On Saturday, we said goodbye to our furry boy, and the eldest of our kitties, Merlin.
I won’t go into details here, only know that he suffers no more.
Almost exactly a year after we said goodbye to our other old furry boy, Tackett (the TTMT kitty), we let our Merlin go.
We miss him so much already.
Tackett & Merlin, 2010, both of them fat & happy.
We adopted Merlin in March 2001, when he was 3 years old. We found him at the Austin Humane Society, where he had been for quite sometime. He was a big boy, 13 pounds when he was skin & bones, and no one wanted him because he was a black cat.
They don’t know what they were missing. He had the sweetest temperament, just low key and loveable. He and Tackett were companions and buddies for over a decade.
He was such a special part of our lives that in October 2002 my daughter decided that there would be nothing better to be for Halloween! It’s hard to see in this photo, but her tag says “Merlin” and she’s sporting a long black tail. 🙂
We are very lucky to still have our two beautiful girls, the new: Rose (left) and Marie (right). Marie was the baby when we still had our Kitty Herd. The girls aren’t quite getting along yet, but we’re working on it and hope that they will have a long, happy life together.
To those of you that follow me elsewhere online and sent your condolences over the weekend, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I’m so sorry for your loss… he was a beautiful boy…and very lucky to have such understanding and open minded “parents”.
I am so sorry for the loss of Merlin. It is so hard when a member of your family passes away. Love and hugs to you and your family during this difficult time.
so sorry for you loss. these pets are a part of our family and my prayers are with you all
Your Rose looks just like my Charlie! I know you will miss your boys as I would miss my two girls and Charlie! Joette
My husband thought that he hated cats, until we got one, then two. Our oldest is black like your cat and his name is Pablo (for SF Giant, Pablo Sandoval) and our white kitten is Posey for SF Giant Buster Posey. We picked the name Posey (rather than Buster) because the kitty is a girl. The cats, ironically, love my husband more than they do me and follow him everywhere. Cats are so special and so intelligent. We have a dog that we love dearly too, but cats interact and do such amazing things. I feel your pain…..losing a faithful pet hurts to the core.
Jennifer, My condolences to you and your family. It is painful to lose a pet and from your description and photos, Merlin was a special boy. Hugs.
Merlin and Tackett are together again in heaven laying on a beautiful quilt. They are looking down on the girls fighting, well not quite getting along and they are laughing their tails off thinking, we thought girls just want to have fun?? You and your family are special people to take in precious fur babies that o ine rlse wanted and provided them love, shelter, good nourishment and wonderful places to lay their heads and many places to play hide and seek. How you must miss them but oh how you loved them and how they loved their family… Thanks for sharing.

So sorry for you loss. We are in waiting right now with our beloved Henry cat. He has had diabetes for four years. We have given him injections twice a day and he has been living a good life. Recently he has taken a terrible turn for the worse. The vet says it is nothing to do with his diabetes. He is just old. He doesn’t seem to be in pain so we hope he will pass at home. If we have to make the “other” decision we will but right now he is eating, drinking, and doing everything fine. He just walks very very slow and lays around much more than ever. My husband didn’t think he liked cats either until our first one. Now we have three : ) They are such a joy and they like to help me quilt all the time. Even now Henry still comes into my sewing room to lay in the room with me 🙂 Hugs to you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss! It is so hard to say goodbye to our furry friends, and when they are suffering it is often the last, best gift we can give them. You will be in my thoughts.
So sorry to hear of Merlin’s passing. Those furbabies are such special people in our lives. He was blessed to have you rescue him and give him such a loving home.
Gentle hugs from BillieBee in (Elgin) Texas
We got our black cat, Sammy, from the SPCA and he is the very best kitty. He is part of our family and we would miss him terribly, if something happened to him. Please accept my condolences for the loss of your two kitties.
I’m so sorry to hear about your baby. 😦 Yes, black cats are still discriminated against in this day and age and it’s downright ridiculous. Two of my 5 babies are black and although one has a naughty streak a mile wide, they are both so very sweet and affectionate and have sensitive, loving dispositions. I will always have a black cat! Hugs and healing to you and your family for your loss.
Oh, no! So sorry for your loss.
Loving thoughts are sent to you & family.
So sorry about your kitty. We lost our dog back in January, after 13+ years. It’s tough. Black cats have always been my favorites.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. My son has two black cats and they are wonderful. One is very laid back and the other one I think has ADD. I, too, had to have a 17 year old cat put down about a month ago. It’s so sad. The house isn’t the same without her. I still have one though which fills the void. Please accept my sincere condolences. Cecile
