TTMT #120 – Talking Too Much

In which I prattle on about my new peg board, The Project of Doom, mail I’ve received and probably a few other things. I was feeling quite chatty when I recorded!

Something New

"It's real for us."

I have a new custom-stamped thumb ring that I bought for myself to commemorate my years as part of the Harry Potter fandom. This quote kind of sums it all up for me.

Made by foxwise.

EDIT: Thanks to the generosity of Rose, owner of foxwise, you can now get 15% off your purchase using the coupon code SEWHOOKED. How awesome is that?!

Talk to Me Tuesday later today!

Looking back at “Tails”

Tails Quilt, made for Gareth
Miles “Tails” Prower
74″ x 94″
made 2008, photographed July 2011

Once upon a time, I made a quilt for my son.  The coolest part about this quilt is that he designed it himself. He was 10* at the time.

Tails Chart

With a tiny bit of help from me, my kiddo created this chart using an image he loved of his favorite video game character.  The main part of the quilt, excluding the solid pieces of fabric at the top and bottom, is made of 1,054 individual 2″ squares.

I pieced almost all of the mosaic while at retreat with my bee in 2008 on my Singer 301A. I remember chain piecing from different colored stacks of 2 1/2″ squares that I had cut beforehand. I pieced and pieced…and pieced, all along following the chart and keeping track of everything with Post-It notes!

Much of the following is taken from a post I made over on Fandom Quilts back in June 2008, after I’d completed quilting and binding the quilt.

The blue sparkle background fabric was cut in 2 1/2″ strips (except the top and bottom, which were wider), with the other colors all being 2 1/2″ squares (2″ finished). I quilted 2″ squares to give the illusion that the entire quilt was made from squares. You can still see the chalk lines from the grid I drew on the solid fabric.

The entire quilt was quilted on my home sewing machine using a walking foot and straight-line quilting.

Hanging from the side of our trampoline (photo taken in 2008) just for SCALE. You can see the quilting better in here. I think you can also tell that there are two colors of orange, and the subtle difference between the white and off-white. We gave this trampoline away earlier this year, 2011.

This awesome swirly red fabric was chosen by the kiddo for the back.

For quilting, I outlined the major shapes (the white quilting in the pic is one of the hands). When there were more than two or three blocks of the same color, I quilted around to echo the outside shape.

Grid quilting the top and bottom of the quilt created the illusion of 2″ squares on the solid top and bottom pieces of the quilt top.

If you’ve made it all the way to the end of this post and you like what you see, visit The Quilting Gallery’s Quilts for Little Boys contest and vote! There are lots of great quilts there to see, including “Tails!”

Aces High

Aces High
Aces High is my fresh-off-the sewing machine pattern, available in PDF or hard copy.

I love this design. Seriously, love it. The idea came from my very best friends, Jewells. I drafted the whole thing during an email conversation we had, while we went back and forth making her idea a reality.

It’s now tested, proofread and ready to roll!  This was the most natural-feeling design I’ve worked on in a while for Sewhooked. Natural meaning…it just flowed. It worked. And I love the outcome. I hope you do, too. Don’t you just think this would look great in a game room or be a fantastic gift for a poker player?

Counting Down To Harry, Friday

Counting Down To Harry, Friday

This is it, the shirt I’m wearing to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2 tonight with my family. I have had a fantastic time sharing my Harry Potter tee collection with you all and I can’t wait to see the movie this evening. I will be there, with all Houses represented, as Hogwarts comes together to save the wizarding world.

This tee doesn’t have a story yet. I purchased it recently from Threadless after being on the waiting list for a reprint for ages. It’s soft and perfect and I love it. I hope it’s ready to catch the tears that are sure to fall as we proceed into the final battle.

For those of you that made it to the midnight movie…I hope you had an amazing ride. For Harry Potter fans everywhere…I’m with you, whatever happens.

Counting Down to Harry, Thursday

Counting down to Harry, Thursday
Hogwarts Crest Tee, purchased late 2000 or early 2001

Talk to Me Tuesday watchers will be familiar with this wall. That’s me and my bad self standing on a table. That’s also the infamous ticking clock that can be heard in many of my videos. The time? Just a little bit earlier today. The lanyards are from Lumos and Phoenix Rising, and you can see a  wee bit of a cross-stitch from the fabulous Shae.

This Hogwarts tee is the first Harry Potter item other than a book that I ever purchased. My family and I were fans from the fall of 2000 on.  I’d recently heard that the first book was going to be made into a movie. It never occurred to me that there would be Harry merchandise. Yeah, duh, I know, but I just wasn’t thinking in that direction. Then, one day, we walked into a store (I think it was a now-defunct WB shop) and there was one Hogwarts tee left on the rack. Just the one. It’s actually a child’s XL tee, but I did not care. There weren’t any adult sizes, or any other sizes to be had. This was it…and it was mine.

I wore this shirt to opening night of the first four movies, along with my hand-crafted HP earrings, towing my kids along in the costumes of their choice. Wearing this tee, I watched Harry discover that he is, indeed, a wizard, saw he and Ron crash into a very angry tree, saw Harry and Hermione rescue Sirius, and watched Cedric Diggory die. I broke this shirt out once again for Deathly Hallows part 1, and once again, inundated it with my tears. You know when and you know why.

Could I have known in 2000 what this fandom or this journey would mean in my life and the life of my family? No…I could have never dreamed of such a thing.

Because I was not able to get tickets to the midnight release at my favorite theater, my family and I will be going to see DH2 tomorrow instead. In some ways, I hate to miss going to the midnight show when so many of the people I know will be snuggling down with with tissues across the country. The anticipation, the caffeine, the solidarity are all reasons to go to the midnight show and reminds me very much of a conference-like atmosphere. Everyone is there for the same reason and we all know it.

Even so, I’m also okay with waiting just a little longer. I’ll be with my family for the final movie, and that’s just as it should be.

Since I’m not seeing the movie tonight, tomorrow will be the last day of my t-shirt countdown and I will share with you the shirt that I’m wearing to the final battle. It’s been a blast revisiting some of my favorite Harry Potter shirts, many of which are now retired. It’s the end of an era for the fandom, but I have no doubt, that we, the fans, will continue to carry Hogwarts in our hearts.

Whether it’s by page or screen, Hogwarts will always welcome you home.
