An Unusual Day

Remember that post, oh, a few hours ago, in which I mentioned that Craft had featured my Harry Potter quilt?

Well, later, this happened:

Harry Potter Quilt on The Daily What

A friend emailed me a link to The Daily What, where they have my quilt listed as the Kickass Quilt of the Day.

It’s been such a crazy day, with my inbox exploding, Twitter tweeting and Facebook, well, whatever FB does.

The evolution of the Harry Potter quilting community that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of over the last five or six years is the best part of all of this for me. Because this quilt? I finished it in 2007.

If  you’re not a regular Sewhooked visitor or one of those fantastically awesome HP fans that sees the quilt and instantly thinks “I get it,” you might think I’m just a crazy fan with nothing else to do. You’d be both right and wrong. Sure, I am a crazy fan, I won’t ever deny that, but boy do I have other things to do. The important part is how I choose to spend my time.

Make what you love. Love what you make.

How Wednesday Greeted Me

My HP Quilt on Craft

I woke up this morning to an inbox full of messages and posts on my Twitter and Facebook about a certain quilt showing up on Craft this morning.  When I clicked the link, my eyes were filled with the image above.

Woah.

And you know what? There’s even a link to the Project of Doom!

You all know that if I love anything, it’s paper piecing and fandom. Despite having completed my quilt in 2007, I still love quilting Harry and I still love my fandom friends.

Thanks, Craft, for sharing my labor of love and thank you, thank you to everyone that was excited enough about it to get in touch with me first thing this morning!

Remember, all Harry Potter free quilt patterns on Sewhooked, as well as other fandom patterns, both mine and the Sewhooked Guest Designers‘, are moving to Fandom In Stitches. I’m two designers away from having the Harry Potter page complete, where you’ll find all HP patterns organized by categories in my favorite easy to browse thumbnail format.

Fandom patterns will continue to be available on Sewhooked for a limited time and then those pages will automatically re-direct to FiS.

Oh, Portal!

Aperture Science Aperture Science

Aperture Science, a paper pieced quilt block. L – EQ7 version, R-my pieced block

For a brief period in April and May, my thirteen year old became my personal assistant. He was helpful with laundry, with taking out the trash, yardwork…you name it!

While he is genuinely a good kid,  like most people that have jobs, he did it for the money. You see, Portal 2
was on the horizon, and as I was eagerly informed, it was a Must Have Game.

He worked hard, earned his money, and now owns (and has beaten) Portal II.

When I started Fandom In Stitches, the first comment he made to me was how amazingly cool it would be to have Portal quilt blocks. Spoken like a true fan with a quilty mom! He helped me choose a few that I could work on, the first being Aperture Science.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve transitioned from designing my patterns exclusively in Photoshop to using a combination of EQ7 and Photoshop. The advantage of this is being able to have sample images before I ever piece a block. It gives me a really good idea where a block is going and if I’m getting just what I want out of it.

Above, you can see the EQ version that I mocked up after drafting my pattern on the left and my actual pieced block on the right. Pretty cool, huh?

He loves the new block and has requested an Aperture Science pillowcase…perfect for dragging to sleep-overs with his video game loving friends!

Something Quilty This Way Comes

Something very exciting has been brewing in my mind the last couple of months. Plans are in action! Things are happening! Designers have been contacted! A domain is bought!

What, wait? A domain?

Yes, yes, yes!

Fandom In Stitches is coming.

Fandom In Stitches will be fandom quilters one-stop-site for quilt patterns from a variety of fandoms. Many of the Sewhooked Guest Designers have already signed on to share their awesome fandom quilt patterns. Instead of searching by designer, you’ll be searching by genre or fandom, to make it simple and easy to find what you’re looking for!

How much is this going to cost? Nothing, nada, zilch. Fandom patterns have been and will remain free. All Fandom In Stitches Designers, including myself, donate their patterns free of charge for the love of fandom.  Please see copyright information on Fandom In Stitches for details.

Bother, Bother, Bother

For those of you that don’t follow my quilting adventures over on Harry Potter Paper Piecing, I could not resist sharing our “week off” patterns.

Members voted to have one week off of the Project of Doom, our HP block of the week. That doesn’t mean, of course, that my brain turns off or I stop drafting new patterns!

Update: All of my Project of Doom patterns plus many more can now be found on Fandom in Stitches!

Here for your entertainment are some of my favorites as depicted by the brilliant Neil Nicieregaas’ Potter Puppet Pals.

Each pattern is 5″ (5.5″ unfinished).

I have long been entertained by (read: giggled at) the work of Neil Cicierega, creator of the Potter Puppet Pals. I think part of what I love the most, aside from the humor and general cuteness is the fact that his mom made the puppets for him.

Looking for The Project of Doom? Week 15 is right this way! There are links to all previous weeks in each post.

The Project of Doom resumes next week on Harry Potter Paper Piecing.
