, to Summit and whoever the awesome artist was that came up with the original crest!
