An Unusual Day

Remember that post, oh, a few hours ago, in which I mentioned that Craft had featured my Harry Potter quilt?

Well, later, this happened:

Harry Potter Quilt on The Daily What

A friend emailed me a link to The Daily What, where they have my quilt listed as the Kickass Quilt of the Day.

It’s been such a crazy day, with my inbox exploding, Twitter tweeting and Facebook, well, whatever FB does.

The evolution of the Harry Potter quilting community that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of over the last five or six years is the best part of all of this for me. Because this quilt? I finished it in 2007.

If  you’re not a regular Sewhooked visitor or one of those fantastically awesome HP fans that sees the quilt and instantly thinks “I get it,” you might think I’m just a crazy fan with nothing else to do. You’d be both right and wrong. Sure, I am a crazy fan, I won’t ever deny that, but boy do I have other things to do. The important part is how I choose to spend my time.

Make what you love. Love what you make.

How Wednesday Greeted Me

My HP Quilt on Craft

I woke up this morning to an inbox full of messages and posts on my Twitter and Facebook about a certain quilt showing up on Craft this morning.  When I clicked the link, my eyes were filled with the image above.

Woah.

And you know what? There’s even a link to the Project of Doom!

You all know that if I love anything, it’s paper piecing and fandom. Despite having completed my quilt in 2007, I still love quilting Harry and I still love my fandom friends.

Thanks, Craft, for sharing my labor of love and thank you, thank you to everyone that was excited enough about it to get in touch with me first thing this morning!

Remember, all Harry Potter free quilt patterns on Sewhooked, as well as other fandom patterns, both mine and the Sewhooked Guest Designers‘, are moving to Fandom In Stitches. I’m two designers away from having the Harry Potter page complete, where you’ll find all HP patterns organized by categories in my favorite easy to browse thumbnail format.

Fandom patterns will continue to be available on Sewhooked for a limited time and then those pages will automatically re-direct to FiS.

One Cross Stitch To Rule Them All

The One Family

Some time ago, the amazing Shae (tumblr, blog, etsy) gifted me with an amazing piece of cross stitch that she designed not only for me, but for my family. She knows we’re big Lord of the Rings fans and ingeniously combined our name with a little fandom awesome and created the gorgeous piece of cross stitch you see.

Cross Stitch by shaebay

The edges were unfinished when I received her awesome work and I knew I had to do something fabulous with it. The result is what you see in the top photo.

The fabrics I used were all Fairy Frost from Michael Miller. LOVE FF…love, love, love!

After starting with Shae’s amazing cross stitch, I was able to finish everything but the outside border in one sitting. I added the last border a little later so it would fit the frame of my choice.

The One Family - trimming the quilt

I intentionally made the outside border larger than it needed to be. Then, using the glass from the frame I purchased as well as the grid on my cutting mat, I lined up the piece as evenly as possible.

Then, I trimmed!

Not shown – I also trimmed a piece of cotton batting to the same size to help hold the quilt in place inside the frame. The result is what you see above!

On the back of the frame, I made a note of who made each part of the project and when. It’s just a simple note, but it’ll be awesome for future generations of Ofensteins to know!

Before deciding on this layout, I played around with ideas in EQ7 as seen in my pre-retreat post! When it came down to it, what I really wanted were earth tones (with a little sparkle!) and triangles. I love triangles in quilts.

I have so much more wonderful post-retreat projects to share! See you then!

TTMT #103 – 359 Days

It literally took me ALL DAY to upload this video. Between a faulty internet connection and a really long video, I thought I would miss my first Tuesday since starting TTMT in 2009! Fortunately, I did *not* miss posting on Tuesday and I hope the video is worth the wait.

Herein lies massive post-quilt-retreat Show & Tell! There will be a photo post in the near future. I’m just waiting for a wee bit of sunshine so I can get fabulous out-of-doors photos!

New Project of Doom block tomorrow!
