Happy Caturday!

Kitty #selfie!

Rose says hello!

She loves looking at herself, which makes taking a kitty selfie the obvious thing to do! She and I have been busy bonding and I am loving having a kitty that likes to be picked up and snuggled. Merlin and Marie, our other two kitties are sweeties, but being picked up is not part of their contracts. 😉

I bought this super cutie as a welcome home gift for my daughter. It's custom made by the fabulous duo at Deranged Delightz on Etsy. #mushroom #crochet

Yesterday, I drove up to the University of North Texas to help my daughter move home for the summer. It was a whirlwind day with more traffic than I could have even fathomed. It took me just about three hours to drive there, and five to drive back. Egads, was I tired last night, but so very very glad to have my girl home!

This little guy above is a gift I purchased from a friend’s Etsy shop, Deranged Delightz. He’s a Moshi Mushroom, custom made for my daughter in her two favorite colors as a coming home surprise. She loved him and he will now live with her other favorite stufties!

Feeling totally spoiled! Birthday goodies in the mail from my friend Terry. ♡

The  very same friend gifted me with a gorgeous pair of socks and a sweet turtle bag for my birthday! I’ve already worn the perfectly fitting, gorgeous socks and the bag carried my snacks for my road trip yesterday.

The owls on my birthday socks from Terry!

And the socks? THEY HAVE OWLS ON THEM!

Not quite where I wanted to be today, but closer than I was before! #projectofdoom #fandominstitches #harrypotter
This is the current state of the Make-A-Wish Project of Doom. I really wanted it to be basted before the weekend, but it just didn’t happen. Fortunately, it doesn’t need to be in the mail for another couple of weeks, so I have time to get it basted, quilted and bound. Time’s ticking, but I’ll get it done! That backing fabric? Jelly beans! As my friend Amber said, Bertie Bott’s for everyone!

How to Add & Sell a Pattern on Craftsy

I'm a Craftsy Designer

Hi there Sewhooked friends!

As you probably know by now, I am an independant pattern designer, sharing patterns both here and on Fandom In Stitches,  selling on Etsy and Craftsy and with the occasional pattern published in a magazine.

While I started designing years before Craftsy existed, it is the existence of Craftsy that kicked my ability to design and share both my free and for sale patterns to a wider crafty audience.  What is most helpful to me as an indie designer with limited resources is that Craftsy is free for me to use. FREE. If you are a Designer, you know how hard it can be to scrape a living selling patterns. There are a million patterns online and many, many of them free. Making money in this industry is hard, but thanks to Craftsy, it’s a little bit easier and I can keep on doing what I love.

Without Craftsy, I would not had a venue for Paper Piecing Vintage, the 2014 Sewhooked Block of the Month, an event that I’ve not only loved creating but, here’s that word again, sharing!

Many of my readers are also Designers and I know at least a few of you lovely people that have indicated you would like to share your patterns but you don’t know where to start.  I have some super useful information directly from Craftsy that will help you get started!

Want to design, but don’t know where to start?

We have some great resources over on Fandom In Stitches to help get you going!

I’d like to add that you do not have to sell patterns on Craftsy to share patterns.  You can opt to share patterns for free. For my Designer friends that work on fandom patterns, FREE is always your best choice. Keep in mind the moment you start selling fandom-related patterns, you violate laws surrounding derivative work and risk copyright infringement.

Full Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links which means I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking through.

In addition to wonderful online courses and craft supplies, Craftsy also has an independent online pattern store that lets anyone upload and sell downloadable e-patterns with no fee!

How do you add a pattern to Craftsy and start your pattern store? It’s easy!

1. Make sure you have a Paypal account. All pattern transactions happen through Paypal, and Craftsy requires that you have a Student, Premier, or Business account in order to sell patterns.
2. Put your pattern in .pdf format. You can’t upload any patterns to the online pattern store unless they’re a .pdf file format, so if they’re currently saved as a Word doc, .jpg, or other file format, you must convert it to a .pdf before you upload it to Craftsy. (See Fandom In Stitches for some easy ways to do this.)
3. Include a photo. All patterns must have at least one photo to accompany them, but you can add up to five photos. Colorful, interesting photos tend to work the best for catching our members’ eyes!
4. Fill out the pattern description. We will ask you some basic questions around your pattern making it easier for Craftsy folk to find your pattern and know what your pattern is for. Make sure you have info about your pattern handy for this step.

