Free Pattern Friday – Metroid Charts

free-pattern-friday

At last and as promised, the Metroid charts are here!

metroid quilt final

Earlier this month, I finished the quilt above, dubbed “Quilt-Roid.”  See my Talk to Me Tuesday about it here.

Below, I share the charts for Samus (the tough lady shown here in yellow) and the Metroid (the creepy little critter in the top right).

Please note, this is NOT a pattern for the entire quilt. These are charts to piece the two characters with some additional suggestions and information. You can use this to make something similar to what I did or use the charts in your own creations.

I’m planning to use just the head part of the Samus pattern sometime soon to make a cushion for my Metroid-loving daughter.

Find my Fandom-themed patterns here on Sewhooked under Free Quilt Patterns: Free Fandom Quilt Patterns. I will also be posting this to Fandom in Stitches in the near future. It’s in the rather long queue!

Helpful Hints

#notahalloweenquilt

Pre-cut your fabric squares to save time.

#metroid progress! #samus

I like to print my chart and then break it into smaller chunks so that I don’t get overwhelmed.

I start from the left and work my way across, marking off what I’ve done as I go so I don’t get lost.

Some tiny #chainpiecing! #metroidquilt

Chain piecing is EVERYTHING.

After a week of not much sewing I've made some good progress on the #metroidquilt! I'm keeping the wrap up a surprise until it's complete and gifted to @spleenarinobambino. I hope to have it ready to quilt today. #tinypiecing #solids #chainpiecing

20180608_205307

I chain piece from the top down, keeping the threads between the rows intact so that nothing will be out of place. When the rows are together, go back and sew together the horizontal seams, matching seams.

It's time to make #homemade spray starch! My preferred recipe is 1/4 cup liquid starch, 2 oz vodka, 10 drops of lavender and approximately 4 cups of distilled water. #spraystarch

Use my homemade spray starch for a smooth, flat finish. I find this especially useful when working with solids. Recipe adapted from one shared years ago by my friend Linda.

  • 1/4 cup liquid starch
  • 2 oz plain/non-flavored vodka (If you don’t have vodka and don’t want a whole bottle, a sample size bottle works great!)
  • 10 – 12 drops of lavender
  • approximately 3.5 cups of distilled water in a 32 oz spray bottle

Free Pattern Friday – Satia’s Shuriken

free-pattern-friday

Back in 2012, when Fandom in Stitches was in its infancy, a friend and then-TTMT video maker, Satia, shared a drawing for a pattern idea:

Original drawing by Satia Schutz. Used with permission.

Shuriken

Using her Naruto-inspired drawing, I turned her design into a pattern to paper piece.

Today, I’m sharing this pattern once again. No updates are needed from the 2012 version because it is a clean and simple pattern, with pieces to make a 6″ or 10″ block.

You can see the 2012 blog post from Fandom in Stitches here.

Enjoy!

Free Pattern Friday – Diamonds in the Rails Quilt Pattern

Diamonds in the Rails by Jennifer Ofenstein b

A few weeks ago, I shared the wedding quilt I designed for my husband’s brother and his new wife. I dubbed the quilt “Diamonds in the Rails” because of the diamond pattern inside of the more traditional rail fence.

This was supposed to be a tutorial, but I guess I should know myself better than that! I started writing and what began as a tutorial ended up as a full-blown pattern. Oops!

It’s been a while since I had a Free Pattern Friday, so why not?

My version is made using Northcott Stonehenge for the “rails” and Northcott Artisan spirit (I sadly can’t remember the specific print name) for the “diamonds.” All of this fabric was left over from my Project of Doom 2015. I talk more about this quilt and it’s design in this TTMT.

Diamonds in the Rails, as shown, finishes 76” x 88” (plus 1/2″ for binding). I’ve included some ideas for variations in the pattern including how to make a smaller version as well as a coloring page for those of you who like to plan your fabric placement.

