Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Vol. 9 Blog Tour!

Welcome to Sewhooked and thanks for stopping by for the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Blog Tour for Volume 9!

If it’s your first visit to Sewhooked, welcome! If you’re an old friend, welcome back!

This is a super exciting day for me. Not only do I completely love my design for this issue, but it’s the fourth time one of my blocks was chosen for 100 Blocks, which you have to admit, is super happy-making!

Be sure and stick around to the end for TWO awesome giveaways!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein 2

Here it is, my delicious block, Yum Yum Strawberry Cake! You can find it on page 38.

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

This part never gets old for me!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein block

Yum Yum, Strawberry Cake was born from a sketch of cake. It was just a doodle really. I was having coffee, and as I tend to do, was doodling as I talked. And then there was cake!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

This particular block was made using a variety of fabrics from my stash. There’s a little Michael Miller, some Moda and some Timeless Treasures, as well as a few miscellaneous scraps for the stem. Maybe we should say Yum Yum Fabric!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

To add a bit of interest, I decided a declaration of the deliciousness of cake was in order! I use a variety of methods to transfer embroidery to fabric, but for this project, I decided Saral wax free paper would work best. It comes off fairly easily, so it isn’t great for highly detailed embroidery, but it’s perfect for something simple and fast like “yum yum.”

saral paper

You can find Saral paper on Amazon or at your local arts & crafts supply.

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein tracing

Here’s what the traced word looks like. Perfect for stitching!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

While working on my design for Yum Yum Strawberry Cake, I kept coming back to the idea of placemats. How fun, how easy and how very summery! I created four coordinating placemats with four different cakes in similar styles. You can find this photo in the same issue of QM, page 20.

I can’t even begin to tell you how happy these placemats make me! I hope to be able to share instructions for them very soon!

And now, the part of this post you’ve been waiting for…

Paper Piecing Vintage: April

Paper Piecing Vintage - April

Welcome April and today’s pattern, Rambling Maid …and that’s no joke!

Rambling Maid is inspired by the classic quilt block Old Maid’s Ramble.

This is a young, updated and entirely paper pieced version and I don’t thinks she’s too worried about matrimony, hence, Rambling Maid!

As with all the blocks from PPV, Rambling Maid is entirely paper pieced and both 6″ and 12″ patterns are included.

Paper Piecing Vintage - April

Already registered? Download your updated BOM file now!

Like many of the PPV blocks, the pieces for Rambling Maid are easy to pre-cut with a little measuring before you start.

Save some time by following these bonus directions for the 12″ block:

  • Big background triangles = 2 – 6″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 4 triangles)
  • Outside corners = 2 – 5″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 4 triangles)
  • Center = 3 1/2″ square
  • Flying Geese = 10 – 3″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 20 triangles)
  • Flying Geese bodies = 2 of each color: 2 – 4 1/2″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 8 triangles, 4 in each color)
  • Have fun!

Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Block
April is my birthday month and I have a very special favor to ask! All Paper Piecing Vintage Participants are cordially invited to share a 6″ signature block for the Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Quilt! Use fabric leftover from your PPV quilt and then just follow the directions in the pattern.

This is a very special side project to commemorate your participation in the PPV BOM. If you participated in The Project of Doom or There and Back Again, then you know that Signature Quilts are near and dear to my heart and are my favorite way to commemorate projects like this!

See the Project of Doom Signature Quilt.

Rose!
For those of you anxiously awaiting the name of our newest furry family member, I’d like to introduce Rose! Her name is inspired by four of our family’s favorite fandoms: The Lord of the Rings (Samwise’s wife, Rose Cotton), Harry Potter (Rose Weasley), Doctor Who (Rose Tyler), and Homestuck (Rose Lalonde). We’ve pretty much covered all bases for all two-legged family members! Also, and most importantly, she just looks like a Rose. 🙂
See you tomorrow with Paper Piecing Vintage: April!

Paper Piecing Vintage: March

Ice Cream Bowl, March PPV Pattern

Hello, March!

I’ve continued to be thrilled with each and every Paper Piecing Vintage block photo that you all have shared. Thank you so much for joining me on this journey!

Today, we have the third installment in our Block of the Month: Ice Cream Bowl.

Ice Cream Bowl is a classic pineapple quilt block. The “bowl” comes from the color placement and the optical illusion that it creates.

Not only are pineapple blocks one of my all-time favorite quilt blocks, a smaller version of this block is my go-to pattern for teaching beginners!

As with all the blocks from PPVIce Cream Bowl is entirely paper pieced and both 6″ and 12″ patterns are included.

As a bonus this month, there is a simplified 6″ pattern included for those of you not wanting to piece quite so many pineapple leaves! Want to make it 12″? Just print, cut in fourths, copy at 200% then glue or tape together!

Ice Cream Bowl, March PPV Pattern

Ice Cream Bowl, March PPV Pattern

Here are a few helpful hints:

  • Pre-cut strips for the “leaves.” 1″ works great for the 12″ pineapple and the bonus 6″ block. 3/4″ is plenty for the 6″ version.
  • Once you get a few rounds out from the center, you can prepare all four “leaves” at once (shown above). Instead of stitching one line at a time, stitch one, pull thread a little out from your machine, turn the pattern, then stitch the next until you’ve finished all four!
  • If making the 6″ block, make your life much easier by trimming seam allowances to 1/8″. That will reduce bulk and make it easier to work with.
  • Enjoy!

Haven’t signed up for Paper Piecing Vintage yet? Registration for the entire year is just $12. That’s 12 patterns in two sizes (plus the occasional bonus, like this month!), entirely paper pieced for one awesome price! All patterns for the year so far are included when you download.
