Free Pattern Friday – Sweet Reflections Quilt

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Years and years ago, I put aside a box of fabrics I’d made from my kid’s clothing to eventually make a quilt. This was SO long ago, I wasn’t even a quilter yet.

Flour sack 9 patch

My Grannie had done something similar. She’d cut the fabric scraps from flour sacks and worn out clothing into 2 1/2″ patches (with a template and scissors!) and those would go in a cardboard box to make nine patches (above).

Grannie's Nine Patch

After Grannie passed away, I inherited the treasure box full of nine patches, eventually making the quilt you see here.

sweet patches

My own 2 1/2″ patches are a bit lumpy bumpy, because at some point in the past, long before I was a quilter, I sewed the fabrics together in irregular chunks, with the idea of eventually making a quilt. Instead of picking all those pieces apart, I cut them, as they were, into 2 1/2″ pieces.

It’s all part of the story.

sweet patchwork

Sweet Reflections is a traditionally pieced quilt made from two simple blocks. You’ll get a continuous checkerboard pattern when the two different blocks are used together.

Now, I obviously didn’t invent patchwork quilts. I’m not in any way taking credit for reinventing the wheel, but I do hope you find these simple instructions useful and maybe even inspiring!

This pattern is dedicated to Jennifer Rowles for her accidental reminder on Talk to Me Tuesday that some really special fabrics were waiting for a little love!

I’m planning to make a couple of these blocks per week, in between all of the other crazy things I’m working on. It’s a peaceful, easy to make block and I hope very much that you enjoy it as much as I have!

The blocks are 10″ (10 1/2″ with seam allowance), traditionally pieced. Chain pieced if you like! Make one, or make a whole quilt. Directions to make a 56″ x 66″ quilt included.

I’d love to see how you use Sweet Reflections. Join the Sewhooked Facebook Group for community, support & prizes. It’s a great place to share!

Free Pattern Friday – My Back Pocket

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I mentioned on TTMT a couple of weeks back that I have quite a few doodles from over the winter break.

Sometimes my doodles are elaborate drawings and sometimes they are, well, just doodles!

back pocket doodle

So began today’s freebie! Inspired by the constant presence of my own phone in my back pocket, My Back Pocket is a 10″ (10 1/2″ with seam allowance) pattern to paper piece. It’s super simple and goes together very quickly.

Free Pattern Friday – Birdbath

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Today’s pattern is inspired and dedicated to my lovely friend, Linda B.

On a whim, I'm auditioning a new sparklie in the birdbath. It's a sweet glass ball that @vivaciouswordsmith added to our donate pile. I've got @thelinusconnection emails to respond to, quilts to bind and more orphan blocks to sort, but coffee and breakfas

Linda moved out of state in the autumn. Before she left, she gave me her very lovely birdbath. I think of her every time I see it. ♥

Birdbath is 10″ paper pieced (10 1/2″ with seam allowance). The piecing is simple and it comes together very quickly. I would recommend trimming the beaks and tummies closely to help reduce bulk. This is a good spot to use your Add-An-Eighth Ruler if you have it.

Free Pattern Friday – Winter Mittens

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

It’s good to be back after a break to spend time with family and friends for the holidays and New Year.

I’d like to take a moment to thank all of my Patreon Patrons for helping to keep Free Pattern Friday going. ♥ It’s because of your patronage that I am able to continue offering free patterns. More details below today’s free pattern.

Today’s pattern is inspired by memories of my now-adult kiddos when they were wee little kids wearing mittens. I used to make them myself with a long crochet cord attaching the two mittens that I would then thread through their coat sleeves. When they’d take the mittens off, they’d dangle loosely just below their cuffs. We never lost a single pair!

Winter Mittens are 10″ paper pieced (10 1/2″ with seam allowance) and include an option “string” design to hand embroider.

Free Pattern Friday – Smiling Santa Gift Bag

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I’m doing something a little different today and sharing an updated version of a tutorial I wrote years ago.

Smiling Santa Giftbag was a “Way Back Craft” in 2008, originally created by me for my previous website in 2000.

2000. Wow!

This easy-peasy tutorial that can be completed entirely by hand or with a little sewing machine assistance if you’d like.

I’ve added a face shape template or you can wing the shape for your own unique Santa!
