Hoppity Frog

Frogger Pixel Quilt

Today is Make it Mosaic over on Fandom In Stitches. There was HUGE excitement when I first posted the Challenge, but it we only had a tiny turn out. Even so, the entries received were super cute and I appreciate each one!

Most of the time when we have a Challenge or Event on FiS, I’m the organizer. I still like to participate even though it would be silly to award myself, so if there are enough minutes to squeeze out of the day, I’ll whip something up to share.

Frogger Pixel QuiltWith that in mind, I created this fun Frogger design! I didn’t play video games much as a kid, but when I did, I tended to play Frogger. My game abilities are limited, as was my pocket money as a kid, so I focused every quarter on the same game in the hopes that I would improve and not completely waste the dollar bills I had to spend at the Putt Putt!

Also, Frogger is just cute.

Made from 2 1/2″ squares. You can adapt it to your own needs by increasing or decreasing the patch sizes.
There is also a possibility that I spent a bit of time getting splatted by cars as I tried to safely navigate my frog across the road. It was research, I swear it was research! Play Frogger for free here.

Jack and Few Other Thing

Union Jack, paper pieced

Union Jack

5″ x 8″ paper pieced

a free pattern designed for Fandom In Stitches

One of the great joys of running a fandom website like Fandom In Stitches is the never ending variety of requests. On any given day, there are over 100 requests in the spreadsheet that the FiS Designers share.

This freebie is one such pattern.

I have to admit, the Union Jack, as well as a whole slew of other flags, is included in the patterns that come with EQ7, the design software that I use to design most of my patterns. There are actually a ton of patterns in the software that can be used, adapted, etc. What I did with this was to change the size, color and number the pattern and make it available as a PDF so it’s free and easy to use.

The Union Jack is just the tip of the iceberg for my recent free design work. I’ve been furiously going through my older patterns and updating them one at a time. You’ll find those under Free Patterns with the notation “updated 2014.”

I started designing at the end of 2004 or so, and many of my patterns haven’t been updated since then. Back in those days, I drew everything out in Photoshop. Those early patterns are still quite usable, but they aren’t as clean and easy to read as my current patterns. I suppose it’s obvious to say that I’ve improved a lot in the ten years I’ve been designing quilt patterns! With that in mind, I’m updating everything to fit with my current style and to make it much easier for you to use.

Here are just a few of the updates you’ll find. Click on the image to go to the pattern. For even more updates, check out Free Patterns . These will also be added to Craftsy, as time permits.

Summer 2014, Stitched

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

The Summer of Stitching has concluded on Fandom In Stitches!

Next week, there will be a BIG wrap-up post that includes the winner of the Free FiS t-shirt as well as every pattern submitted for the event. Be sure to stop by Fandom In Stitches on Wednesday for that!

At the beginning of the summer, I challenged to design one new pattern for each SoS theme. There were 12 in all, and in the end, I’d designed 15 patterns, though I only stitched 14 of them.

Underachiever, right?! 😉

All of my designs are entirely free, all are hand embroidered and each design works up to approximately 7″ (my blocks are trimmed to 8 1/2″ after stitching).

I hope you find one among the lot that you’ll enjoy!

All of these patterns and more can be found under Free Fandom Patterns:

Still Stitching!

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

I’m a little behind on sharing my last two designs for Fandom In Stitches’s Summer of Stitching! Be sure to stop by next week for the final installment: I ❤ Disney!

C3P0 - We're Doomed
C3P0 – We’re Doomed
(with bonus quote – “Let the Wookiee Win”)
7″ embroidered
C3P0 was always my favorite Star Wars character. I love how pessimistic he is and how much he depends on R2D2 without even realizing it. When it came time to design a Star Wars block, he was the first thing that popped in my mind.
Game of Thrones: The Eons
7″ embroidered
I’m a bit behind on Game of Thrones, having only read the books once and only watching the first season of the show. My daughter is currently working her way through the books and as she and I both agree that dragons are one of the best parts of any fantasy novel, I designed this block for her!
Get the free pattern for both designs by clicking on the name under the photo.

Achieve!

One Achievement Hunter cushion, ready to live in the dorm! Both of my kids and the hubby are big fans of all things Rooster Teeth and I mentioned recently that I worked on some cosplay stuff for my two teenagers for RTX.

My daughter really wanted an Achievement Hunter cushion to take back to school when she moves into the dorm for her second year at university this fall and I had a pillow form just waiting, so yesterday, I knuckled down and got it done! Achievement Hunter Cushion in progress I started by trying to figure this out using my favorite method of paper piecing. After about 20 minutes, it was quite clear that it would take me much longer to design it than it would to stitch it.

Finally, I threw in the proverbial towel and decided to go outside of my comfort zone and try applique.

First, I printed the Achievement Hunter symbol on the paper side of lightweight fusible webbing. I ironed that on to the green fabric and then very, very carefully cut out the shapes I needed, being careful to preserve the negative space.

I ironed the star on first, and then used the negative space pieces so I could get the circle places correct. Then, I ironed the whole shebang. So far, so good! After ironing, I stitched around with monofilament thread for extra security. I used a tear-away stabilizer on the back, which really helped keep things nice and flat while stitching.

The cushion cover was completed using an envelope style (two hemmed piecing overlap on the back) and then inserting a pre-made pillow form. Made with a 16″ pillow form. The center block is 12″ (12 1/2″ with seam allowance) and the green border are 2″ (2 1/2″).

I am happy and the daughter is VERY happy, so yay!

Star Trek stitch in progress

Sneak Peek! Coming next week – my offering for The Summer of Stitching: Star Trek week!

Marie has been supervising my sewing today. She's a task master! #cat #kitty Marie was very helpful while I was sewing yesterday. She hung out in her window perch and made sure I stayed on task! Rosie-Posey! Rose isn’t interested in sewing just yet, but she’s still darn cute, so I had to share a photo of her pretty face.

Untamed

Aslan: Not A Tame Lion (close-up)

I’ve gotten a bit behind sharing my Summer of Stitches designs, so we’re going to have two weeks’ worth today!

Aslan: Not A Tame Lion
7″ embroidered

For the Chronicles of Narnia theme, I worked on an sketch of Aslan, aided by my bff, who suggested the quote “Not a tame lion.”

I love how he turned out and can think of a handful of other fandoms he’d work for, too!

Aslan: Not A Tame Lion (close-up)

Whisker details. I’m especially proud of these!

Cobert: TRUTHINESS

Stephen Colbert: TRUTHINESS

7″ Embroidered

For the most recent theme, I ❤ T.V., I decided to go with one of the two shows my family rarely misses, The Colbert Report. After toying with a variety of themes, I decided to focus on Colbert’s arched brow.

The text, once again, was suggested by bff, Jewells… “Truthiness.” Seriously, what would I do without her? 😉

Some Infinities

Our Little Infinity

Our Little Infinity

inspired  by The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green

7″ embroidered

Yesterday, I shared the Interview with the Vampire-inspired design (also below) that I created for The Summer of Stitching on Fandom in Stitches.

Not long after posting that, I realized there was something I really, really wanted to make and share.  As I’ve mentioned many, many times before, I am a big fan of John Green. The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time I read it and I grow more fond of the story with each re-read.

Our Little Infinity took me a little over three hours to draft, trace & stitch the above pattern. It was also designed for The Summer of Stitching  on Fandom In Stitches for the I  Books theme.

Apparently, I just can’t stop stitching!

Okay? Okay.
