Free Pattern Friday: String Pieced Picnic

Hello, dear friends!

It’s been a long while since our last Free Pattern Friday and I am delighted to have something new to share!

hugs title

My last non-fandom freebie was Virtual Hugs back in March 2020. I’m sure no explanation is needed. You can find it, and many more free patterns here.

String Pieced Picnic is based on an old photo I discovered in January while digitizing my photo collection. The quilt shown was made by one of my great-grandmothers. My version is not an identical replica but is close enough that I know, and now, you know!

Say hello to String Pieced Picnic, named by YouTube viewer Julie T (thank you, Julie!)

My quilt top is complete, but I won’t be able to quilt it just yet as I’m waiting to be cleared for normal activity after foot surgery back in December.

My quilt back is also pieced and ready to go. I plundered my collection of whites + brights, including some fun fat quarters from trips and gifts from friends to make a wild and crazy patchwork back! I hope to have this on my frame very soon!

Now, I’m sharing String Pieced Picnic for free so you have the chance to make your own heirloom-inspired picnic quilt! The design is very versatile and can be string pieced with or without foundation or it can be foundation paper pieced for a more precise design. Instructions for both are included.

As shown, the quilt is 83” x 83” but the size can easily be increased or decreased as desired. I’d love to see what size you make!

I hope you enjoy String Pieced Picnic. If you make it, feel free to share! You can find me at sewhooked.com and on Instagram & YouTube as @sewhookedjen. Looking for community support or just want to share your work in progress? Join the Sewhooked Facebook group!

A note about previously for sale patterns: I’ve recently had a lot of requests for patterns formerly in my pattern shop. I retired from selling quilt patterns on December 31, 2019. If you would still like one of my retired patterns, I will offer it in return for a small donation to a food bank, non-profit, or other similar charity in your area. Volunteering your time, of course, counts! Email your receipt to me or send a photo of yourself donating or volunteering (for me only, I won’t publish or) and I’ll gladly send the pattern. One pattern per donation.

Trees for Australia🌳🌳🌳

trees for wollongong by janina

The lovely Janina made these 12″ paper pieced trees using two of my free patterns to send to Australia for the quilt block collection by Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild. The blocks will be used to make quilts for families affected by the bushfires in New South Wales.

Tree blocks will also be collected at QuiltCon here in Austin later this week to send to the Wollongong MQG. You can read more about that here.

Janina used my Tree at Sunset & Whomping Willow patterns. Both were enlarged from 5″ to 12″. I have a handy dandy tutorial for enlarging patterns here.

Thank you for sharing your lovely blocks, Janina! 🌳💜🌳💜🌳

Happy Love Day! Heart Pattern Roundup

Happy Love Day to all of my friends out there!

May 2005

Donated to The Linus Connection, May 2005

I have always loved hearts in crafts in general, but especially in quilts. One of the early quilts that I made for donation to The Linus Connection was made of simple pieced hearts and I remember just how EXCITED I was when each heart made its appearance!

In honor of love and friendship, I am sharing a round-up of my free heart patterns. I’ve even added a couple of patterns that were previously retired. They are now back to share the love!

I hope you enjoy these and I hope you have some time to appreciate yourself, hug someone you love, and maybe get a little sewing in today. Each of these patterns is a  virtual hug from me to you.♥

Click on any image to print or save the free pattern with Google Drive.

All patterns are paper pieced. Find out more about Paper Piecing here.

My Favorite Things – Etsy Update!

my-favorite-things-quilt-2016

Hello, friends!

In my continued efforts to include all of my for sale PDF patterns to download in my Etsy Shop, I have now added the individual block patterns from My Favorite Things!

My Favorite Things was my 2016 block of the month featuring, as you may remember, many of my favorite things. From sewing and yarn to crayons, and paint, I love all things crafty!

I talked about My Favorite Things in this 2016 Talk to Me Tuesday.

My finished quilt (above) was quilted by Sarah’s Sewing Studio.

Individual blocks with direct links are listed below. Those are just $2.95 each. If you want the entire quilt worth of patterns and instructions, you can get that here for $9.95. All patterns are both 6″ and 12″ to allow you to choose what size quilt (or block!) you’d like to make.

Finally, a big, huge thank you for your patience as I go through the process of updating and adding my patterns to Etsy. I had almost three hundred patterns available through Craftsy, most of them individual blocks patterns like these. I’m working a little at a time to remove broken links from all of my existing patterns and adding my new 1″ scale to all patterns before adding them to Etsy.

If there is something you personally are looking for and haven’t been able to find it, please let me know and I’ll add it straight away.

You can find all my free patterns right here on Sewhooked.

L’amour sous la Tour Eiffel, updated

eiffel title

Hello, dear friends!

I’m happy to share that I’ve updated one of my most popular patterns, L’amour sous la Tour Eiffel! I’ve had a number of requests to add fabric amounts and to color this pattern. For your sewing convenience, both of those things are now done! I have also tweaked the pattern to make it a bit more symmetrical.

Originally inspired by my daughter’s international travels, L’amour sous la Tour Eiffel is available on Etsy for $2.95.

Have you already purchased this pattern? Download the update for free right from Etsy! If you bought this pattern on Craftsy, email your receipt (or a screencap of it in your Craftsy library) and I will happily send this updated version right to your inbox! As a reminder, my patterns are no longer be available on Craftsy. Here’s why.

eiffel quilt

One keen quilter asked for a sample rainbow quilt inspired by L’amour sous la Tour Eiffel! How fun is that? You could go much bigger if you desired (see link below!). This simple version includes multiple colors of the Eiffel Tower with 2″ sashing and cornerstones.

Are there other patterns you’d like to see updated or would like to see a quilt mock-up for? Let me know!

How to Enlarge & Reduce Patterns using Adobe Reader

FYI – The Sewhooked Suggestion Box is temporarily closed as I work my way through my inventory of patterns to update links and remove Craftsy badges.

A quick reminder: my Holiday and Winter themed patterns are on sale through December 31. You can find those in my Etsy Pattern shopWant some holiday freebies? I have those, too!

Talk to you again soon!

Surprise! New pattern – Signs Signs Signs

Surprise!

Guess who has been working on a new pattern in between all the other craziness?!

You guessed it!

Some time ago, Robin B. made an amazing suggestion that I have had in the back of my mind ever since – a multi-directional signpost.

With all the travel I’ve been doing this year, I absolutely could not resist designing this one. I did a little research and a little sketching. I worked up a pattern and sent it off to my pattern testers.

It is now tested and ready to share!

This awesome, versatile pattern is perfect to express your wanderlust or to point to where your loved ones are, or maybe share your favorite fandom locations. Think fabric with existing text, hand or machine embroidery, stenciling, fabric markers, the list goes on!

Need more signs? Duplicate and rotate the center block! Add to larger projects or make as is for a fun wall hanging.

Includes full-color instructions with fabric amounts, suggestions, and paper pieced pattern.

And here is Amber’s fantastic tested version! She has big plans for this and I can’t wait to share what she does!

If  you try your hand at this pattern, I’d love to see what you do with it over in the Sewhooked Facebook Group! Not on Facebook? Tag me on Instagram (@sewhookedjen) or Twitter (@sewhooked)!

Thank you for stopping by and have a fantastic weekend! 😀

See you soon!