For more information on how to sell a pattern through Craftsy, or to get started, visit Craftsy today!

The Linus Connection needs yarn donations. April 2014 photo yarndonationsneeded_thelinusconnection_zpsb01796a2.jpg

It’s been a crazy Linus Connection-filled week for me! While our actual meeting isn’t until next weekend, I have spearheaded a yarn drive to help my favorite blanket charity. We have been in serious need of yarn donations and what better place to ask for help than my online friends?

Everyone that knits or crochets will, possibly grudgingly admit that we all have balls, skeins and hanks of yarn that we are never going to use. That yarn taking up space? We can use it! The Linus Connection needs 100% acrylic washable yarn to make our child-friendly hypo-allergenic blankets for kids in need in Central Texas.

Have yarn? Drop me an email and I’ll send you my mailing address!

Assembly line! Prepping 5 tops to #fmq. I made most of these at Retreat in March from orphan blocks. They will all go to #TheLinusConnection. #blanketcharity

My basting mojo was high yesterday! I paired five orphan block quilt with backs and batting and then basted them all! One is quilted with four more to go! Each and every one of these will go to The Linus Connection when complete and a couple of these will be great big check marks on my 2014 UFO completion list!

A special shout out to Sarah from Houston. All of the batting used for these quilts came from her donation!

More #yarn and #crochet goodness, this time from Sarah in Houston. Thank you Sarah! #TheLinusConnection #blanketcharity

Yarn donations are coming in! Yarny goodness from Sarah in Houston!

Yarn Donation for The Linus Connection
Pretties from my dear friend Amber. This is the second box of yarn she’s sent!

Donation for The Linus Connection from Liza
Here’s another wonderful donation from Liza! Yarn and blankets and granny squares, oh my!

Charity Project of Doom

There’s a VERY special Project (of Doom!) going on over on Fandom In Stitches. It’s this week only, so if you’re a quilter, please be sure to check it out!

Rose!

Rose came out of hiding to visit us downstairs earlier this week. She’s coming out of her shell little by little. The poor sweetie lived a long time in a shelter’s kennel, and all the space she has access to now is a bit overwhelming. We’ve been using a Feliway diffuser, which seems to be making all the difference!

Rose!
For those of you anxiously awaiting the name of our newest furry family member, I’d like to introduce Rose! Her name is inspired by four of our family’s favorite fandoms: The Lord of the Rings (Samwise’s wife, Rose Cotton), Harry Potter (Rose Weasley), Doctor Who (Rose Tyler), and Homestuck (Rose Lalonde). We’ve pretty much covered all bases for all two-legged family members! Also, and most importantly, she just looks like a Rose. 🙂
See you tomorrow with Paper Piecing Vintage: April!

Two Dollars in March

If you have visited my Craftsy shop, then you’ll know that the grand majority of the individual blocks I’ve designed and shared there are priced at $2. This has been the case since I first opened my shop.

My philosophy has always been to keep my prices as low as my little business can bear because I know what I myself, as a quilter and a shopper, think is a fair price.

It’s been several years now since I first started selling patterns and in order to keep up with the craziness that are PayPal fees, all $2 patterns will be going up to $2.95 in April. I do hope you’ll forgive me for this business necessity and I also hope that if there is a pattern (or patterns!) you’ve been thinking about getting, you’ll grab it now while it’s still $2!

The prices of entire sets will stay the same, so, as usual, buying patterns by the set will save you a significant amount.

Pretty Pretty Pinwheel

Pretty Pretty Pinwheel!
As I’ve been working my through tidying up my Free Pattern page, it occured to me that it has been some time since I’ve shared a free non-fandom pattern.
Well, we can’t have that, now can we?
Here is a sweet little pattern that I’ve dubbed Pretty Pretty Pinwheel.  I think you’ll find fun and easy to piece.
Once the units are made, it goes together like a four-patch. If you chain piece the similar units, you’ll find it goes even faster!

Download the 6 inch Pretty Pretty Pinwheel for free from Google Drive!

The pattern is three colors plus a background fabric. Each color is indicated by a different texture. To make it piecing easy, I just penned in where the colors go.

Crafting The Holidays

It’s officially the day after Thanksgiving here in the U.S.!

The leftovers are in the fridge and the countdown to gift giving for many people has begun.

Black Friday? Nah, I don’t do that. I advocate a Handmade Holiday season!

