Ornaments Made by Kids

Some of my favorite, and most abundant ornaments are those made by kids.  We have ornaments made by my kids, by kids I watched after school (something I did almost the entire time my kids were in elementary), some made by children of our friends and even a few made by my sister when she was a kid.

Ornaments Made by Kids

This felt star was part of a fundraising event my daughter’s Girl Scout troop took part in many years ago. Volunteer moms made the stars (myself included!) and the girls stitched the buttons on.

Ornaments Made by Kids

This pipe cleaner snowflake was the craft project from my daughter’s first grade class’ winter party. Remember that comment a few posts ago about my having been a room mom for many years? This was a project I came up with. The kids followed directions beautifully!

Ornaments Made by Kids

I have several stuffed Christmas balls on my tree that were made by my sister when she was around 12 or so. They’re all hand stitched and stuffed with a different fabric on each side.

Ornaments Made by Kids

This little guy is a mouse made by my daughter when she was probably 4 or 5 years old. He’s felt and marker with a couple of popsicle sticks  glued to the back for support.

Ornaments Made by Kids

I saved this one for last. My son had an absolutely wonderful kinder teacher, Mrs. K. She had a variety of these wall hanging designs based on what holiday the children celebrated. She helped the little ones make this very special gift for their parents. The wreath is made of his wee 5 year old hand prints. The holly berries are thumbprints.

We learned just last year that Mrs. K had passed away when we received a Christmas card from her daughter with a very sweet note in it.  Prior to that, we had sent, and received, a card from this most exceptional of ladies every year.

Stop back by every day between now and Christmas as I share crafts and ornaments that are special to me and my family.

Do you have special quilted items just for Christmas? Tell me in comments, I’d love to hear!

Bid for a Treasure!

Vintage Fan Quilt

In a continuing effort to help my kiddo with her college expenses, I’m selling some of my treasures.

One super special treasure is this vintage fan quilt. It’s hand pieced and hand quilted and estimated to have been made in the 1930s. It fell into my hands by chance and I’ve had it on display in my home ever since.

Vintage Fan Quilt

Because I could not decide on an asking price, it’s up for auction on ebay. The minimum bid is the absolute lowest I can take for it.

Bidding ends in just over 2 hours and I would love, love, love this to go to a good home with someone that would appreciate it!

It does have some age damage. If you’re interested, make sure you have a good look at all the photos in the listing before bidding.

Reminder! Pre-registration for Paper Piecing Vintage is now live!

Don’t forget to shop with small businesses and independent artists for the holiday season: Use coupon SHOPSMALL now through Dec. 15 in my Etsy Shop for 15% off your total purchase. Etsy is the only place you can find handmade items by yours truly! 😉

Happy Sunday, everyone!

The leftovers are in the fridge and the countdown to gift giving for many people has begun.

Contessa’s Canoe, a revisit

Contessa’s Canoe, free on Craftsy

Back in August 2010, I shared a pattern named Contessa’s Canoe.

This pattern was designed for, surprise surprise, Contessa, who had a drawing from an old magazine. There was no designer or pattern, just this black and white drawing.

When I originally shared this pattern, it was uncolored and had no seam allowance.

See the original post

See the 7″ uncolored pattern

Seriously, I know, I never do that!

Earlier this weekend, Fav Quilts shared the original Contessa’s Canoe (above, pieced by Shae) on Pinterest.

And then this happened: I woke up this morning to several messages letting me know the pattern link in the original post was broken.

Oops!

You see, this pattern existed before my blog and website were one in the same . I’ve spent oodles of time updating Sewhooked to try to ensure that all my pages are up to date, but with almost a thousand posts, occasionally one pops up that has a broken link or two.

I am sorry about that!

As I was correcting the links and contacting those people looking for the pattern, I decided it was time for an update.

When inspiration hits, I like to go with it, so I opened EQ7 and got to work! One of the best parts of designing in a software intended for quilts is being able to simply and quickly see what the blocks will look like in a variety of colors and fabrics.

Aren’t these just lovely?!

Get the new 6″ version of Contessa’s Canoe right here on Sewhooked

or download it from CraftsyBoth are free!

And of course, while I was at it I had to create some EQ7 quilt mock-ups!

It seems I almost always have a quilt done in all blues. Favorite color? Why yes, it is!

Contessa's Canoe - 2013 Update

Wouldn’t this make a beautiful baby blanket if made with 12″ blocks?

Contessa's Canoe - 2013 UpdateTis the season, in red & green! I love how lacy and floaty this looks.

Reminder! During November 2013, I will donate $1 from EVERY sale of the Mustachio! pattern set to Movember!

Don’t forget about the free classes I told you about last time on Craftsy. They are STILL free today!

