All that Glitters is FANDOM!

Have you heard the news?

Lilja is hosting Not All Who Wander Are Lost, a Lord of the Rings block of the month and the follow-up to There and Back Again, over on Fandom In Stitches!

There will be a new post the first Friday of every month in 2013 and the very first post when live yesterday!

Lilja rounded up SEVEN talented designers to participate, myself include.

I am absolutely thrilled to watch Fandom In Stitches grow and was more than happy to have such a talented friend and fellow-designer head up this year’s biggest Fandom In Stitches event!

Why are you still here? Go check out FiS for the first three patterns and to see the gorgeous blocks they make!

A Narrow Bridge of Stone Without a Parapet

The Bridge to Rivendell

It’s There and Back Again (TABABOM) new pattern day over on Fandom In Stitches, my website dedicated to free fandom patterns designed by fans, for fans!

This is month 5 of TABABOM, and my first appearance as a designer in this year-long project.

My pattern for this month is The Bridge To Rivendell, inspired by a combination of the bridge described in The Hobbit and the Rivendell bridges shown in the movie version of The Lord of the Rings.

I have worked with designers Michelle Thompson, Lilja Björk Sigurdórsdóttir and Schenley Pilgram to create a block of the month that will journey with Bilbo on his adventure There and Back Again.

I wanted to really try something new with this project and am piecing all of my blocks using Northcott’s Stonehenge fabrics in order to create a stone mural-esque quilt. My thought was that I wanted my quilt to look like a piece of art created by Tolkien’s dwarves.

If you are a fan of any variety, I encourage you to follow Fandom In Stitches. In addition to our current block of the month, we post free patterns regulary, have occasional challenges and giveaways. It’s such a fun site to be part of because, after all, we are all fans of something!

Add your Sewhooked-related photos (that includes my patterns posted to Fandom In Stitches!) to my flickr group and you might be featured in a future post! FiS also has a flickr group, packed with lots of great photos!

Photobucket In November of 2012, I will celebrate my tenth year as a Linus Connection volunteer! I have spent almost all of those years at the Linus webmistress and am now on my second go as a Board Member.

I’m currently in charge of blanket packing and distribution during our monthly meetings, which simply means I make sure each facility gets what they need from the donated blankets we receive. I also write all the blog posts for our group, as well as take care of our Facebook and Twitter pages.

You will hear me talk about “Linus” a lot. When I do, I’m always referring to The Linus Connection of Central Texas, a small non-profit based right here in Austin.

My personal goal is 2 blankets a month, or 24 blankets per year.

***

In 2012, I will continue to collect Stars for Linus (see above!). In 2011, we donated 3 Stars for Linus quilts to The Linus Connection. This year, let’s try to make it 4!

Each quilt block needs to be 12″ (12 1/2″ unfinished) and made in bright colors with a light background.

You can use my free pattern or any star pattern of your choice, including Wonky Stars!

You can find my mailing address on the Stars for Linus pattern. For best results, print without scaling. If your pattern scales down, simply make the borders a little bigger and then square up to 12 1/2″!

We Are The Face of Quilting The Faces of Quilting come in all shapes, sizes, ages and skin tones.

Share your story of quilting on your own blog and post your photo in our flickr group!

Well, I guess that about sums it up! This week I’m planning a look back at 2011 as well as my 12 for 2012 post. I hope you are having a very happy new year!

Don’t forget, now through midnight, get 50% off your total Sewhooked Shop instant download purchase! Use coupon code STITCHEDJAN1 for half-off your entire PDF order!

You mean my secret identity?

As many of you that have followed my blog for any length of time are probably aware, I’m a big ole fangirl. I love Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek and all kinds of other awesomely geeky stuff.

It brings me joy. So I quilt it!

My other reality is called Fandom In Stitches.

I talk about FiS all the time on Talk to Me Tuesday, mainly because it’s just so much fun!

Currently, we’re running a block of the month themed around The Hobbit called There and Back Again. I’m working with three other uber-talented designers,  Michelle Thompson, Lilja Björk Sigurdórsdóttir and Schenley Pilgram to bring free Hobbit-themed patterns to our readers once a month for a year, culminating in a quilt layout that will create a 37″ x 37″ quilt.

Aside from our current BOM, we also post all kinds of other fandomy goodness! I thought it would be fun to do a little update on some of my contributions to Fandom In Stitches so you can see what I get up to in my “other” job!

Potter Puppet Pals Quilt Layout 2
The  Potter Puppet Pals patterns  live on Fandom In Stitches’ Harry Potter Page!
Fandom in Stitches is a huge amount of fun for me, not only because of the obvious appeal of doing anything related to fandom and fun, but because I get to work with almost 20 other talented designers, all sharing their talent for free.
One of the things we all share in is the Request page. This gives the designers the opportunity to see what kind of patterns our readers are looking for.
Many of us use this as inspiration for new patterns!

I also enjoy writing for FiS, and while it’s a challenge to keep up with, it’s well worth the effort when we, the designers, see projects being made from our patterns.

Probably the most fun for me is getting to stretch myself creatively doing what I love best and in a way that is both fun and recognizable to other quilters. Fandom In Stitches, and it’s inspiration, Harry Potter Paper Piecing, have been responsible for turning many non-quilters into serious quilters!

Piecing of Doom

Project of Doom - All the blocks embroidered

Guess what I finished the embroidery on last night and will be PIECING today?! That’s right, my Project of Doom blocks will be a quilt top by the end of the day! Many of the participants in my Harry Potter Block of the Week opted to add different elements to their quilt after it was in bookcase format. I am undecided on that. Since I designed it, it’s already about as personalized as it’s going to get for me. There is one thing I might try…but first thing’s first, rows of books!
