Free Pattern Friday – What We Do In The Shadows

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Big thanks to my Ko-Fi supporters for your support of this free content. ♥

In my last Talk to Me Tuesday video, I shared that I have designed new patterns inspired by the What We Do in the Shadows FX TV show. Movie-inspired patterns are in progress.

What could be more Halloween than a vampire-themed “reality” show?! (Please note that this is a mature-themed show and is not for kiddos!)

Below you’ll find my first three What We Do In The Shadows inspired patterns to paper piece, free for your personal and non-profit use. I plan to share three new patterns each Friday this month, with optional quilt finishing instructions before Halloween!

Find these patterns and more by myself and other

wonderful designers over on Fandom in Stitches!

Free Pattern Friday – Runic Alphabet!

Welcome back to a long overdue Free Pattern Friday!

My Ko-Fi supporters have been so generous in recent months, that you have paid for a year of sewhooked.com! If that’s not worth a new free pattern, I don’t know what is!

This week, I share my Runic Alphabet, designed way back in 2010. This pattern was available in my pattern shop for 9 years, retired in 2019. Now it’s yours for free for personal & non-profit use!

I will also be sharing this pattern over on Fandom in Stitches. What Fandoms can you think of that include runes? The Lord of the Rings immediately comes to mind, but there must be many, many more! Leave your thoughts in the comments and I’ll make sure to include that in my Fandom in Stitches post!

Free Pattern Friday: Quirky QWERTY Alphabet!

As you all know, I retired from selling my patterns in 2019. A lot of patterns were retired with me. I didn’t want to just dump them into the world just in case I wanted to do something with them someday.

Well, after lots of deliberation, I’m pleased to present one of my all-time most popular previously for-sale patterns, Quirky QWERTY Alphabet, a set of 56 easy-to-piece paper pieced patterns for a very special Free Pattern Friday!

I first shared this chunky funky alphabet back in 2015. Since then, I’ve seen these letters used in many wonderful, beautiful quilts, including several at 2020 QuiltCon here in Austin, Texas!

All I ask in return is that you use this pattern set for good. Create a positive message or a one-of-a-kind item for someone with an unusual name. Please don’t make items to sell for profit but DEFINITELY make items to make the world a better place!

Where did my retired patterns go? Read all about that here.

Free Pattern Friday: Bicycle (comes out of retirement!)

Well, friends, with the spring weather and lots of people outside, I thought it was a good time to bring my Bicycle pattern out of retirement!

Where did my retired patterns go? Read all about that here.

This formerly-for-sale pattern is 6″ or 10″, both sizes are paper pieced. It’s been made many times over the years, and it’s always been one of my favorites. It’s now free for you to make and I genuinely hope you enjoy it!

Free Pattern Friday: Fairy 2023, or, Evolution of a Fairy

I could have called this Evolution of a Fairy.

Let me explain.

I designed my first foundation paper pieced pattern back in 2005. During that first year or two, I attempted a fairy pattern. She was a little complicated, but I didn’t know what I didn’t know, and complicated has never really stopped me anyway.

Well, as you can see, she doesn’t look great. What is even happening with that arm? 😐

While I don’t remember making the block, my much more experienced eye can see all the design mistakes as well as where my seam ripper and I spent some quality time together. I still rip seams, but I’m much better at it now. Practice, after all, makes perfect.

Fast forward a few years later, and I had another go.

She’s definitely better, but she’s still not quite right. A couple of friends tested her for me, and I was reasonably happy with this pattern, at least enough to share on an earlier version of this website.

Fast forward to 2015, and I redrafted her yet again. I was working on the reboot of The Project of Doom at the time, running my pattern company, I had a kid at home, was volunteering with the high school, and honestly, I have no idea what else. With everything else going on, I think I just forgot about her.

See my retired patterns here.

Until last week. While I was organizing some files, there she was. Just waiting for some finishing touches.

I’m pleased to present Fairy, 2023. Much like me, she had no idea where she’d be today!

