Aslan: Not A Tame Lion (close-up)

I’ve gotten a bit behind sharing my Summer of Stitches designs, so we’re going to have two weeks’ worth today!

Aslan: Not A Tame Lion

For the Chronicles of Narnia theme, I worked on an sketch of Aslan, aided by my bff, who suggested the quote “Not a tame lion.”

I love how he turned out and can think of a handful of other fandoms he’d work for, too!

For the most recent theme, I ‚̧ T.V., I decided to go with one of the two shows my family rarely misses, The Colbert Report. After toying with a variety of themes, I decided to focus on Colbert’s arched brow.

The text, once again, was suggested by bff, Jewells… “Truthiness.” Seriously, what would I do without her? ūüėČ

Some Infinities

Our Little Infinity

Our Little Infinity

Yesterday, I shared the Interview with the Vampire-inspired design (also below) that I created for The Summer of Stitching on Fandom in Stitches.

Not long after posting that, I realized there was something I really, really wanted to make and share. ¬†As I’ve mentioned many, many times before, I am a big fan of John Green. The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time I read it and I grow more fond of the story with each re-read.

Our Little Infinity took me a little over three hours to draft, trace & stitch the above pattern.¬†It was also designed¬†for The¬†Summer of Stitching¬†¬†on¬†Fandom In Stitches¬†for the I¬†‚̧¬†Books theme.

Apparently, I just can’t stop stitching!

Okay? Okay.

It’s

Monty Python - It's
It’s
7″ embroidered

I’ve had such fun this summer challenging myself to create a new design for each week of¬†The Summer of Stitching¬†on Fandom In Stitches. I’ve even waited to start my designs until the announcement, despite knowing what comes next. I do love a challenge!

The latest theme was Monty Python, and I couldn’t create just one! Using Monty Python’s Flying Circus for my inspiration, I used two of what I think are the most iconic things from the show.

One being the infamous “It’s” as spoken by the It’s Man prior to the intro to every episode of MPFC.

If you’re feeling patient, this is 9+ minutes of the It’s Man!

The Ministry of Silly Walks

The second design I shared was inspired not only by the every fabulous and entertaining Ministry of Silly Walks, but also by a stencil I designed some years ago to make t-shirts for my Python-loving family. this version can be used for either purpose.

The Ministry of Silly Walks has been such a big part of my family’s lives, my son even played John Cleese’s part in a theater sketch in middle school. Fun times!

Holmes Has A Look
a free pattern to hand embroider

One of the best parts of running a fandom website is getting to indulge in the things I love best! I’m a huge fan of Jeremy Brett in the 1980s version of Sherlock Holmes.

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

This summer, Fandom In Stitches is hosting The Summer of Stitching and encouraging our quilting community to contribute designs in a variety of themes.

First up is Sherlock Holmes, which is what inspired today’s design. The first installment for The Summer of Stitching¬†is June 11, 2014 on Fandom In Stitches, so be sure to stop by!

While I’m not eligible for the prize (it doesn’t make much sense to give it to myself!), I couldn’t resist participating and hope to design at least one new pattern for each theme over the next few months.

you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are

TFiOS Clouds for hand embroidery or applique TFiOS Clouds to paper piece

Left:¬†TFiOS Clouds, 7″ Hand Embroidery or Applique

Right:¬†TFiOS Clouds, 8″ Paper Pieced

While organizing the #TFiOS Design Challenge over on Fandom In Stitches, I could not resist designing a couple of patterns myself.

Ehem.

The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time it was placed into my hot little hands.

As well as being a beautifully written, it is also an extremely quotable book. With that in mind, I created two versions of the same image, both just waiting for Your Words Here.

The design on the above left will work either for applique or for hand embroidery.

The design on the above right is paper pieced, but will also work just fine if you’d like to embroider the clouds after piecing.

And now, a couple of my favorite quotes, grabbed from GoodReads.

‚ÄúAs he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.‚ÄĚ

‚ėÖ

‚ÄúSometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.‚ÄĚ

‚ėÖ

‚ÄúSome people don’t understand the promises they’re making when they make them,” I said.

“Right, of course. But you keep the promise anyway. That’s what love is. Love is keeping the promise anyway.‚ÄĚ

‚ėÖ

‚ÄúThe world is not a wish-granting factory.‚ÄĚ

‚ėÖ

‚ÄúYou are so busy being YOU that you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are.‚ÄĚ

‚Äē¬†John Green,¬†The Fault in Our Stars

‚ėÖ‚ėÖ‚ėÖ

I know, right?

Stitch A Little Happiness

Bluebonnet to Hand Embroider, just $2¬†on¬†Craftsy,¬†7″ x 9 1/2″

This has been the summer of stitching for me. Almost immediately after finishing my last block for the Doctor Who Stitch Along (it posts on Fandom In Stitches next week…so exciting!), I started thinking about what to stitch next. While digging through some old stencils, I found a bluebonnet I designed ages ago and the lightbulb went on! The bluebonnet idea was doubly perfect, because I was also thinking about what to give my mom for her birthday.

Bluebonnet Stencil

This is the original stencil, created for a class I taught several years ago. I’ve never made this stencil available to the public and it seemed perfect for conversion to hand embroidery.

Bluebonnets

Why a bluebonnet? The are the State Flower of Texas. Photo by Shauna.

Bluebonnet Quilt Square

After stitching my bluebonnet in a variety of stitches, I added simple 2 1/2″ ¬†sashing to each side of the white 12 1/2″ square to create a 16 1/2″ block.

The background fabric is Sketch by Timeless Treasure. I have another big project coming in the same fabric soon…Mmmm, can’t wait to share that one! ūüėČ

Bluebonnet PillowThe simple quilt block became a pretty pillow that I gave to my mom for her birthday which is coming up in just a few days (it was an early present!). She lives in a country house and her decor is green and blue, so…perfect! The pillow is shown here in my own squashy chair.

You can stitch my Bluebonnet, too. It’s just $2 on Craftsy!

If you watched this week’s Talk To Me Tuesday, you’ve already seen this little bit of geekery. I thought a close-up photo might be nice to share.

Recently, I stumbled across an awesome set of Star Trek vector graphics by dridgett while looking for something totally different.

Since it’s no secret that I’m a Big Ole Geek, it’s probably no surprise that I thought the symbols would be perfect for stitching! I have a small collection of Star Trek quilt blocks, patterns available on Fandom In Stitches, and I’m thinking this one will add nicely to my growing pile.

Progress Sweet Progress

Embroidery Sampler in Progress

I’ve been working on many decidedly un-crafty things as I gear up for my participation in STITCHED. It’s a very exciting time for me as I’m getting my workshop polished and ready for the site’s unveiling.

In the meantime, I have been doing a tiny bit of handwork while I wait for my kids at various and sundry places. I told you in this post¬†about the linen sampler I’m working on .

Embroidery Sampler in Progress

So many parts of my crafty life flow into my professional life that it gives me just a little extra joy to work on something that is just for me.

Embroidery Sampler in Progress

I’ll show this off a bit more in Talk To Me Tuesday¬†tomorrow.

Add your Sewhooked-related photos to my flickr group and you might be featured in a future post.

Have a wonderful Monday!
