Hi Annie, I have it all sorted out now. Would you believe it was the difference between S and s? I’ve checked every letter now and all patterns are loading just fine! I hope you share a photo of what you’re working on when you’re done!
Thanks for letting me know about the error. I’d much rather have it corrected than let it linger. π
I’m getting ready to start The Project of Doom quilt with my best friend. I’m excited! (And nervous, but mostly excited!) Thanks so much for sharing this awesome project!
You are so welcome! My own PoD is being quilted right now…I’m so excited that it will be a complete quilt soon! Have fun stitching with your best friend!
I have searched & searched for directions/guidance on how to construct a bookcase with more shape than a basic box. I found the claw feet, but I was hoping to find help with a cornice at the top of the bookcase in order to put a crest there. Plus, help with measurements. More importantly, I REALLY want to create a stone castle wall border to widen my quilt. Can you direct me to where this kind of help is?
Absolutely! We have a HUGE Facebook group just for The Project of Doom. Everyone there is happy to share and they are incredibly helpful. They are often able to answer questions before I can, too.
Annie, I also run a fandom website called Fandom In Stitches. I added Smurfs to our request list and I’ll give a shout out to our designers to see if anyone might be working on something like that. You can find the request list here:
It looked like you were having so much fun with the PODproject that I have now started out. Are you still interested in a credit-block? I am not able to find the paperpiecing pattern for it, it keeps telling me it’s redirecting, but nothing happens. And I would like to show just a litte of the gratitude I feel about the patterns, I am truly enjoying myself. Thank you!
Hi, and welcome! I had a great time with the PoD and I’m always happy to hear when new quilters are joining in! I would love to have your extra credit block. I’m collecting through Dec. 1.
I’ve sorted out the links, but to make it easier, you can find it here:
Extra Credit Block – Paper Pieced or Traditionally Pieced
Thank you for your help, but I simply cant get the links to work. They show “wordpress.com” for a short while and then jump back. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I’m so sorry that it keeps not working for you. I’m trying it from my end with no troubles. If you’ll email me – sewhooked@gmail.com, and let me know if you prefer the paper pieced version or the rotary cut version, I’ll send you the instructions.
Harry Potter fabric has not been available for sale since 2003, when it went out of print. Your best bet is to check on ebay or etsy. You can sometimes find it there.
This is probably going to sound like an insane question…but I love to sew by hand. Is there any way to do this via hand sewing instead of using a machine? Do you know of anyone who has done this? Thank you so much for your help and videos! I recently subscribed to your Youtube link. I love your videos!!!
Believe it or not, it’s completely doable! I knew a student that did all her paper piecing by hand so she could stitch while she was in class. All of her blocks looked great, as did her finished projects, so I’m sure you can do it.
Jen, may I ask you a question please? I was trying to sew the monster book, I sewed the pieces, but they are way too bulky! How did you get your monster book looking so flat where as mine looks pregnant lol…help please?
Wonderful. Thank you Jennifer for the Harry Potter Project of Doom. I just finished it. I was consumed with making these blocks over the past several months. How generous of you to share this fantastic project.
Hi Jennifer!
My name is Hannah. I am 14 and am starting to make this quilt with my mom, as a mother-daughter project. We have 2 *gasp* sewing machines, so we can work at the same time, or during any free time we have. If any of the women out there are reading this, and you have a child my age, try to make a quilt with your child; it can really bring you and your child together!!! Thanks for putting this out there Jen; you are amazing!!!!
Hi, Jennifer. I just started making quilts, and am a HUGE HP fan and discovered all your wonderful quilt pieces. I was most excited about the alphabet designs, so I could add my name in HP letters to a bag I have, but I can’t seem to find the designs ANYWHERE! Every link I click on for them takes me to a link that is just a blank page. Have they been removed for some reason? Is there some link to them I am missing? Thanks for your help.
P. S. I actually live right down the street from the Honey Bee quilt shop, and have shopped there from time to time, I might have to check out your classes sometime. =D
I’ve got that link working again now, so it’ll be easy peasy from now on. There are quite a lot more patterns on that HP page than I have listed here. π
I’m a terrible person to ask, because I’ve made most of them, lol! I have two quilts and have made a ton of bags and wall hangings. There’s always room for more Potter!
They vary in size. The Project of Doom blocks are 10″ and most of the other blocks are 5″. Generally, it will say in the pattern itself or in the file name.
Went to a quilt show today. Two of your Harry Potter (pattern) quilts were in the show. My friend told be where to find you cause I am a huge HP fan. Must sew. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent.
That’s great to hear! Did you happen to see who made the quilts? I’m always curious when other quilters are showing their quilts made from my patterns. π
Thank you soooo much for creating the HP blocks. My nephew, a college freshman, is a tremendous HP fan. This year for Christmas, he requested a sleep mask because there is a streetlight outside his dorm window and I thought this was a great opportunity to make him a gift. Wanting to go a step farther, I remembered seeing Harry’s glasses on one of your blocks so I downloaded the pattern and adapted the sleep mask pattern to fit around it. LOL Of course, that made me think that pillowcases would be a great complimentary gift so I also downloaded Harry’s crest and put that on one of the pillowcases. I would love to post a photo of how they turned out (and I am really pleased), but I can’t figure out how to post a photo here. Next week (after Christmas), I’ll post a photo on my Facebook page. Please drop by and look. Thanks to you, my nephew is going to think I’m brilliant! LOL
Just found this site while searching for ideas on how to make a Harry Potter quilt for my grandson. Wow. Just love what I found. The quilt of Doom now has the 1st row nearly finished. Thanks for making this pattern available. Sally in Washington.
