I’ve very excited to share my block for Vol. 14, Bettie’s Bikini (pg. 22)!

bettie-page-2

This block was inspired by pin-up model Bettie Page after I read that she made all of her own swimwear and lingerie.

my-block-is-in-vol-14-bettie

While not a replica of any specific suit, this bitty bikini made in reproduction fabrics reminds me of Bettie’s signature style!

Just like all of my patterns, Bettie’s Bikini was designed in EQ7.

Vol12-blog-tour-this-week-socialmedia

Welcome to my post for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, vol. 12 Blog Tour!

I’m extra excited to share today’s patterns because it’s not only one of my favorite things I’ve shared with Quiltmaker, but it’s one of my favorite patterns that I’ve ever designed!

I had such fun creating this block and I hope you love it as much as I do!

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016

Here it is: Special Delivery!

You’ll find this red-wearing fella and his sleigh full of presents on page 19 of Vol. 12.

See more of my Sunbonnet Sue designs.

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016 To add a to the fun, I embellished my block with hand embroidery (patterns included in the magazine).

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016

How about a snowflake? Here in Austin, Texas, it’s likely to be the only snow I see this year!

I also had a lot of fun playing with Special Delivery and combining this block with some of my other designs to see what kind of fun quilt layouts I could come up with.

Here are two of my favorites:

Table Runner idea with Special Delivery and On, Dasher! by Jennifer Ofenstein

Here, Special Delivery meets my reindeer block, On, Dasher! for a fun Christmas-themed table runner.

Quilt idea with Special Delivery and On, Dasher! by Jennifer Ofenstein

This layout is a bit more ambitious, with the same number of blocks as the table runner, but with the reindeer set in an arc. I just love this idea! Imagine this with a fun snowflake print fabric or lovely hand embroidered embellishments like oodles of snowflakes and reins for the reindeer team!

On, Dasher! A paper pieced pattern by Jennifer Ofenstein

Like On, Dasher? You can find him in my Craftsy Pattern Shop!

Just like all of my patterns, Special Delivery and the above fun layouts were designed in EQ.

If these girls remind you of Sunbonnet Sue, that’s because she’s one of my absolute favorites to design! I love her so much, she and her friends have an entire page right here on Sewhooked.

I used Kona cotton for the background and lots of fun scraps for the rest. I just love how their little shovels and sandals turned out!

Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Vol. 9 Blog Tour!

Welcome to Sewhooked and thanks for stopping by for the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Blog Tour for Volume 9!

If it’s your first visit to Sewhooked, welcome! If you’re an old friend, welcome back!

This is a super exciting day for me. Not only do I completely love my design for this issue, but it’s the fourth time one of my blocks was chosen for 100 Blocks, which you have to admit, is super happy-making!

Be sure and stick around to the end for TWO awesome giveaways!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein 2

Here it is, my delicious block, Yum Yum Strawberry Cake! You can find it on page 38.

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

This part never gets old for me!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein block

Yum Yum, Strawberry Cake was born from a sketch of cake. It was just a doodle really. I was having coffee, and as I tend to do, was doodling as I talked. And then there was cake!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

This particular block was made using a variety of fabrics from my stash. There’s a little Michael Miller, some Moda and some Timeless Treasures, as well as a few miscellaneous scraps for the stem. Maybe we should say Yum Yum Fabric!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

To add a bit of interest, I decided a declaration of the deliciousness of cake was in order! I use a variety of methods to transfer embroidery to fabric, but for this project, I decided Saral wax free paper would work best. It comes off fairly easily, so it isn’t great for highly detailed embroidery, but it’s perfect for something simple and fast like “yum yum.”

saral paper

You can find Saral paper on Amazon or at your local arts & crafts supply.

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein tracing

Here’s what the traced word looks like. Perfect for stitching!

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein

While working on my design for Yum Yum Strawberry Cake, I kept coming back to the idea of placemats. How fun, how easy and how very summery! I created four coordinating placemats with four different cakes in similar styles. You can find this photo in the same issue of QM, page 20.

Strawberry Yum Yum placemat by Jennifer Ofenstein

I can’t even begin to tell you how happy these placemats make me! I hope to be able to share instructions for them very soon!

And now, the part of this post you’ve been waiting for…

Between heaven and Texas

About Between Heaven and Texas (from the publisher):

In this luminous prequel to her beloved Cobbled Court Quilts series, New York Times bestselling author Marie Bostwick takes readers into the heart of a small Texas town and the soul of a woman who discovers her destiny there…

Welcome to Too Much–where the women are strong-willed and the men are handsome yet shiftless. Ever since Mary Dell Templeton and her twin sister Lydia Dale were children, their Aunt Velvet has warned them away from local boys. But it’s well known that the females in Mary Dell’s family have two traits in common–superior sewing skills and a fatal weakness for men.

While Lydia Dale grows up petite and pretty, Mary Dell just keeps growing. Tall, smart, and sassy, she is determined to one day turn her love of sewing into a business. Meanwhile, she’ll settle for raising babies with her new husband, Donny. But that dream proves elusive too, until finally, Mary Dell gets the son she always wanted–a child as different as he is wonderful. And as Mary Dell is forced to reconsider what truly matters in her family and her marriage, she begins to piece together a life that, like the colorful quilts she creates, will prove vibrant, rich, and absolutely unforgettable. . .

About Marie Bostwick:

Marie Bostwick is the New York Times Bestselling author of eleven books, including the popular Cobbled Court Quilt series of novel.  She lives in Connecticut with Brad, her husband of thirty-one years. When not writing or volunteering for her church, she enjoys quilting, gardening, reading, watching movies, spending time with her friends and family, and especially playing with her grandsons. Marie travels extensively, speaking at libraries, bookstores, quilt guilds, and at quilt shows. She has been a featured speaker at the Paducah Quilt Festival and the Houston International Quilt Festival. In 2013, she will be the keynote speaker at Quilt Nebraska.
