Free Pattern Friday – All Hallow’s Eve

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Back in 2015, I hosted 31 Days of Halloween here on Sewhooked. During that month, I posted 31 different projects, patterns, & recipes.

It was a crazy month of posting, but so, so fun!

This little pattern is one of the only applique pieces I’ve ever designed. (Gasp…applique, me?!)  I love it still and thought it would be fun to share it again today.

All Hallow’s Eve is 7 1/2″.  Don’t want to applique? You can also hand embroider or even stencil this pattern!

31 Days of Halloween – All Hallow’s Eve

31 Days of Halloween on sewhooked.com

We’re back again with another fun and free project for 31 Days of Halloween!

Get ready to hold your breath, because we’re going way outside my comfort zone today!

It’s…

*gasp*

APPLIQUE!

All Hallow's Eve by Jennifer Ofenstein (2)

That’s right, friends, today we’re turning our paper piecing brains towards applique.

You see, many years ago, my hubby and I were on a super tight budget with one toddler and a baby on the way.

In an effort to make our little home festive for Holidays, I would make decorations for our front door out of supplies I had on hand.

All Hallow's Eve 1997

In this case, those supplies included my little sewing machine, black felt and, no kidding, orange denim.

I remember painstakingly sketching a witch on a broom onto felt with a piece of chalk I’d sharped as much as possible.

The result was a not-terrible banner that we used for many, many years.

That was 1997.

As you can see, the banner (above) has seen better days!

Don’t want to applique? You can also hand embroider or even stencil this pattern!

My opinion of the traditional Halloween witch has changed greatly since 1997, so our new friend here is much cuter and definitely curvier. I imagine she’s wearing her Halloween best as she rides her trusty broomstick to a fun party, perhaps in Hogsmeade!

The pattern prints at approximately 7 1/2″. If you want something bigger, try out my tutorial for enlarging/reducing patterns!

Omni Arc for Circles

If you are lucky enough to have an OmniArc Ruler, try using the 8″ circle guide to create your moon.

I ironed my fusible webbing in place first and then folded the orange fabric before cutting with my rotary cutter. Follow the instructions as printed on the ruler.

Your moon will be about 1/2″ bigger than the one in the pattern, but it will still work great for, oh, say a 12″ quilt block or fun Halloween cushion!

No such luck? You can also cut around a ceramic plate with your rotary cutter!

Need fusible web? I recommend Misty-Fuse, Steam-A-Seam 2 or Heat’n Bond Light.

Are you making projects from 31 Days of Halloween? Share your photos with my flickr group! There will be a fun surprise after Halloween for one lucky winner!

Busy Bodies

Broomstick Witch

Potion Maker Fortune Teller

Oopsie Daisy Witch Green Thumb Witch Old Wise Wizard

My journey creating Sunbonnet Sue’s Magical Friends, while frustrating at times, was overall a good experience. I learned a lot about publishing and layout, despite not seeing my book in print.

I’ve had many people suggest that I self-publish the book. It’s something I definitely haven’ t ruled out, but for now, I’m very happy to own my own small pattern company and to continue to share both my for sale designs and  free patterns designed both by myself and my talented Guest Designers on Sewhooked.

This is the last “official” set of Magical Friends, meaning only that these cute little characters are the last of the patterns that would have been part of the book.  Like any other project, there are often tangents that occur that may or may not make the final cut. Those design will be presented as supplemental sets. Those sets were, in my own opinion, not quite obviously magical enough or they have other elements that aren’t very Sunbonnet Sue, or they got away from the basic theme I was following. They’re still fun patterns that I believe captures my my style and enjoyment of the work.

Sunbonnet Sue’s Magical Friends (Set 5) – Busy Bodies includes Broomstick Witch, Fortune Teller, Green Thumb Witch, Old Wise Wizard, Oopsie Daisy Witch and Potion Maker.

Sunbonnet Sue’s Magical Friends are inspired by the classic Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam blocks, with a fun, whimsical twist!

Friendly Familiars

Wizard with Rat

Witch with Owl Wizard with Snake

Wizard with Toad Witch with Cat

There’s just something a little extra magical about a story with animals in it. Perhaps it’s how they seem to perceive our needs and be our friends, without ever being able to verbally communicate. Maybe it’s because they’re cute or maybe, just maybe, it’s because we see something simple and appealing when we look at our cat curled up in a spot of sunshine.
