Counting Down To Harry, Friday

Counting Down To Harry, Friday

This is it, the shirt I’m wearing to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2 tonight with my family. I have had a fantastic time sharing my Harry Potter tee collection with you all and I can’t wait to see the movie this evening. I will be there, with all Houses represented, as Hogwarts comes together to save the wizarding world.

This tee doesn’t have a story yet. I purchased it recently from Threadless after being on the waiting list for a reprint for ages. It’s soft and perfect and I love it. I hope it’s ready to catch the tears that are sure to fall as we proceed into the final battle.

For those of you that made it to the midnight movie…I hope you had an amazing ride. For Harry Potter fans everywhere…I’m with you, whatever happens.

Hogwarts Crest Tee, purchased late 2000 or early 2001

Talk to Me Tuesday watchers will be familiar with this wall. That’s me and my bad self standing on a table. That’s also the infamous ticking clock that can be heard in many of my videos. The time? Just a little bit earlier today. The lanyards are from Lumos and Phoenix Rising, and you can see a  wee bit of a cross-stitch from the fabulous Shae.

This Hogwarts tee is the first Harry Potter item other than a book that I ever purchased. My family and I were fans from the fall of 2000 on.  I’d recently heard that the first book was going to be made into a movie. It never occurred to me that there would be Harry merchandise. Yeah, duh, I know, but I just wasn’t thinking in that direction. Then, one day, we walked into a store (I think it was a now-defunct WB shop) and there was one Hogwarts tee left on the rack. Just the one. It’s actually a child’s XL tee, but I did not care. There weren’t any adult sizes, or any other sizes to be had. This was it…and it was mine.

I wore this shirt to opening night of the first four movies, along with my hand-crafted HP earrings, towing my kids along in the costumes of their choice. Wearing this tee, I watched Harry discover that he is, indeed, a wizard, saw he and Ron crash into a very angry tree, saw Harry and Hermione rescue Sirius, and watched Cedric Diggory die. I broke this shirt out once again for Deathly Hallows part 1, and once again, inundated it with my tears. You know when and you know why.

Could I have known in 2000 what this fandom or this journey would mean in my life and the life of my family? No…I could have never dreamed of such a thing.

Because I was not able to get tickets to the midnight release at my favorite theater, my family and I will be going to see DH2 tomorrow instead. In some ways, I hate to miss going to the midnight show when so many of the people I know will be snuggling down with with tissues across the country. The anticipation, the caffeine, the solidarity are all reasons to go to the midnight show and reminds me very much of a conference-like atmosphere. Everyone is there for the same reason and we all know it.

Even so, I’m also okay with waiting just a little longer. I’ll be with my family for the final movie, and that’s just as it should be.

Since I’m not seeing the movie tonight, tomorrow will be the last day of my t-shirt countdown and I will share with you the shirt that I’m wearing to the final battle. It’s been a blast revisiting some of my favorite Harry Potter shirts, many of which are now retired. It’s the end of an era for the fandom, but I have no doubt, that we, the fans, will continue to carry Hogwarts in our hearts.

Whether it’s by page or screen, Hogwarts will always welcome you home.

Phoenix Rising Conference Tee, 2007

It has come to my attention that I bred earworms among many of my readers yesterday. Yes, yes, Save Ginny Weasley can definitely do that to you!!

Today’s shirt is very special to me. I didn’t stencil it. I didn’t reconstruct it. It came as-is and it’s perfect.

This is my conference tee from Phoenix Rising, held in New Orleans, Louisiana in May 2007. It was the last Harry Potter conference I attended. It occurred just two months before Deathly Hallows was released. There was something palpable in the air, a very “this is it” sort of feeling. It was the last mass gathering of hard-core Harry Potter fans that I attended. It’s the conference where I met, in real life, many of my online friends. It’s was also the debut of my Harry Potter quilt, My Magical Lens.

We had crafty meet-ups.

Buttons for Phoenix Rising

I gave away hundreds of buttons, as well as providing buttons for a number of podcasts.

We drank hurricanes and listened to Wrock. My BookCrossing group (now defuct), book-bombed all the common areas with free books. There were costumes, and characters and theorizing, and asking, repeatedly, urgently, Is Snape good or evil?

Jewels, Stephanie, Jennifer and Petra
We went to a ball and got to be Cinderella, or Ginny, or Hermione…or Fawkes for a night.

This is the shirt I pull out when I’m feeling nostalgic for that all-too-short weekend. My sister and my best friend were there. There were friends from all over the world, all in the same hotel, breathing the same air. That conference was special, it hummed the feelings we were all having building up to the release of the final book, the one that would close our canon. For many of us, it was the first and the last time we got to see each other, to occupy the same space. Hopefully, very hopefully, it won’t be the last.

Yeah, a shirt really can make me feel all that.

Save Ginny, purchased at a live H&tP show during Lumos, Las Vegas, 2006

I’m not sure when I first discovered Wizard Rock, but it was probably some time in 2005.

I had heard a whisper, a whisper about Harry & the Potters. Back in 2005, Facebook wasn’t the thing, MySpace was. So I went there, and I looked, and I found them.

They’re not the best vocalists in the world, but I love their lyrics and I love their heart. They’re fans and they get it.

The first opportunity I had to see Harry & the Potters perform was at Lumos in 2006. I bought this shirt without a second thought and I have worn it until the threads are starting to come out. It’s one of my favorite H&tP songs…and one of my favorite fandom tees.

We’ve got to save Ginny Weasley from the basilisk

We’ve got to save the school from that unseen horror

We’ve got to save Ginny Weasley from the basilisk

We’ve got to save the school again

Since the early days of Wizard Rock, about a million other bands have come on the fandom scene. My heart still belongs to Harry & the Potters…and I admit it, a little of it belongs to Draco and the Malfoys.

What?! Every girl has a little touch of poison. Click for a listen. 😉
