Busy Bee!

It’s been crazy cakes around my house this week!

My high schooler is back to school, doing what 16 year olds do and my college freshman hit the road and is now back in the dorm, ready for her second semester as a college woman. How did my kids get so grown up? This is a mystery I will never solve!

Paper Piecing Vintage has been amazing so far, with lots of beautiful blocks and fantastic participation in the facebook group.

The crazy mistake I found during this week’s Talk To Me Tuesday has now been rectified. Whew! Now I just need backing fabric to finish up this little quilt of orphan blocks for The Linus Connection.

As You Wish, the Princess Bride quilt and stitch along that I’m organizing on behalf of Fandom In Stitches, starts next Wednesday and has been keeping me busy every minute in between!

Quilting is my job and my hobby, what can I say?!

Doctor Who Bed Quilt, 2013

Welcome to my second post for Amy’s Creative Side’s twice-annual Blogger’s Quilt Festival, this time in the Bed Quilt category.

Yeah, that’s right, I’m posting twice…Bloggers can enter two categories this year and my 2013 has been very quilty!

There are a couple of themes going on my BQF posts. 1) Fandom! Fandom! Fandom! and 2) Quilts made for people I love.

If you read my previous post, then you know I made an Agatha Christie wall hanging for my best friend’s birthday. This post is all about the Doctor Who quilt I made earlier this year for my daughter’s first dorm room.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, my other quilting site, Fandom In Stitches, hosted a Doctor Who Stitch Along. Myself, along with an number of other talented designers, presented 12 free hand embroidered designs depicting the first 11 Doctors plus the TARDIS.

For my own project, I created a unique layout that would ultimately make a quilt large enough for my daughter to use while living away from home.

She’s a freshman this fall, and it was especially important to me to create a quilt that was meaningful to her.

The eleven Doctors and the TARDIS are surrounded by faux mitered blocks with an army of paper pieced Daleks marching around the border. (Free Dalek pattern).

The Doctors are hand embroidered using DMC on Moda Marble Dots.

The entire quilt was free-motion quilted by me on my Baby Lock Quest Plus.

Above, you can see the quilt on her first-ever dorm bed! I made the quilt at the foot of the bed, too. It’s also something she loves…InuYasha!

She texted this photo to me, and I still tear up a bit when I think of her wrapped in quilts I made. 🙂

While organizing the #TFiOS Design Challenge over on Fandom In Stitches, I could not resist designing a couple of patterns myself.

Ehem.

The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time it was placed into my hot little hands.

As well as being a beautifully written, it is also an extremely quotable book. With that in mind, I created two versions of the same image, both just waiting for Your Words Here.

The design on the above left will work either for applique or for hand embroidery.

The design on the above right is paper pieced, but will also work just fine if you’d like to embroider the clouds after piecing.

And now, a couple of my favorite quotes, grabbed from GoodReads.

Are you tired of hearing about the Doctor Who quilt?

This is it, I promise, the LAST post about it!

Despite talking about it in countless TTMT videos, I just had to share one more post in photos. There’s just something about a good picture, don’t you think?

Here she is, the finished quilt with all 11 Doctors plus the TARDIS.

I know, I know, even I’m blown away by this quilt!

How about a close up of the quilting? I free motion quilted it on my Baby Lock Quest Plus. The whole thing. On a home sewing machine. Yes, I did!

My quilting isn’t perfect, but it makes my daughter happy, and since this is her quilt, I’m happy, too!

*sigh*

I just LOVE the geometry. LOVE IT>

The lovely label made using Jessica Blacknall’s “50 Years” pattern with the names of the Doctor Who Stitch Along Designers added in the space.

And, because it had to be done, a giant TARDIS pillow to go with it.

And then there was that summer that I spent every free moment stitching something related to Doctor Who with other designers and loads of a DW fans.

It. Was. Awesome.

The Doctor Who Stitch Along on Fandom In Stitches has officially concluded. Myself and six other designers presented 12 free hand embroidered designs over 12 weeks.

I cannot tell you how much sheer joy I get out of events like this. For me, fandom means community and a Stitch Along is a great way to bring fans (and stitchers!) together!

Today, we added Bonus Blocks by the original SAL designers as well as oodles of great designs as part of the Doctor Who Stitch Along Design Invitational, all from FiS readers!

Below are my own extra offerings (and one I stitched from Aalia!) as well as my DWSAL blocks.

Time And Relative Dimension In Space

Time And Relative Dimension In Space. Had to be done! This will be a cornerstone for my DW quilt. I think it’s my favorite of the smaller designs.

Alternative Tenth Doctor

This alternative version was my original Ten pattern and the one that started the idea for the SAL. After drafting and stitching him up, I decided this style wasn’t quite what I was going for, so I started over and created the Tenth Doctor seen in the SAL (he’s below with the other Doctors!). He will most likely end up as a cushion cover to coordinate with the DW quilt I’m making for my daughter.

I’m The Doctor & Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey

I’m the Doctor and Wibbley Wobbley Timey Wimey are two more cornerstones for my DW quilt.

Trust Me, designed by Aalia Zaman. You can find this on Page 1 of her Doctor Who quotes! This is the final cornerstone for my DW quilt.

Bow ties are cool

Because they are. And I couldn’t resist. I’m particularly pleased with how the bow tie came out.

11th Doctor TARDIS Logo

Since I digitized the 11th Doctor’s logo for the Time and Relative Dimension in Space design, I thought I should share it on it’s own for anyone that might like it. It’s 7 1/2″, so it could be used with the SAL blocks if desired.

10″ TARDIS

So, during all the Who-insanity, two things happened (just, two?!).

One, my daughter asked for an army of Daleks around her quilt. They’re in progress (below), from an updated version of a pattern I designed several years ago. While work on the first couple of the little killing machines, I kept thinking about paper piecing a TARDIS large enough for a cushion. It stuck in my head. And then, of course, I realized that if I made not just the block, but the actual pattern larger, I could get lots of details in. Hmmm…. I’ve designed two paper pieced TARDIS patterns in the past (see them here) and while I do like those, I’ve always wanted more detail. So, I sat down and drew the 10″ TARDIS. It is exactly what it sounds like. I might even stitch “Police Public Call Box” after I piece it…which is AFTER I finish the Dalek Army!

The Ninth Doctor, designed by Aalia Zaman, stitched by me!

As the saying goes, you never forget your first doctor.

The Ninth Doctor was my first Doctor. I knew nothing, absolutely NOTHING about Doctor Who. My hubby has been a fan since he was a kid. He remembers back many, many Doctors. I was a newbie. And then came Nine. I’ve been hooked ever since!

The Ninth Doctor was designed for the Doctor Who Stitch Along over on Fandom In Stitches by the very talented stitching guru, Aalia Zaman. I love how she captures his personality with just a few stitches. Truly fantastic!
