Free Pattern Friday – Nellie Narwhal

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Today, we delve back into the Sewhooked Suggestion Box!

This one comes from Kristel, who you may know from Talk to Me Tuesday. You can also find her on Instagram as @clumsykristel.

Kristel requested a Narwhal to paper piece.  She also tested this fun pattern for me!

A narwhal is basically a unicorn whale. I know!! It’s absolutely real and very unusual looking. I couldn’t resist making it just a little cutesy!

Nellie Narwhal (named with the help of my daughter) is available to paper piece in 5″ and 10″. There are two versions of the 5″ pattern, one with embroidered face and one with paper pieced face. Make whichever size and version will work best for you!

Free Pattern Friday – Descent

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Today, I’m pleased to be sharing a pattern that started out as a bit of a doodle during the planning stage of Rainbow Cascade.

Descent is a 10″ pattern to paper piece. It looks much more difficult than it really is. I hope you’ll give it a try!

Rainbow Cascade – Nudge 2

rainbow cascade badge.jpg

Welcome back to the Rainbow Cascade Quilt Along!

We’ve passed the two-week mark and it’s time for our next prompt.

But first, some housekeeping:

After numerous requests, I’ve decided to make some small updates to the Rainbow Cascade instructions in order for it to be in true ROYGBIV order.

This change will only affect you if you’re making a Rainbow Cascade in the 30″ x 40″ OR 40″ x 50″. For these two sizes, the amount of Orange and Yellow blocks needed will be reversed. 3 Yellow & 2 Orange for both quilt sizes.

If you’re making ANY other quilt size, the ONLY change will be the block order when piecing the quilt top, not the number of blocks you make.

If you finished your first set of blocks, alternative instructions will be noted in the chart below in parenthesis. If you are at all confused, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

I am truly sorry for the change. I had planned to leave the order red>yellow>orange, but it was causing confusion, and I didn’t want that at all.

Pattern pages updated:

  • Blocks Needed Per Quilt Based On Size (pg 7)
  • Block Schedule for Quilting Along (pg 8)
  • Block Color Order Per Quilt Size (pg 9)

Rainbow Cascade is the single 10″ paper pieced block you see above, made in a literal rainbow of colors, all put together to create one stunning quilt!

The free pattern includes complete paper pieced patterns in shaded & unshaded versions, 1″ scale for proper printing, suggested cutting instructions to make piecing (and chain piecing!) easier, Coloring Pages for all quilt sizes, fabric amounts needed, and printing permission in case you’d like to print at a copy shop.

Need to learn to paper piece? I can help with that!

On the second and fourth Mondays of each month through April, I’ll be sharing a nudge and letting you know which blocks to make next.

To make this as easy as possible, and to not tie you down to a single quilt along (because we all know that never works!),  you will never need to make more than four blocks in a two-week period.

Blocks to Make Sept 25 – October 8, 2017

Free Pattern Friday – Fall Placemat Projects

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I often share optional quilt layouts and other suggestions with blocks for inspiration.

For this’s week’s freebie, I jumped in my TARDIS and I traveled in time to a few years ago when I shared the following ideas, as ideas only, for a blog hop.

These fun fall themed placemats are now together in one complete pattern! Pattern document includes project instructions, 2 different pumpkin patterns, maple leaf pattern,  paper pieced nine patch (because it’s way easier than cutting out 2 3/16″ squares!), and layout charts for both projects.

Enjoy, and don’t forget to share your photos with the Sewhooked Facebook Group!

Free Pattern Friday – Friend Gnome

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I have, somewhat surprisingly (to me at least!), had several requests for gnome patterns pop up in the Sewhooked Suggestion Box.

Not being a gnome connoisseur myself, I first had to do a little research.

‘Muggles have garden gnomes, too, you know,’ Harry told Ron as they crossed the lawn.
‘Yeah, I’ve seen those things they think are gnomes,’ said Ron, bent double with his head in a peony bush. ‘Like fat little Father Christmases with fishing rods …’

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

If you’ve been around for a while, you probably know I have a long running love affair with Sunbonnet Sue and her many magical cousins. I’ve been drafting Sue-styled patterns for many years now, but always with my own twist.

With that in mind, I introduce Friend Gnome, a 6″ block to paper piece, inspired by my love of Sunbonnet Sue. This little pattern is quite simple and would be a good second or third project for a beginner looking to make a pattern with a few more pieces.

He doesn’t have a fishing pole, but perhaps one of his potential brothers will!

Free Pattern Friday – Holiday House 2017

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

After a week away from Free Pattern Friday for charity work, I’m back with a fun favorite, Holiday House!

Holiday House was first shared as part of a blog hop back in 2011. I’ve updated the pattern for 2017, adding a 10″ version for your piecing pleasure!

I can’t help but think that Holiday House would make a fantastic block swap!

Free Pattern Friday: Go, Team!

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I’ve made two trips to Dallas in the last two weeks to help get my youngest kiddo and his roommate all set up for their second year at university. They are already doing well at this adulting business, making it to classes, finding jobs, and feeding themselves, all while hopefully sleeping more than I did when I was in college!

With that in mind, I’m revisiting a pattern I designed for the College Days Blog Hop back in 2014, Go, Team!

Go, Team! is 10″ paper pieced (10 1/2″ with seam allowance), and can be made in whatever team colors that best suit your purpose. My version was made in school colors for my eldest child. 🙂

Free Pattern Friday – Owl Wish Upon A Star

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Once again, I’ve dug into my “Unpublished” folder and come up with what I hope you will think is a gem!

Way back in 2010 or 2011, I sent out my first offering to a magazine for publication. It was this fun pattern, Owl Wish Upon A Star. Unfortunately, this sweet guy was rejected and he’s languished on my hard drive ever since!

Here he is today, a super simple 12″ pattern to paper piece. I’ve also included some fun mocked up versions so you can see what a repeat of this sweet block looks like.

Free Pattern Friday – Strawberry

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

Today’s pattern is a sweet part of a previously published pattern! While designing a block some years ago for Quiltmaker, I started with a simple strawberry. That strawberry eventually ended up topping a piece of cake.

Strawberry Yum Yum, by Jennifer Ofenstein 2

Yum Yum Strawberry Cake appeared in Vol 9 of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks.

Today’s pattern is just the strawberry, liberated from the cake! It’s a super simple pattern to paper piece, coming in at 6″ finished.

Enjoy!

Free Pattern Friday – Groovy Mushrooms

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

I always look forward to getting to share with you. ♥

Groovy Mushrooms

Today I’m sharing an old favorite.!

This was my very first hand embroidered pieces made in 2010 or 2011. This was early in my days of learning to hand embroider. This little hoop hangs next to my desk as a reminder that we’re always learning. Also, I think it’s sweet. 🙂

Groovy Mushrooms was inspired by a vintage hand-drawn pattern that came to me in a pile of other things. Date and original designer unknown. I can tell you that the original version was brittle with age and practically fell apart in my hands when I held it. This is my own take on that original doodle.  I share with you now in homage to the unknown, but obviously groovy, artist!