Diamond in the Rails is an easy peasy pattern you can crank out in no time. Use strip & chain piecing to make it go even faster. If you make your own version, I’d love to see it!

Enjoy! ♥

Free Pattern Friday – Chocolate Box

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

As promised, we’re back to quilt patterns this week!

Today’s freebie, Chocolate Box, is a larger, simplified version of a traditional Garden Lattice block. It includes instructions for both a traditionally pieced 14″ finished block and a 6″ paper pieced pattern that can be enlarged if desired.

I’ve included everything you need to use directional fabrics for fussy cutting. I’ve made two quilts using this pattern so far and both were fussy cut to feature fun fabrics!

First #finish of 2016! I started to make my #ufo2016 list yesterday and couldn't bear to have this one on there once again. Beautiful Australia themed fabrics were a gift from my friend Cat. I paired them with #benartex Fossil Fern and used my Chocolate B

I created this 70″ x 84″ version for myself using fabrics from Australia that the lovely Cat Magraith gifted me over several years. I added Fossil Fern to create a lovely, snuggly quilt. The instructions to make this colorway are included.

Quilt for Tara (Chocolate Box)

This little quilt gave chocolate box its name. It was gifted to my friend Cat’s daughter.

Free Pattern – Chocolate Box!

Chocolate Box, a free 14

Download Free Pattern or Get it Free on Craftsy!

Twice now, I’ve shared fun projects made with this very simple traditionally pieced block above. I’ve had several requests to share this free pattern, and you know I love to share, so here you go!

This pattern is absolutely free because I think it is perfect for charity quilts. I designed it to be used with novelty prints, which make absolutely wonderful quilts for children. I plan to make several out of fabric I have on hand for The Linus Connection.

During my research to make sure this was indeed my own design, I did discover a similar free pattern from McCall’s called Garden Path.  The McCall’s block is made with different sized fabric cuts but creates a similar effect. Their version is also free. You can find it here.

Just like all of my patterns, Chocolate Box was designed in EQ!

Included in the free Chocolate Box pattern are the instructions for the traditionally pieced 14″ block (14 1/2″ with seam allowance) and a 6″ paper pieced version, because that’s what I do!

Also included is a chart and fabric amounts for making the Australian Quilt (shown below).
Chocolate Challenge Quilt (Chocolate Box)

Download Free Pattern or Get it Free on Craftsy!

The Chocolate Box pattern started with The Chocolate Challenge, a friendly challenge between my local sewing friends taken up at our 2014 Quilt Retreat. We all swapped a variety of chocolate themed fabric and brought back a completed project for 2014. This one is mine (still to be quilted!)

Australia Quilt

I loved my Chocolate quilt so much that I decided to use the same pattern to create a quilt with a collection of Australian-themed patterns that were gifted to me by my friend Cat from Adelaide, SA, over the course several years. With the help of some Fossil Fern fabric, I created this 70″ x 84″ quilt top (also to be quilted!). The layout instructions and fabric amounts for this quilt are included for free in the Chocolate Box pattern.

St. Patrick Shamrock!

Shamrock Sample

Are you wearing green today? Even more importantly, do you have green fabric?

Good, because I have a brand new free paper pieced pattern to share with you!

I thought a fun and simple Shamrock pattern would be just the thing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

5″ paper pieced Shamrock Pattern

After years of hand-drafting all my patterns in Photoshop, I’ve been learning  EQ7. The learning curve is finally getting smaller and I still prefer to color and number my own patterns in Photoshop, but I have discovered that one of my favorite things to do with EQ7 are fun quilt layouts! This one is super simple, but I hope it inspires you to create a little Shamrock quilt of your own!

Paper Piecing – Boobalicious

or Get Print from Google Drive

I got a great email request last week from Grace.  She was inspired by Shae’s Y-Front quilt to make a bra-themed quilt to raffle off as part of a fundraiser the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure.  I don’t generally take commissions, but I will do a special request, especially when it’s something that touches my heart!
