Slightly Twisted, Revisted

slightly twisted

Once upon a time, I designed  a little paper pieced block I dubbed Slightly Twisted.  It’s built basically like a log cabin, but as you can see, it’s, well, slightly twisted.

It was created a for a block swap group that I was part of. This particular block was my contribution as a block angel for a member that hadn’t received all her quilt blocks. I enjoyed making it, and then sent it on it’s merry way. Other than sharing here on Sewhooked, I haven’t thought about that block much since 2008.

While spiffing up the New & Improved Sewhooked, I revisited all of my free patterns. A few patterns havegone to the Old Patterns Home, but most of them made the cut and have now joined Guest Designer patterns for the new Free Pattern page. Many of the Free Pattern are due to be cleaned up and updated. It’s good for me to go back and see where I was when I designed each pattern. They all bring back memories because I know who they were for, and for the most part, can remember what was going on in my life at the time I was drafting and piecing the pattern.

Slightly Twisted got it’s update today.

Slightly Twisted looks posh in Red & Black

After importing my original pattern into EQ7, I redrafted the pattern using my original drawing lines. As I’ve mentioned here before, the fun thing about EQ7 is the ability to change colors and fabrics and to do entire quilt layouts just a few mouse clicks.

So, away I went!

Don’t care for the black and red? How about mirror images in a variety of colors?

How’s that for a simple paper pieced block?

Here’s a challenge for you – make either of these quilts in the colors of your choice, post a photo in our Flickr group and I’ll send you a free goody in the mail!

Embroidery…continued

Bluebird Quilts Retro BOM Block 5

Bluebird Quilts Retro Nine Patch BOM, May 2011

I bet with all the Fandom In Stitches talk (which is going amazingly, btw!), you thought I’ve forgotten about my embroidery, huh? I have not and am, in fact, still going strong. I just finished May’s block, which makes five total. My understanding is that the rest of the block are paper pieced. I’m curious to see how the rest of the project turns out! With all the things I organize, it’s a nice break to work on a project where I can just follow instructions. The BOM  has given me great practice with hand stitching and I really feel like I’m improving. My PoD blocks are coming along nicely, but I want to save those until I get them all done, so I can have one big reveal. I know, I know, I can’t being a quilt tease!

Oh, Portal!

Aperture Science Aperture Science

Aperture Science, a paper pieced quilt block. L – EQ7 version, R-my pieced block

For a brief period in April and May, my thirteen year old became my personal assistant. He was helpful with laundry, with taking out the trash, yardwork…you name it!

While he is genuinely a good kid,  like most people that have jobs, he did it for the money. You see, Portal 2
was on the horizon, and as I was eagerly informed, it was a Must Have Game.

He worked hard, earned his money, and now owns (and has beaten) Portal II.

When I started Fandom In Stitches, the first comment he made to me was how amazingly cool it would be to have Portal quilt blocks. Spoken like a true fan with a quilty mom! He helped me choose a few that I could work on, the first being Aperture Science.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve transitioned from designing my patterns exclusively in Photoshop to using a combination of EQ7 and Photoshop. The advantage of this is being able to have sample images before I ever piece a block. It gives me a really good idea where a block is going and if I’m getting just what I want out of it.

Above, you can see the EQ version that I mocked up after drafting my pattern on the left and my actual pieced block on the right. Pretty cool, huh?

He loves the new block and has requested an Aperture Science pillowcase…perfect for dragging to sleep-overs with his video game loving friends!

Today, I have Birthday Feet

Birthday Feet

My best friend makes socks (and many other great things, too!). It’s just possible that she makes the best socks in the world.

Of course, I might be a little biased since I have several pair of the little beauties.

This is my newest pair. They’re perfect. Perfect color. Perfect weight. Perfectly soft. She made them for my birthday.

I love them.

I hope your day is full of best friends, hand knitted socks and chocolate!

Cinco de DMC!

DMC

When I started this whole embroidery gig about a week and a half ago, I had about a dozen colors of DMC left over from my friendship bracelet days when my kids were younger.  After stitching four blocks, I have significantly less than that.

As of today, thanks to the generosity of one ultra-fabulous and equally as generous Queen Shirley, I now have a HUGE and extraordinarily well-organized collection of DMC.

Project of Doom book titles, here I come!
