Rainbow Cascade – Nudge for Set 3

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Welcome back to the Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along!

Rainbow Cascade is the single 10″ paper pieced block you see above, made in a literal rainbow of colors, all put together to create one stunning quilt!

The free pattern includes complete paper pieced patterns in shaded & unshaded versions, 1″ scale for proper printing, suggested cutting instructions to make piecing (and chain piecing!) easier, Coloring Pages for all quilt sizes, fabric amounts needed, and printing permission in case you’d like to print at a copy shop.

Need to learn to paper piece? I can help with that!

On the second and fourth Mondays of each month through April, I’ll be sharing a nudge and letting you know which blocks to make next.

To make this as easy as possible, and to not tie you down to a single quilt along (because we all know that never works!),  you will never need to make more than four blocks in a two-week period.

Rainbow Cascade – Nudge 2

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Welcome back to the Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along!

We’ve passed the two-week mark and it’s time for our next prompt.

But first, some housekeeping:

After numerous requests, I’ve decided to make some small updates to the Rainbow Cascade instructions in order for it to be in true ROYGBIV order.

This change will only affect you if you’re making a Rainbow Cascade in the 30″ x 40″ OR 40″ x 50″. For these two sizes, the amount of Orange and Yellow blocks needed will be reversed. 3 Yellow & 2 Orange for both quilt sizes.

If you’re making ANY other quilt size, the ONLY change will be the block order when piecing the quilt top, not the number of blocks you make.

If you finished your first set of blocks, alternative instructions will be noted in the chart below in parenthesis. If you are at all confused, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

I am truly sorry for the change. I had planned to leave the order red>yellow>orange, but it was causing confusion, and I didn’t want that at all.

Pattern pages updated:

  • Blocks Needed Per Quilt Based On Size (pg 7)
  • Block Schedule for Quilting Along (pg 8)
  • Block Color Order Per Quilt Size (pg 9)

Rainbow Cascade – Fabric Amounts

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Hello, friends!

Next week, we’ll begin our Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along!

Rainbow Cascade QAL coming to sewhooked.com September 2017!

Rainbow Cascade is the single paper pieced block you see above, made in a rainbow of colors, all put together to create one stunning quilt!

On the second and fourth Mondays of each month starting next week through April, I’ll be sharing a nudge and letting you know which blocks to make next.

ALL instructions, including fabric amounts below, will be included in the FREE original pattern to be released next Monday.

Need to learn to paper piece? I can help with that!

Fabric amounts are included for the following quilt sizes:

  • 30” x 40”
  • 40” x 50”
  • 50” x 60”
  • 60” x 70”
  • 70” x 80”

To make this as easy as possible, and to not tie you down to a single quilt along (because we all know that never works!),  you will never need to make more than four blocks in a two week period. ♥

FABRIC NEEDED

Amounts are generous estimates, but paper piecing styles can differ.

I’ll be using this pattern as a stash buster and will be using a variety of different fabrics from my stash. Feel free to do the same!

PPV 2017 – Block 12 & Hall🎃ween Reveal!

2017 quilt along.jpg

Welcome to the finale of our Paper Piecing Vintage Quilt Along (#PPV2017)!

Before we get to today’s block and the reveal of my Halloween PPV, I’d like to say a very earnest THANK YOU to each and every person who has made a Paper Piecing Vintage quilt. I’ve seen some wonderful photos in the Facebook Group, on Craftsy, in various Talk to Me Tuesday Videos, on Instagram, & Flickr.

BIG thanks to my fabulous pattern tester and dear friend Amber Lowery. She made another PPV even though she had tested the entire pattern in 2014. How’s that for dedication?! Amber is a bona fide rock star!

I designed PPV in late 2013 after my daughter left for her freshman year of college. I’ve long loved vintage-style quilts, many of which are hand pieced. While I love to hand embroider and dabble in hand quilting from time to time, hand piecing is definitely not my thing. I’d much rather paper piece any day of the week. Once I started creating paper pieced patterns inspired by vintage blocks, I couldn’t stop and it followed naturally that I share with the awesome online quilting community.

Thank you, dear friends, for joining me for this round of Paper Piecing Vintage. 🙂

The following is the December 2014 block made for my 1930’s vintage fabric-inspired version of this quilt (above).

Block 12 (December 2014) is Spinning Puzzle. You can find it beginning on page 57 in Paper Piecing Vintage, or you can purchase JUST this block pattern here.

