Free Pattern Friday – Sitting Hen

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I’m still in the mood for Spring, so I thought we’d continue with that theme and share a fun, sweet pattern designed as a Mother’s Day freebie some years ago.

Sitting Hen is 5″ paper pieced, and can be easily enlarged using this tutorial.

Free Pattern Friday – Peace Fingers

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Thank you all for your encouragement and thoughts about my new Patreon page! I quite honestly could not do this without you. ♥

And now…our free pattern!

my hand.JPG

Inspired by my round up of hand patterns a few weeks ago, I have officially checked a pattern off of the list of things I want to create: a hand making a peace sign.

I hope you enjoy this free 10″ paper pieced pattern designed using my very own left hand for inspiration. Tested for you by Amanda, @muchoxoxo on Instagram.

Patreon!

This is a little long, so please bear with me.

I LOVE TO SHARE:  my once a week crafty show & tell via Talk to Me Tuesday, free patterns here on Sewhooked or over on Fandom in Stitches, quilting communities on Facebook, photos on Instagram, quilt-alongs. giveaways, swaps.

I love it ALL.

Over the years, I’ve tried many ways to keep my patterns low cost and to make them as easy as possible to share with you all while still providing an income for me. I’ve published printed patterns, sold to quilt stores, sold patterns to magazines, published online both individually and through various digital media, and I’ve participated in all kinds of events.

After more than a decade of self-publishing, I am currently barely making enough to cover the costs of creating my patterns.

The funny thing is that this hasn’t discouraged me at all. I love doing all these things and I don’t want to stop. I know you all enjoy my work because you tell me with your emails and comments and you show me with the photos of the projects you’ve created from my patterns, both free and purchased. I feel your love every time I post a new video or pattern. You are my online family!

With that in mind, I’m going to try something completely different.

Patreon.

If you’re a fan of YouTubers, PodCasters, or other online creators, then Patreon probably isn’t going to be news to you. For those of you who don’t know what it is, Patreon allows fans of internet creators like myself to support their work directly by becoming their Patrons. You’ll find YouTubers, podcasters, artists, musicians, and more on Patreon.

And now, you’ll find a quilter

pa·tron
/pātrən/
noun
1. a person who gives financial or other support to a person, organization, cause, or activity.

I’ve joined Patreon as a creator with the goal of eventually being able to share all of my new content for free.

Yeah, free. That means patterns, too, and not just on Friday, but always.

How can you help make this happen? For as little as $1 per month, you can help support me as I dip my toe into uncharted territory. Over the course of an entire year, that’s the price of purchasing a single yard of quilt store quality fabric or a single quilt pattern.

Do you have to? Absolutely not. Sometimes, a dollar a month is too much to ask. Any of the content that I release for free will be free to everyone, just as it has been in all the years I’ve been sharing.

If this little experiment works out, my plan is to host an absolutely free quilt along right here on Sewhooked during the second half of 2017. This QAL will include an entirely new quilt design by me. It’s fun and versatile and, in my own opinion, not like anything I’ve done before. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Have experience with Patreon? Suggestions? Ideas? Leave them in comments!

Free Pattern Friday – Spring!

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

In 2015, I participated in the EQ7 Row Along hosted by Marianne of Seams To Be Sew. Rows were created by a variety of designers to represent each of the four seasons.

EQ7 Seasons RAL - Spring Row by Jennifer Ofenstein

My row was Spring-themed! For me, that means new life: baby chicks, grass growing, and flowers popping to life.

See my original Row Along post here.

Well, as you probably know by now, I love block sets. Most of my events start with a block set. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to share mix & match blocks to use for a row or for anything else the quilter might like. Each block is 6″ finished.

Free Pattern Friday – 16% Irish

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back again for Free Pattern Friday!

Let’s get a little bit personal.

For my birthday last year, I ordered a DNA kit from Ancestry. I’ve dabbled in genealogy off and on for years and I grew up hearing family stories, but there wasn’t much about where our family immigrated from before landing in Texas. I had always been curious, so DNA!

As it turns out, my ancestors were Very British, and Little Bit Irish, with a dash of Scandinavian.

Do you think they make a “Kiss Me, I’m 16% Irish” tees?

Today, in honor of my 16%, and of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 (a week from today), I have two Ireland-inspired free patterns to share.

Enjoy! ☘

irish flag 2017

A 6″ x 8″ pattern to paper piece, this little flag is SUPER fast and easy. It would also work for a variety of other flags by simply switching out the colors as needed.

Check out this Flags of the World Factbook from the CIA. Seriously.

Shamrock 2017

Whatever you call it, this shape is kind of everywhere and on everything during March. I have found one four leaf clover in my life. Also, I kind of love the word Shamrock. It’s a good word! 5″ paper pieced.

Also, BUNNIES.

