Paper Piecing Vintage: April

Paper Piecing Vintage - April

Welcome April and today’s pattern, Rambling Maid …and that’s no joke!

Rambling Maid is inspired by the classic quilt block Old Maid’s Ramble.

This is a young, updated and entirely paper pieced version and I don’t thinks she’s too worried about matrimony, hence, Rambling Maid!

As with all the blocks from PPV, Rambling Maid is entirely paper pieced and both 6″ and 12″ patterns are included.

Like many of the PPV blocks, the pieces for Rambling Maid are easy to pre-cut with a little measuring before you start.

Save some time by following these bonus directions for the 12″ block:

  • Big background triangles = 2 – 6″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 4 triangles)
  • Outside corners = 2 – 5″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 4 triangles)
  • Center = 3 1/2″ square
  • Flying Geese = 10 – 3″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 20 triangles)
  • Flying Geese bodies = 2 of each color: 2 – 4 1/2″ squares, cut in half on the diagonal (makes 8 triangles, 4 in each color)
  • Have fun!

Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Block
April is my birthday month and I have a very special favor to ask! All Paper Piecing Vintage Participants are cordially invited to share a 6″ signature block for the Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Quilt! Use fabric leftover from your PPV quilt and then just follow the directions in the pattern.

This is a very special side project to commemorate your participation in the PPV BOM. If you participated in The Project of Doom or There and Back Again, then you know that Signature Quilts are near and dear to my heart and are my favorite way to commemorate projects like this!

See the Project of Doom Signature Quilt.

Flock of Crows!

Last week, I shared an open invitation for those of you playing along with Paper Piecing Vintage to share photos of your blocks with the Sewhooked flickr group and BOY did you come through!

Every version of the PPV January block, The King’s Crows is different and wonderful! I love seeing your fabric choices and speculating as to how your finished quilts will look.

One of the best parts for me is seeing so many familiar names. Thank you, friends, for being part of my first ever paid BOM and helping to support both Sewhooked and Fandom In Stitches. You all ROCK!

PPV BOM JANUARY
This first block was pieced by Amber! Amber is The Official PPV Pattern Tester. She tries every pattern before it goes live to double check that my instructions make sense and that everything prints correctly. She also puts up with endless texts about the crazy ideas that spill out of my head. She deserves a cookie factory just for that!

PPV January 12in Kings Crow crop
This block is by Jewells, my best girlfriend for the last 20 years. Despite totally not having time to BOM with us, she’s doing it anyway. She is by for the most supportive BFF a girl could have!

Paper piecing Vintage BOM, block 1
By TweLoQ, fellow designer over on Fandom In Stitches. She’s created her own layout for her PPV blocks!

These next blocks were shared by other PPVers, most, if not all of whom are part of the Paper Piecing Vintage Facebook group.

The joy I get from seeing your blocks is wonderful!

Thank you to each and every one of you for sharing!

Bluebird Quilts Retro BOM Block 5

Bluebird Quilts Retro Nine Patch BOM, May 2011

I bet with all the Fandom In Stitches talk (which is going amazingly, btw!), you thought I’ve forgotten about my embroidery, huh? I have not and am, in fact, still going strong. I just finished May’s block, which makes five total. My understanding is that the rest of the block are paper pieced. I’m curious to see how the rest of the project turns out! With all the things I organize, it’s a nice break to work on a project where I can just follow instructions. The BOM  has given me great practice with hand stitching and I really feel like I’m improving. My PoD blocks are coming along nicely, but I want to save those until I get them all done, so I can have one big reveal. I know, I know, I can’t being a quilt tease!