If you make Contessa’s Canoe (or any other pattern, tutorial, etc. from Sewhooked!), please share it with the Sewhooked flickr group for a chance to see your project right here!

Remember Movember!

Mustachio! (12 mustaches to paper piece) on Craftsy

Woo-hoo, you know you need some facial hair!

This is a gentle reminder that this month, November 2013, I will donate $1 from EVERY sale of the Mustachio! pattern set to Movember!

What this heck is Movember, you ask? This is from the official website:

As an official global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches on men’s faces around the world. Through the power of the Mo, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

It’s easy…just click on the image above or the link at the end of this sentence and go straight to the Mustachio pattern on Craftsy!

December 1, I’ll donate to Movember. You’ll have your mustaches and will have helped a good cause, too!

Don’t forget about the free classes I told you about last time on Craftsy. They are STILL free today!

Have a fantabulous, quilty weekend!

Oh, lookie, free classes!

Please allow me to shout a bit about Craftsy here!

Craftsy Logo

There are two Craftsy classes that are FREE, today, right now that you guys have got to know about!

Like I said, these are FREE. All you need is a Craftsy account (also free!). Once you’ve got an account (and you can sign up using Facebook or by setting up a new account…sooooo easy!), just click on the links below and then “enroll” and the class is yours to watch anytime you want!

Seriously, how cool is that?!

The first (FREE!) class is Piece, Patch, Quilt: Basic Quiltmaking Skills. If you are a beginner and have been dying to learn to quilt but don’t have time and/or money to invest in a class, this is the perfect class for you. You learn simply everything you need to make your first quilt from beginning to end. That’s right. Prep, rotary cutting, piecing, the quilt sandwich, tying or piecing all the way to binding. For FREE. Seriously, why not? Even if you’ve done some quilting already, there’s always something to learn! Need I mention FREE again?!

The second class will teach you how to take Professional Family Portraits. How perfect a class is this for this time of year? ou will learn to wow everyone with professional quality pictures. I’ve already enrolled and plan to take full advantage of what this class has to offer. For years now, I’ve taken our family portraits myself with my camera’s timer and a tripod. I’m hoping to learn some new tips that will help make our pictures even more awesome! I’m especially excited because the instructor is Kirk Tuck, a commercial photographer based in Austin, Texas, which is where I live, too!

Go, sign up! Even if you don’t use them today, you never know when you might like to give them a whirl. If you’ve been thinking about trying an online class, trying a free class is definitely a good way to start. 🙂

AmysCreativeSide

Today is the LAST day to vote for your favorite quilts during the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! You’ll find my entries under Wall Hangings and Bed Quilts.

Anyway, that’s enough for me today! I just couldn’t let you miss these AWESOME FREE classes.

How’s this for soon?!

I originally designed this fun piece for a magazine. They passed on the pattern and it’s been collecting dust in my sewing room ever since.

Tis the season for Trick-or-Treat and what better way to decorate than a fun table runner?

Some Real Things

In an effort to 1) clean out my overflowing sample bins and 2) help my kiddo pay for her college expenses, I’m doing something I rarely do.

I’m selling stuff I made.

Patterns? Sure, I sell those all the time, and nothing gives me more pleasure than being able to share those with you.

There’s something just a little different about selling projects that I worked on with my hot little hands. Everything I work on evokes memories and feels like a little piece of me.

My kiddo is worth it and I have far more samples than I will ever, ever need. Most of these things are one of a kind and the grand majority of them were for The Book That Wasn’t. It feels good to share them with you and move on to new things!

These are the first few goodies I’ve got up for offer:

Tooth Fairy Door Hanger

Tooth Fairy Door Hanger

Dollar included…because why not?! I came up with this idea after the Tooth Fairy was constantly misplacing the pillow each of my kiddos used to put their lost teeth in.

Garden Fairy Tote

Garden Fairy Tote Bag

I seriously love this bag…click through to see the inside and back. Inspired by fairies…and fabric!

Saturday Morning Monster Movie Wall Hanging

Saturday Morning Monster Movie Wall Hanging

A combination of Monster Madness and Classic Films…love this piece. As a kid, I loved watching black and white monster movies on Saturday morninings.

Three Witches Log Cabin Table Runner

Three Witches Log Cabin Table Runner

If Mrs. Weasley was going to have a table runner…

Sweet Skating Sue

Sweet Skating Sue Wall Hanging

She really is sweet…I loved quilting her, too!

Finished projects not for you? The block patterns used in these projects are available here.

Reminder: ALL Sewhooked printed patterns are 1/2 price on ETSY (no coupon needed) and will be gone after September 30.

Have you made any of my patterns? I’d love to see them! Share a link or better yet, add them to the Sewhooked flickr group!

Back to work for me! Have a fabulous rest of your day!