Want to shop handmade? Etsy is a great place to start. There are loads of talented crafters, makers and artisans selling their wares.

You can even find a few goodies made by yours truly. I’ve got quilted items I made myself, magazines my patterns have been featured in and I’m regularly adding scrap bags of fabric from my own stash that are perfect for paper piecing (for a limited time, of course…even Tribbles stop breeding eventually!).

Here are a couple of the goodies currently in my Etsy shop:

Sweet Skating Sue
Sweet Skating Sue is just $19.99 and comes ready to hang.
OR you can make her yourself for free.
Never paper pieced? This $3 tutorial includes complete instructions and the pattern to make Sweet Skating Sue yourself!

In A Castle + Fairy Tale Femmes
Fairy Tale Femmes + In A Castle, $99.95

Paper Piecing Vintage – Coming in 2014!

Let’s face it, when I get ready to sew, paper piecing is what I love best.

There’s this other thing, too: I’ve always wanted to make a vintage-inspired sampler quilt.

After years of contemplating the idea of paper piecing vintage blocks and considering what blocks I personally would most like to include in a quilt like this, the idea has solidified.

Please join me beginning January 1, 2014

for a very special year-long event:

Paper Piecing Vintage - a Block of the Month Sample

This will be a for purchase Block of the Month (BOM) through my Craftsy store that includes each month’s block in two pattern sizes: 6″ & 12″.

The entire quilt is designed in two colors with a solid background. Can you make it scrappy? ABSOLUTELY!

If you sign up in December, you will get a super duper special discount, because honestly, I want you to play along. Quilting is more fun when we do it together!

The best part? You only need to sign up once:

It works like this:

  • Once you’ve paid, you’ll receive a notification from Craftsy to download your pattern.
  • One the first of each month, I will update Paper Piecing Vintage on Craftsy.
  • You will receive notification from Craftsy that the updated pattern is available.
  • Download and print the pattern for each month’s block in the size of your choice.
  • That’s one payment, one time for the entire 12 month series; that’s 24 patterns total, each of the 12 patterns in two sizes, all for one price.
  • Any questions? Ask! I’m just a comment away. 😉

I'm a Craftsy Designer

Remember, buying a pattern from time to time helps keep my free content free, and I LOVE to share free content!

Sign ups begin December 3!

Do you think you might play along? Let me know in comments before December 3 and I will give two lucky commenters a free copy of the first month’s pattern!

Do you Facebook? Join our spiffy new group for Paper Piecing Vintage and quilt with friends during 2014!

Oh, lookie, free classes!

Please allow me to shout a bit about Craftsy here!

Craftsy Logo

There are two Craftsy classes that are FREE, today, right now that you guys have got to know about!

Like I said, these are FREE. All you need is a Craftsy account (also free!). Once you’ve got an account (and you can sign up using Facebook or by setting up a new account…sooooo easy!), just click on the links below and then “enroll” and the class is yours to watch anytime you want!

Seriously, how cool is that?!

The first (FREE!) class is Piece, Patch, Quilt: Basic Quiltmaking Skills. If you are a beginner and have been dying to learn to quilt but don’t have time and/or money to invest in a class, this is the perfect class for you. You learn simply everything you need to make your first quilt from beginning to end. That’s right. Prep, rotary cutting, piecing, the quilt sandwich, tying or piecing all the way to binding. For FREE. Seriously, why not? Even if you’ve done some quilting already, there’s always something to learn! Need I mention FREE again?!

The second class will teach you how to take Professional Family Portraits. How perfect a class is this for this time of year? ou will learn to wow everyone with professional quality pictures. I’ve already enrolled and plan to take full advantage of what this class has to offer. For years now, I’ve taken our family portraits myself with my camera’s timer and a tripod. I’m hoping to learn some new tips that will help make our pictures even more awesome! I’m especially excited because the instructor is Kirk Tuck, a commercial photographer based in Austin, Texas, which is where I live, too!

Go, sign up! Even if you don’t use them today, you never know when you might like to give them a whirl. If you’ve been thinking about trying an online class, trying a free class is definitely a good way to start. 🙂

AmysCreativeSide

Today is the LAST day to vote for your favorite quilts during the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! You’ll find my entries under Wall Hangings and Bed Quilts.

Anyway, that’s enough for me today! I just couldn’t let you miss these AWESOME FREE classes.