You can see the bones of the original design in this pattern, but she’s more, well, airborne. More defined. And definitely more 2023.

I hope you like her!

Free Pattern Friday: String Pieced Picnic

Hello, dear friends!

It’s been a long while since our last Free Pattern Friday and I am delighted to have something new to share!

hugs title

My last non-fandom freebie was Virtual Hugs back in March 2020. I’m sure no explanation is needed. You can find it, and many more free patterns here.

String Pieced Picnic is based on an old photo I discovered in January while digitizing my photo collection. The quilt shown was made by one of my great-grandmothers. My version is not an identical replica but is close enough that I know, and now, you know!

Say hello to String Pieced Picnic, named by YouTube viewer Julie T (thank you, Julie!)

My quilt top is complete, but I won’t be able to quilt it just yet as I’m waiting to be cleared for normal activity after foot surgery back in December.

My quilt back is also pieced and ready to go. I plundered my collection of whites + brights, including some fun fat quarters from trips and gifts from friends to make a wild and crazy patchwork back! I hope to have this on my frame very soon!

Now, I’m sharing String Pieced Picnic for free so you have the chance to make your own heirloom-inspired picnic quilt! The design is very versatile and can be string pieced with or without foundation or it can be foundation paper pieced for a more precise design. Instructions for both are included.

As shown, the quilt is 83” x 83” but the size can easily be increased or decreased as desired. I’d love to see what size you make!

I hope you enjoy String Pieced Picnic. If you make it, feel free to share! You can find me at sewhooked.com and on Instagram & YouTube as @sewhookedjen. Looking for community support or just want to share your work in progress? Join the Sewhooked Facebook group!

A note about previously for sale patterns: I’ve recently had a lot of requests for patterns formerly in my pattern shop. I retired from selling quilt patterns on December 31, 2019. If you would still like one of my retired patterns, I will offer it in return for a small donation to a food bank, non-profit, or other similar charity in your area. Volunteering your time, of course, counts! Email your receipt to me or send a photo of yourself donating or volunteering (for me only, I won’t publish or) and I’ll gladly send the pattern. One pattern per donation.

TTMT #638 – Sunshine & Whales

In which I share a gift made for a friend.

Happy 15th birthday to my daughter’s cat, Marie! She’s been part of our family since my daughter was in middle school & Marie was a kitten!

I apologize for the crazy lighting from the video filmed today. I didn’t realize how the shifting clouds were affecting the lighting until after I’d recorded. Fortunately, it’s a short one!

TTMT #612 – Snow Day(s)

Update…I did venture out and make the round trip to rescue my daughter, her boyfriend, and Marie cat. They live VERY close, so even driving super slow and carefully, I wasn’t out very long. It is a huge relief to have them all safe and warm at home with us. ♥

Halloween Round-up!

Hello, my dear friends!

I haven’t shared anything aside from Talk To Me Tuesday since having surgery, and since it is October, my favorite month, I couldn’t resist doing a roundup of my own Halloween and fall patterns and tutorials!

I’ve included both Free Patterns & Retired shop patterns below. As a compromise for those who want access to my previously for sale patterns, I will share the pattern of your choice for a small donation to a local-to-you non-profit. More info below with the Retired Patterns.

To date, wonderful quilters have donated over $300 to a wide variety of charities, donated food, clothing, and hundreds of masks to those who need them. Your charitable efforts make my heart swell with happiness and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

What are your favorite things to make for Halloween? I’d love to see! Let me know in comments or share over in the Sewhooked Facebook Group! You can also tag me on Instagram – @sewhookedjen.

RETIRED SHOP PATTERNS

I retired my online quilt pattern shop December 31, 2019 but I still receive quite a few requests for retired patterns.I decided the best way to address that was to have those interested in a retired pattern make a small donation to a local-to-you non-profit of your choice. Email your receipt and I’ll be happy to send the pattern. Please, only one pattern per receipt.

If you’re unsure if a pattern is FREE (I have loads of those, check out the main menu on sewhooked.com), or RETIRED, just drop me an email or comment and I’ll let you know.