Self-Trimming Tissue Cover TUTORIAL

Tissue Tutorial 2017 03 for sewhooked - TITLE.jpg

As promised several Talk to Me Tuesdays ago, we have a super simple tutorial to make a self-trimmed tissue packet cover.

Don’t want trim? I have instructions for that, too!

Please note that this tissue cover is sized to fit Kleenex Facial Tissues. Mine are a generic version but are the same size as the Kleenex. Use the brand works for you.

Adjust the dimensions if needed. You can also play with quilt blocks and directional fabric as desired.

These little packets make great gifts, swap additions, and are perfect for keeping your tissues clean and safe in your bag or purse.

finished (1).JPG
First up! Self-Trimming Tissue Cover…

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-1

You’ll need fabric in two colors. I’m using contrasting colors to make the lining and outside very obvious. For both the trimmed and non-trimmed version, the outside will be orange.

For TRIMMED Cover:

  • Lining/Trim – 5 3/4″ x 8 1/2″
  • Outside – 5 3/4″ x 6 1/2″
tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-2

With right sides together, line one end of OUTSIDE to one end of LINING/TRIM on the side that measures 5 3/4″.

Stitch a 1/4″ seam with backstitching at both ends.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-3

Line up opposite ends and repeat the 1/4″ seam with backstitching along the other 5 3/4″ side.

Tissue Tutorial 2017 03 for sewhooked (4).JPG

Turn so that wrong sides of the fabric are together. Adjust so that each end of TRIM is approximately the same size.

Press.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-5

Using a ruler or rotary mat, fold right sides of the OUTSIDE together so that it is 3″ wide. If you’re using a rotary mat, you can align easily use the markings on your mat for this part. Edges should overlap in the approximate center.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-6

Once adjustments have been made to your liking and the width is 3″, pin or clip with sewing clips. Wonder Clips or Magic Clips work great. (I have both.)

Because this version has TRIM, you will not see the overturned edge during this step.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-7

Sew each end with a 1/4″ seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-8

Clip corners & turn.

finished (1).JPG

Done!

See how the Lining/Trim makes a lovely accent? You can have fun playing with stripes, dots or other fun fabrics.

finished-2

Now, let’s make one that isn’t trimmed. We’ll use the same technique, but the fabric sizes will be reversed.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-10

You’ll need fabric in two colors. Just as before, the orange fabric is the OUTSIDE.

For UN-TRIMMED Cover:

  • Outside – 5 3/4″ x 8 1/2″
  • Lining – 5 3/4″ x 6 1/2″
tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-11

With right sides together, line one end of LINING to one end of OUTSIDE on the side that measures 5 3/4″.

Stitch a 1/4″ seam with backstitching at both ends.

tissue-tutorial-2017-03-for-sewhooked-12

Line up opposite ends and repeat the 1/4″ seam with backstitching along the other 5 3/4″ side.

Turn so that wrong sides of the fabric are together. Adjust so that each end is approximately the same width.

Press.

Because this version doesn’t have TRIM, you’ll see the overturned edge during this step.

Free Pattern Friday – Let Me Give You a Hand!

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back for a BIG Free Pattern Friday.

Today I’m sharing several patterns in a theme!

If you’ve ever met me in “real life” or watched my Talk to Me Tuesday videos, you’ll know that I express myself with my hands. I’ve been known to accidentally smack unsuspecting passers by with my exuberant communications. Oops!

Last week, a request took my fancy (something that doesn’t happen very often) and I decided to give it a try. The result is a new hand-themed design, but it certainly isn’t my first!

I also have a guest designer this week, fellow Talk to Me Tuesdayer and Fandom in Stitches Designer, Vanda Chittenden!

First up is this 5″ paper pieced Hand. It’s a fairly simple design with a very simple name. I’ve seen it adapted for many, many quilts, including some fun fandom-themed ones! Somewhere out there is a four-fingered version that was added to a Lord of the Rings quilt. If you anyone knows where I can find that photo, please leave the link in comments. 😛

Like most things fandom, I LOVE Star Trek. I asked Vanda Chittenden if I could share this awesome  10″ pattern today because it just makes sense to include it in a post all about hands! Find it on Fandom in Stitches under Star Trek, on Vanda’s website, Quilt in Piece, or go directly to the pattern with the link below.

Last but not least, is one of my own patterns from Fandom in Stitches, the Hand of Glory. Adapted as an option for my Harry Potter Bookcase Quilt, The Project of Doom, this is a 5″ pattern to paper piece.

Free Pattern Friday – Giraffe

free-pattern-friday

Hello, friends! Welcome once again to Free Pattern Friday!

It’s been a fun month of sharing free patterns and I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.

Today I’m sharing a pattern I designed for a friend ages ago. This was one of the first paper pieced patterns I incorporated embroidery into. See those tiny horns and the eye? French knots! You can also use a dot of fabric paint or marker if you’re not a fan of embroidery.

Pattern finishes 5″ or can be enlarged using Adobe Reader.
