United Federation of Planets, embroidered

United Federation of Planets symbol, hand embroidered on cotton fabric with black DMC.

If you watched this week’s Talk To Me Tuesday, you’ve already seen this little bit of geekery. I thought a close-up photo might be nice to share.

Recently, I stumbled across an awesome set of Star Trek vector graphics by dridgett while looking for something totally different.

Since it’s no secret that I’m a Big Ole Geek, it’s probably no surprise that I thought the symbols would be perfect for stitching! I have a small collection of Star Trek quilt blocks, patterns available on Fandom In Stitches, and I’m thinking this one will add nicely to my growing pile.

Oh Sweet Mushroom

Embroidered Mushrooms from a Vintage Pattern

I’m elbow-deep in preparations for the blog hop, which is keeping me from my usual big, happy posts.

Not to worry, I’m sure you will have had quite enough of me by the end of April!

I shared this little piece in Talk to Me Tuesday earlier this week. It’s my interpretation of a vintage design. This was made purely for the pleasure of stitching.

EDITED TO ADD: Free Oh Sweet Mushroom Embroidery Pattern!

Progress Sweet Progress

Embroidery Sampler in Progress

I’ve been working on many decidedly un-crafty things as I gear up for my participation in STITCHED. It’s a very exciting time for me as I’m getting my workshop polished and ready for the site’s unveiling.

In the meantime, I have been doing a tiny bit of handwork while I wait for my kids at various and sundry places. I told you in this post about the linen sampler I’m working on .

Embroidery Sampler in Progress

So many parts of my crafty life flow into my professional life that it gives me just a little extra joy to work on something that is just for me.

I’ll show this off a bit more in Talk To Me Tuesday tomorrow.

Taste The Rainbow!

Vintage Linen SampleI recently acquired a pre-stamped, very old fashioned linen sampler, complete with age spots. After having it in my stash for a couple of months, I’ve decide what it really needs is rainbow thread.

Talk about some seriously happy stitching! Just having this in my hands makes me feel content.

Let’s Talk Turkey

Turkey Talk from Sewhooked

It’s time to talk turkey, specifically about Turkey Talk!

So, there’s this idea I’ve had for a long, long time. It didn’t really start to take shape until after I learned to embroider for The Project of Doom. Before that time, the design was never quite right.

And then, inspiration!

My turkey was too quiet.

It was simple. He just needed a few words.

Words are a miraculous thing. Once added, I couldn’t wait to get this wall hanging made to share with you!

A Little Happiness

Smile Every Day

I love to make gifts to my friends, especially when that friend is someone I have not seen in quite some time.

So, when presented with the opportunity to see a friend from my childhood, I decided to embroider a little something just for her.

I adapted this free pattern so that it would reflect what I wanted to say with my gift.

Stitch up one of these for yourself or a friend, just as a reminder to smile every day!

You can get my version of the pattern for free right here.

Embroidery…continued

Bluebird Quilts Retro BOM Block 5

Bluebird Quilts Retro Nine Patch BOM, May 2011

I bet with all the Fandom In Stitches talk (which is going amazingly, btw!), you thought I’ve forgotten about my embroidery, huh? I have not and am, in fact, still going strong. I just finished May’s block, which makes five total. My understanding is that the rest of the block are paper pieced. I’m curious to see how the rest of the project turns out! With all the things I organize, it’s a nice break to work on a project where I can just follow instructions. The BOM  has given me great practice with hand stitching and I really feel like I’m improving. My PoD blocks are coming along nicely, but I want to save those until I get them all done, so I can have one big reveal. I know, I know, I can’t being a quilt tease!

Cinco de DMC!

DMC

When I started this whole embroidery gig about a week and a half ago, I had about a dozen colors of DMC left over from my friendship bracelet days when my kids were younger.  After stitching four blocks, I have significantly less than that.

As of today, thanks to the generosity of one ultra-fabulous and equally as generous Queen Shirley, I now have a HUGE and extraordinarily well-organized collection of DMC.

Project of Doom book titles, here I come!

Embroidery, continued.

Bluebird Quilts Retro BOM Block 3 Bluebird Quilts Retro BOM Block 4

The embroidery adventure has continued with Blue Bird Quilts Retro BOM block 3 and 4. 5 is not available yet, so I’m thinking hard about how to tackled my Project of Doom blocks. I want to make sure that I know exactly what I want on those blocks before I make a single stitch! In case you missed it, Week 16 was posted yesterday. I still can’t believe we’re halfway through our BOW!