Thank you so much, it was a true pleasure to create and even more fun to share with other quilters and Harry Potter fans!
The blocks for the Project of Doom are entirely paper pieced, so there are no rotary instructions for those. However, the sashing between the “shelves” and the outside borders are rotary cut. I hope that answers your questions!
So glad I found you and the HP quilt!! I have stayed away from paper piecing so far but now I must try it!! The quilt will be for myself as I am the fan at 65 yrs Young(when it comes to HP stuff!! Thank you for sharing these patterns with the rest of the quilting world just wish I had found you and your group earlier!! Better late than never right? RIGHT!!
You’re never too old to love Harry Potter! I started reading it to my kiddos when they were little and I ended up being the biggest fan! It is my pleasure to share and I hope you get as much joy out of making the blocks as I did creating them! π
You’re more than welcome to change anything you like to make it your own! I’ve seen all kinds of fun variations now, all of them fun and creative!
Depending on the quilt show, you might need written permission. I think it really varies by the show. I’ve had a couple of quilters that needed that, but most don’t seem to. Personally, all I ask is for credit when you share your quilt description. My name and sewhooked.com. is plenty. π
Thanks so much for your quick answer to make questions and most definitely I will give you credit whenever I make it …whether or not I even put it in a show. Also have another question ..How did you learn to make your own paper piecing blocks??
I emailed with you several years back when I started teaching a Harry Potter course to K-2 because your site was so helpful. I am back in the game but can’t find the area on your site that had the wonderful invitation and other party ideas. Thanks, Amy
I am still working on this project…just printed the last three blocks…and I am so glad you have kept the blocks available after all this time.
Thanks so much Jen

I have been looking and looking for a paper pieced pattern to make a quilt square of a man’s necktie. All I can find are bowties. Do you by any chance know where I can find a pattern.
New to sewing and quilting. If there is anything that is going to get me in gear to learn, it’s Harry Potter. I am going to get my two sisters to agree to start the Project of Doom starting January 2014. Now, I’m going to take this month and learn everything I can on paper piecing!! Learning with a Harry Potter project is a SUPER fun way to do it, too! There have been quite a few beginners tackle the project since it first started and they were experts by the end!
Does anyone know if the seam allowance is included in the pattern pieces? I just printed out Hedwig scaled up to be 12″ finished but some of the pieces are so small that even with a quarter inch seam allowance they would disappear! Anybody know?
Jennifer, Thank you so much for your beautiful patterns and your generosity to share your work. After seeing your pattern on Craftsy, I have decided I am going to learn to paper piece so I can make this quilt! I’m uber scared, but also plenty excited! Much love to you xx
It’s very much my pleasure, Sara! You can absolutely make this quilt. If you need a little support, I definitely recommend the PoD Facebook group. There are a lot of quilters working on it during the quilt along I’m hosting this year on fandominstitches.com and they are a very supportive lot. π https://www.facebook.com/groups/projectofdoom/
Hi there! I’ve just stumbled across your blocks and I’m absolutely in AWE of what you’ve created! I’m so excited to get started on the Harry Potter Project of Doom! Thank you so much for sharing your talents like this!! π
Hi, Melissa. The pattern is full color, so I’m not quite sure what you need. Can you drop me an email at sewhooked@gmail.com and I’d be happy to help the best I can.
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing the Project of Doom! I love puzzles and pattern piecing is like putting together fabric puzzles..I am hooked!! The Project of Doom was my first completed quilt and I gave it to my mom for Christmas last year. I think I am her favorite child now;) Today I finished the Disney Princess quilt and will give it to my niece for Christmas. So thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your love of quilting with those of us just discovering new talents and hobbies.
I am trying to print out the Ravenclaw Crest pattern for paper-piecing, but it tells me there are too many redirects. Is there another place I can find this, or could you somehow send it to me? Thank you.
Please bear with me. I am fairly new to quilting but really want to make this! I was reading through some of the comments to try to answer my questions. One thing I’m still not sure of is the seam allowance, I saw that you said that there was seam allowance in the units, but not the pieces themselves, does this mean I have to cut the pieces bigger than the patter pieces for the allowance? So sorry, probably a stupid question but I’m so new to all of this.
You have it exactly right, you do cut the pieces bigger so you’ll have seam allowance. If it helps, I have a whole page of paper piecing resources you might find useful: https://sewhooked.com/paper-piecing-resources/. Also, look for Fandom in Stitches and Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt on Facebook. I have communities there and there are lots of people of all skill levels willing to help. π
Iβm super excited to begin the PoD project, but curious if you have any guesses of approximately how much fabric you used in the background of each block? (Like the part that becomes the background of the shelf.) I want to be sure I have enough of it so that they are all the same. I saw on the layout instructions how much is needed to create the shelves themselves and whatnot, but Iβm curious on the 10β blocks, that background…does that make sense? Thank you!
The letter “x” is actually the letter “w” when I click on it. ‘Sew’ glad to find another H/P fan.
Oh, thanks, I’ll fiX that X right away! π
Dear friend, I tried to download the “S’, “H”, “O” and “N” but comes up with “File not found” Trying to spell my sons name “SHELDON” please help?
Hi Annie, I have it all sorted out now. Would you believe it was the difference between S and s? I’ve checked every letter now and all patterns are loading just fine! I hope you share a photo of what you’re working on when you’re done!

Jen, may I ask you a question please? I was trying to sew the monster book, I sewed the pieces, but they are way too bulky! How did you get your monster book looking so flat where as mine looks pregnant lol…help please?
Well, lots of ironing and I trimmed the seam allowances in layers to help the not be quite so bulky. Good luck!