All patterns for PPV are 6″ & 12″ (w/o seam allowance). The size you make is up to you.

My 2017 PPV Halloween Quilt Block

Block 12 - Spinning Puzzle

My final Halloween PPV block is, I think, my favorite. I adore the lime green background with the happy little ghosts. I did a little bit of fussy cutting to get the secondary fabric moving in the right direction. It’s worth it for the “spin.”

for-me

As you may remember, this was my original plan for my Halloween version of the PPV. I added cornerstones to the inside sections. These are not in the original design but are easy to achieve by making the long horizontal sashing the same length as the short vertical sashing. The black cornerstones are the squares in the same width as the sashing.

PPV 2017 before quilting
Here it is! My lovely, yummy, Halloween-y Paper Piecing Vintage top!
I loved every minute of working on this project. I loved your enthusiasm for your own fabrics and blocks. I loved pulling out my stockpile of cute Halloween fabric. I loved cutting and fussy cutting. I loved piecing. It was a genuine joy to work on and I’m thrilled to have the top ready to quilt.
I think the thing I love most about this project is that unless you look closely at the fabrics, it just look slike a fun, colorful quilt. The “Halloween” of it is subtle, which is exactly what I was going for.
PPV Cornerstones
My cornerstones are the August bonus block in the complete PPV pattern. Even here, I managed to use a few scraps of Halloween fabric!
The piano keys are all made from leftovers from my blocks. There’s a little bit of everything in there and I used almost every scrap of my fun Halloween fabric and black & white prints!

I had EVERY intention of having my quilt finished for this post, but I decided that I really, really wanted spiderwebs in the quilting.

Spiderwebs are something I had never done before and I decided at the last minute that I didn’t just need to, but that I SHOULD practice before attempting them on my PPV. Sometimes it’s hard to wait to work on the Real Deal, but I really do what this quilt to be special and as well done as I can make it.

It just so happens that I had a small Harry Potter Bookcase/Project of Doom quilt top pieced from donated blocks made by members of the PoD Facebook group that was ready to quilt.

I spent most of my weekend practicing. My spiderwebs are inspired by this tutorial by Lori Kennedy.  I used glow-in-the-dark thread gifted to me by my BFF and boy does it GLOW! One of the upsides to using the same thread I’m planning to use for my PPV is that I found that I needed to slow waaaay down in order to keep the glow-in-the-dark thread from breaking. I’m a bit of a speed demon when I sew, and that isn’t always the best choice for the thread.

As of right now, my PPV is on my Gracie King frame and ready to quilt! When it’s quilted & bound, I’ll share a finished photo here for you all, and of course, I will talk about it on on Talk to Me Tuesday.

If you’d like to follow my daily quilting adventures (and my cats, let’s be honest here!), be sure to follow me on Instagram.

Have you shared your PPV signature block? Find this block on page 21 of Paper Piecing Vintage. If you’re only making a few blocks, you can also find the Signature Block Pattern right here.

Now that PPV has concluded, you are cordially invited to join me for the next Sewhooked Quilt Along and my very first entirely free Sewhooked QAL brought to you thanks to our Patreon Patrons!

Rainbow Cascade, is a FREE Quilt Along for a brand new quilt pattern designed by yours truly to take place September 2017 – April 2018!

Rainbow Cascade QAL coming to sewhooked.com September 2017!

Rainbow Cascade is unlike any quilt I’ve designed or any quilt along I’ve hosted. It’s a single pattern quilt that is all about COLOR!

The quilt along will include 5 quilt sizes so you can make your version as big or small as you like. We’ll be piecing our blocks in a cascade so you can watch your own quilt grow from the corner out.

I will keep the Second & Fourth Monday schedule we’ve had for PPV, so even if you’re making the biggest quilt (70″ x 80″), you will never need to piece more than 4 blocks in a two week period.

I myself will be using Rainbow Cascade as a stash busting project. I’ll release fabric amounts in August so you can pull (or purchase!) fabric for your own version of Rainbow Cascade!

I very much hope you’ll play along for fun and rainbow-themed piecing!

As during PPV, you will find Quilty Fun & Prizes in the Sewhooked Facebook Group.

patreonRainbow Cascade, will be entirely free thanks to Patreon Patrons! Become a Sewhooked Patron to help support more free patterns & events!

I’ll see you tomorrow for Talk to Me Tuesday!

Happy sewing!
