You will need small amounts of 7 fabric colors as shown.
Use 1/4” seam allowance throughout.

Cut out all pieces as listed on pages 3 & 4.
Tip: Use freezer paper for your pattern pieces OR a small piece of double stick or masking tape on the back of the paper pieces to hold them in place.
Tip: A glue stick works great to hold pieces in place before stitchingin place.
Applique the following in the order listed below using the technique of your choice. All pieces start with left or right body.
wing on top of body
head on top of wing+body
pupil on top of eye (use photos for reference)
eye on top of head (use photos for reference)
Stitch comb right sides together, turn, clip, & add a small amount of stuffing. Stitch closed using a scant 1/4” seam.
Fold beak in half. Stitch one side closed. Clip end, turn, add a small amount of stuffing, stitch closed with a 1/4″ seam.
Layer feet with a piece of batting. Stitch around, cut away excess batting. Details are optional. I used a Frixion pen to mark the foot shape. (affiliate link)
Pin beak & comb in place, stitch.
Stitch gusset to one side of body. Press out, align other side of body to body + gusset. Stitch. Leave a 2” opening to turn.

Earlier this week and as a favor to my BFF, Jewells, I added 10″ versions of two existing free patterns, Sitting Hen and Cat’s Rooster.
I have to say a big thanks to Jewells for giving me a project that I can do while I recover from my ankle sprain! As she said in her TTMT earlier this week, I am NOT good at sitting still!
Find updated versions of both poultry patterns below and on my Free Quilt Pattern page.
Both are paper pieced and both include 5″ and1 10″ finished patterns.
If you make either of these patterns or ANY of my other patterns, please consider sharing over on the Sewhooked Facebook Group! There are some really wonderful, supportive people there. ♥
REMINDER! April is my birthday month and you’re invited to help me celebrate by participating in the 5th Annual Fat Quarter Lotto!
It’s super easy – send up to four fat quarters & I’ll draw a winner (or winners) “live” on Talk to Me Tuesday on April 30, 2019. There will be 1 winner per 50 fat quarters. Last year we had two winners with 50 fat quarters each and one winner with 25 fat quarters!
Want an extra entry? Include orphan blocks for The Linus Connection! The Linus Connection is an Austin, TX-based blanket making charity. I use orphan quilt blocks to make quilts to donate. I also share orphan blocks with fellow volunteers to make quilts. Any orphan quilt blocks collected will be turned into quilts for kids in crisis in Central Texas. This collection is personally done by me, Jennifer Ofenstein, and is not sponsored or endorsed by The Linus Connection.
The Sewhooked Fat Quarter Lotto is not a sponsored event and I am not eligible to win. This is just my way to say Thank You for another fun year of sharing! There is no purchase necessary and no obligation to play. I will pay for all return postage.
I’m still in the mood for Spring, so I thought we’d continue with that theme and share a fun, sweet pattern designed as a Mother’s Day freebie some years ago.
Sitting Hen is 5″ paper pieced, and can be easily enlarged using this tutorial.
Remember the sweet chick from the Spring post a couple of weeks ago? Enlarge Sitting Hen to 10″ (link below) and pair with Pecking Check for this sweet Mini.

A Huge, HUGE thank you goes out to Honey Bee Quilt Store for hosting my first-ever Trunk Show. A very special thank you goes out to my friends that came by to help out and cheer me on, as well as the multitude of visitors that so kindly came by to share part of their day with me!
I can’t say enough good things about all the people I was lucky enough to get to visit with. In the photo above, you see me with blog reader Sarah (wearing an awesome Doctor Who tee!!), who came all the way from Houston! We had a lovely visit and it was wonderful to get to meet her face to face. Thanks for coming, Sarah!
If you came yesterday, THANK YOU. I was nervous and excited and it was a wonderful, wonderful day. Everyone I met was so kind about my work and it was lovely to get to share with so many new faces.
As a special thank you to my readers, helpers and yesterday’s visitors and for all the moms out there on this Mother’s Day, I offer you this sweet pair of free patterns.
Several years ago, I participated in a year-long birthday quilt block swap. At the time, one of my dear friends and fellow designers, Cat Magraith, was collecting chicken-themed blocks. She was also participating in the same swap. I drafted several before deciding which blocks to share with her.
The above pattern, Pecking Chick, never made out of the sketch stage and is being posted for the very first time today! I think he’d be a sweet little chick with a French knot eye and a few seed beads at his feet for pecking!
The first two were made for the swap, and I believe I sent the egg block on to her as well. It’s one block I’m incredibly proud of. Doesn’t it just look like you’re looking in a full nest?
But wait, there’s more! I’m not the only that’s created or adapted chicken patterns. Cat has quite a few of her own, many of which are available right here on Sewhooked for free!
