Batiks On Black 6″ Paper Pieced Block Drawing

Photobucket

I can only ponder an idea for so long before jumping on it and making it a reality. Maybe that’s why I have don’t ever get quite enough sleep!

Introducing The Batiks On Black 6″ Paper Pieced Block Drawing!

How to participate:

Make a 6″ (6 1/2″ unfinished) paper pieced block, any design, made with batiks on a black background. Send that block to me via snail mail. It will go into a pot and on the December 15 January 19 Talk To Me Tuesday, a name will be drawn from all entries. That person wins ALL the blocks sent to me between now and December 15 the week of January 12, 2010 (deadline extended!).

What patterns?:

Blocks must be paper pieced in order to participate. You can use any pattern you’d like, but here’s where I sweeten the deal. If you use a sewhooked pattern, you will receive 2 entries instead of 1. Nice, eh? If you use a sewhooked pattern AND post it to the sewhooked Batiks on Black flickr group, you will receive 3 entries. Even nicer!

Size:

Blocks need to be 6″ (6 1/2″ unfinished). You can use a smaller pattern (most sewhooked patterns are 5″) and add sashing, or you can size it up, as long as you follow the Batik on Black theme.

The Paper On the Back of This Block:

Ordinarily, I’d say leave the paper on your blocks. However, since this is a drawing and there could possibly be loads of blocks, I think it would be much nicer to the winner to remove the paper. SO, either use sashing to lock in the possibly bias paper pieced seams and then square it to 6 1/2″ OR make a 6 1/2″ paper pieced block and then staystitch the block 1/8″ from the outside edge and then remove the paper before sending.

Ready to Send?

When you’re ready to send, email batiksonblack@sewhooked.org and I will send you my mailing address. What? You didn’t think I was going to post it here, did you? 😉  When you send your block, be sure to include your name, mailing adddress, email address and user/screen name (optional).  Only your first name or screen name and location will be posted if you win!

Why should you trust me?

Well, I’ve been organizing swaps and challenges for several years. I spent almost two years as the Swap and Challenge Elf at HarryPotterCrafts Yahoo! Group, have organized challenges for the Livejournal communities: hp_paperpiecing, paperpieced, and both challenges and swaps for twilight_crafts. I also have hosted a monthly drawing on hp_paperpiecing for the last two years, giving away fabric from my own stash each month for participation.  I promise I won’t keep your squares, no matter how tempted I might be!

crochet: Starknuts June Challenge

Meet Crookshanks.

Yesterday, the Harry Potter knit & crochet community starknuts posted a new challenge for June.  I loved the idea so much, I, ehem, am done.

What?! I had a spare hour and just the right yarn so…

Crook is made with Nimoe’s Miuku The Cat pattern and Yarn Bee Cameo yarn and has a DMC scarf.

He’s a clever kitteh, but is also a very brave Gryffindor.

I added a join, ch 1 at the end of each round, which I found easiest to work with because of the fuzz factor.

Add it to your ravelry queue

His scarf has stripes (and gave me a cramp in my right hand…)

Bottlebrush tail and slightly cocky ears.  Love him!

Meeting some of the family…

A HUGE thanks to my lovely daughter, for her creative input.

If you make a Sew Awesome Craft or any pattern, craft or recipe from sewhooked,  I’d love to see a photo.  Email me or add it to the sewhooked flickr group.

A Personal Update and Some Challenges

Wow, can it really be so long since I last posted?  I’m somewhat ashamed to realize how long it’s been since a new craft or pattern has graced the sewhooked blog.

I have been having a lot of Real Life lately, which I will be talking about here fairly soon.

In the meantime, I’d like to pimp two craft challenges, both for LiveJournal groups that I moderate or help moderate.

Twilight Crafts Challenge #5

There are new tutorials and a new paper pieced pattern in the works.  Until then, I remain yours craftily,

Challenge: Winner!

Photobucket
Thank you so much to everyone that participated in the first ever Friends of sewhooked Challenge!  We had a handful of entries, and I appreciated each and every one!

The only requirement was to make any craft or pattern from sewhooked or the sewhooked blog and then post a photo either on the Friends of sewhooked flickr group or on the sewhooked_talk Livejournal community.    I also accepted emailed challenge entries.
The winner was chosen at random.  Thanks to my friend Cat for indulging me by choosing a number without any idea what I was up to. 😉

Without further ado, our winner!  ferraras on flickr!

Friends of Sewhooked Challenge

If you know me, then you know I like contests, challenges and drawings. I have a drawing every month on my Livejournal group, hp_paperpiecing, with a Challenge thrown in whenever I can manage it.

It’s about time the love is spread to the rest of my crafty universe!  I’m proud to announce the first ever Friends of sewhooked challenge!

Photobucket

If you’re a Friend of sewhooked (which equates to a friend of Jennifer!), all you have to do to participate is to post a photo of something you’ve made from Sewhooked to the Friends of sewhooked flickr pool by Monday, February 16, 2009, 10 am, CST (U.S.).

Follow any pattern or tutorial and then share your photos…that’s it! I’ll draw a name from the pool and notify the winner via pm or email. Please, no cross-posting entries for the hp_paperiecing challenge.   I know you won’t, but I had to say it…just in case!

The winner’s craft will be features on the Sewhooked and that person will receive a hardback copy of Scrap Basket Crafts: Over 50 Quick and Easy Projects to Make from Fabric Scraps.

If this works out, I’ll have another drawing in the future. Fun, fun, fun!
