Rainbow Cascade – Let’s Get Started!

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Welcome to the Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along! I’ve been so excited to share and today is the day we begin!

Rainbow Cascade is the single 10″ paper pieced block you see above, made in a literal rainbow of colors, all put together to create one stunning quilt!

The free pattern includes complete paper pieced patterns in shaded & unshaded versions, 1″ scale for proper printing, suggested cutting instructions to make piecing (and chain piecing!) easier, Coloring Pages for all quilt sizes, fabric amounts needed, and printing permission in case you’d like to print at a copy shop.

Need to learn to paper piece? I can help with that!

On the second and fourth Mondays of each month through April, I’ll be sharing a nudge and letting you know which blocks to make next.

To make this as easy as possible, and to not tie you down to a single quilt along (because we all know that never works!),  you will never need to make more than four blocks in a two week period.
Fabric pull for #rainbowcascadeqal! We begin next Monday on #sewhooked. I'm working entirely from stash to make the 70" x 80" version. Will you be quilting along? Show us your #fabric! #quiltalong #qal #freepattern #sewhookedpattern #jenniferofenstein #ra

I’m making my personal Rainbow Cascade quilt as a stash-busting project. I’ll be talking about that more tomorrow on Talk to Me Tuesday!

I highly recommend using an Add-A Quarter-Ruler during paper piecing to minimize bulk AND to press seams open when piecing paper pieced sections together.

Free Pattern Friday – Holiday House 2017

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

After a week away from Free Pattern Friday for charity work, I’m back with a fun favorite, Holiday House!

Holiday House was first shared as part of a blog hop back in 2011. I’ve updated the pattern for 2017, adding a 10″ version for your piecing pleasure!

I can’t help but think that Holiday House would make a fantastic block swap!

Even with a single block repeating, Holiday House would make such a fun quilt!

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Hello, friends!

Next week, we’ll begin our Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along!

Rainbow Cascade QAL coming to sewhooked.com September 2017!

Rainbow Cascade is the single paper pieced block you see above, made in a rainbow of colors, all put together to create one stunning quilt!

On the second and fourth Mondays of each month starting next week through April, I’ll be sharing a nudge and letting you know which blocks to make next.

ALL instructions, including fabric amounts below, will be included in the FREE original pattern to be released next Monday.

Need to learn to paper piece? I can help with that!

Fabric amounts are included for the following quilt sizes:

To make this as easy as possible, and to not tie you down to a single quilt along (because we all know that never works!),  you will never need to make more than four blocks in a two week period. ♥

FABRIC NEEDED

Amounts are generous estimates, but paper piecing styles can differ.

I’ll be using this pattern as a stash buster and will be using a variety of different fabrics from my stash. Feel free to do the same!

A Different Kind of Friday

Hello, friends.

Let me start by saying I completely forgot about Free Pattern Friday this week. My mind has been elsewhere. I’m sure that once I explain, you’ll understand.

For most of the week, I’ve been fielding emails and social media messages in my role for The Linus Connection. Our organization is doing what we can to help with the relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey evacuees by providing handmade blankets to children displaced from their homes.

In addition to our local volunteers, we’ve had quilters and blanket makers from all over the country step up to help. The outpouring of love and helping hands has been amazing.

If you’d like to help, check out this post on the Linus website for more information. I’m the Jennifer listed in the graphic above, so you have questions, please feel free to ask! You can comment here or contact me at my Linus email.

If you’re local, you can drop handmade blankets & quilts off at Honey Bee Quilt Store. We will continue to collect blankets & quilts as usual at our monthly meeting on September 16.

@thelinusconnection = 💟 @Regrann from @thelinusconnection - First delivery to #adrn! #quiltsforharvey #linusconnection #quiltforgood #texasstrong #Austincares - #regrann

As of yesterday, we’ve been able to get over 200 handmade quilts, yarn blankets, and fleece blankets into the hands of the Austin Disaster Relief Network. Those blankets will go directly to those children affected by hurricane-related evacuations.

To stay up to date on what The Linus Connection is doing to help, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

#lionking quilt 2, quilted and ready to trim and bind for @thelinusconnection. Blocks made by the @fandominstitches Facebook group. Designed, pieced, and quilted by me. #quiltforgood #quiltsforharvey #quiltsfortexasIn between email, social media messages, and other updates, I’ve been working furiously to finish a few of my Linus WIPs. Lion King Quilt 2 is quilted and needs binding. I’ve got another UFO block quilt top quilted. It also needs binding. I’m hoping to get those finished today.
#spiderman and #batman fleece remnants from @joann_stores to make a couple of fun, quick blankets for @thelinusconnection's effort to provide handmade blankets to children affected by #hurricaneharvey. I've also got two quilts to bind. Work, work, work! #

Yesterday, I needed to run to Jo-Ann’s and I scored two good sized remnants of fleece while I was there, one Spiderman, and one Batman. I’ll be turning both of these into blankets for Linus, too.

Want to help, but don’t want to make a quilt or blanket?

Donate to the Austin Disaster Relief Network. This is a local organization. They will get much-needed donations where they need to go. More about their efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Donate to Austin Pets Alive. They are the non-profit where we adopted our fluffy orange cats, Ramses & Iliad. APA and their volunteers have rescued hundreds of displaced pets and are collecting supplies to help take care of them. There is loads more information on their Facebook page.

Make a pillowcase and donate it for the new pillows going on the shelter beds. Honey Bee Quilt Store has free kits. Contact the store for more information. You can also use one my free tutorials to make a pillowcase. Video here. Text version here.

These are just a few of the ways you can get involved. These are some of my personal favorite ways to help. Do what works best for you.

Stay safe,

Free Pattern Friday: Go, Team!

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I’ve made two trips to Dallas in the last two weeks to help get my youngest kiddo and his roommate all set up for their second year at university. They are already doing well at this adulting business, making it to classes, finding jobs, and feeding themselves, all while hopefully sleeping more than I did when I was in college!

With that in mind, I’m revisiting a pattern I designed for the College Days Blog Hop back in 2014, Go, Team!

Go, Team! is 10″ paper pieced (10 1/2″ with seam allowance), and can be made in whatever team colors that best suit your purpose. My version was made in school colors for my eldest child. 🙂

WRITE – A Mini Quilt To Paper Piece

write title square

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce a brand new (but kind of old!) pattern to share!

WRITE is an 8″ x 20″ finished, entirely paper pieced mini quilt.

You can find the pattern for just $4.95 in my Craftsy Shop. If you prefer, it’s also available on Etsy.

Members of the Sewhooked Patreon Pattern Club should already have a copy in their inboxes. Thank you so much for your support!

I’d like to spend special thanks out to Susan P. & MJ for testing this pattern for accuracy. They were extraordinarily helpful with the process and I was able to improve the pattern greatly with their feedback. Coloring page photo by MJ. ♥

TTMT #435 – Lions, Take 2!

My tripod decided we’d have a weird angle for today’s video. Time to tighten it up so it will stop veering off to one side!

In the video, I said something about driving to Dallas tomorrow. Tomorrow is actually today. I recorded on Monday. 😉
