It’s Linus Saturday today and I’m one of the willing and happy distributor of blankets. We sort them by size, fold them and pack them off to send out to children in crisis in Central Texas.
This month, I’m taking four blankets to the monthly meeting, three courtesy of wonderful friends.

Remember this, when I posted about the UFOs and such I’d like to get finished in 2011? Well, the end of February saw me finishing these blocks above into this afghan below!
The black/red squares came from a Twilight Crafts swap in 2009. I made all the white ones to give it a checkered effect and to help the black/red blocks really stand out.
I crocheted all the blocks together with white yarn, then crocheted around with black. Once I changed to white yarn, I crocheted evenly around and then continued with the border, most of which is done in hdc. The finishing row is a reverse sc (aka crab stitch), which adds a really awesome ridged texture.
I really like the finished product and have decided that I will keep this one for myself. Quite a few of my friends participated in this swap and it makes me happy to have a little piece of their craftiness!

The Ugly Quilt, a quilting experiment gone wrong. I just could not make myself like this. I tried. Eventually, I just gave up and stitched the blocks together. Several people told me it was very striking. The two redeeming qualities of this quilt – it lay perfectly flat for quilting and it squared up exactly. I’m sure someone will love it, I was just very tired of looking at it.
Blue Granny – I love this ‘ghan. It is made of leftovers from Blue Bricks and the last couple of skeins of blue yarn in my stash.
Also? Picot edges make me happy.

The original version of this pattern was given to me by a friend as a hand written pattern. I lost that pattern for years, but continued to make the blanket, and when I finally found the pattern again, I realized I’d modified it significantly from the original version as I’d tried to work from memory. Oops!
Another name for this blanket could be “stash eater” because it loves yarn! It’s a very simple pattern that makes a squishy, thick and snuggly blanket.
The one pictured will be donated to The Linus Connection.
The blanket works up to be approximately 36″ wide. It looks great with wide or thin stripes, in variegated yarn or solid!
You’ll need:
Shell = (sc in next sc, ch 3, dc) in same st
Ch 130
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, skip next 2 ch, (sc in next ch, ch 3, dc) in same st. [sk next 2 ch ( )] to end of base ch, sc in last ch.
Row 2: ch 3, dc in same st, sk ch 3, (shell) in each sc across, sc in last ch 3 sp.
Repeat Row 2 for desired length.
For edging, continue pattern around by working (shell) in ch 3 spaces along sides and back of foundation row. Finish off.

Mmm, luscious pink strawberry ice cream. Soft pink with bits of brighter yumminess. That’s what I had in mind when working up this baby blanket pattern.

You’ll need:
Finishes approximately 36″
Note: Ch 3 counts as first dc throughout
hole-free center made using magic loop technique
Instructions:
Row 1: With Color A, use the magic loop* (also called magic ring) technique. [3 dc, 2 ch] four times on loop, join at the top of first dc with a sl st. Pull loop tight.
*you can also start this like a traditional granny square: ch 3 , 2dc, [ch 2, 3 dc], rep [ to ] 2 times, ch 2, join to the top of ch 3 with a sl st.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc across, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner], continue to dc across, repeating [ ] for corners, join with a sl st in the top of ch 3.
Row 3: Repeat row 2, join Color B at sl st.
Rows 4-6: Repeat Row 2, join Color C at sl st, end of row 6.
Rows 7-9: Repeat Row 2, join Color A at sl st, end of row 9.
Row 10 – 31: Repeat pattern (1 row of Color A, 3 rows of Color B, 3 colors of C) through row 31 (the last row will be Color A). At the end of row 31, join Color B in sl st. ch 1.
Note: Do not turn ch 32 or 33
Row 32: ch 1, sc in back loop of each dc. 3 sc in corner ch. Repeat around, joining Color C in sl st.
Row 33: ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc, in corner [sc, 2 sc, sc]. Continue sc in back loop around, repeating [ ] in corners, join with a sl st and finish off.

This is yet another baby blanket I designed specifically with The Linus Connection in mind. Linus receives the great majority of my crochet efforts and because crochet is so portable, I get a lot done. I crochet in the carpool line, when I watch telly or when I have to wait for an appointment. If my hands are busy, I tend to be happy!
Use up your scraps, go solid, variegated or ombre. Each works brilliantly with a wavy ‘ghan!
For the scrappy version, you’ll need:
Finished size is approximately 40″, depending on your gauge. This is a homey pattern and I don’t fuss about the gauge, as long as it’s crocheting up nicely.
Note: When changing colors, join new color with a sl just before you ch 3 for a new row.
ch 132
Row 1: 1 dc into third ch from hook and in the next three ch, *skip 2 ch, 1 dc into next 4 ch, ch 2, 1 dc in next 4 ch*. Repeat * to * until the last six ch. Skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next 3 ch, 2 dc in last ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 1 dc in first st, 1 dc in next 3 st, *sk 2 st, 1 dc in next 3 st, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) into ch 2 sp. 1 dc in next 3 st*. Repeat * to * until the last six ch. Skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next 3 ch, 2 dc in top of last dc. Ch 3, turn.
Pattern: Repeat row 2 until blanket is approximately 40″ long. Finish off.
For a more delicate pattern, try a lighter weight yarn with a smaller hook.

Ariel’s Blanket was made as a replacement for a special little girl that had loved her blanket to pieces.
Her mom found me online through my first crafty website, Jen’s Crochet & Crafts and we later met so she could show me the blanket and I could meet her daughter. I agreed to make it, if she’d pay for the yarn and make a donation to the blanket charity I volunteer for, The Linus Connection. She agreed and the replacement process began.
The blanket is a recreation made as close to the original design as possible. It was my great pleasure to crochet this for Ariel. It’s been at many years now, since I made Ariel’s Blanket. I hope she still has it, and loves it as much as she did the day I gave it to her!
Red Heart Baby Sport Pompadour Yarn: small
amount blue, yellow, green, peach & pink
(approx. 1 – 1½ oz.), 40 ounces white
For one square: small amount for center color,
approx. 2 oz white)
PC= Popcorn
Ch 3 counts as DC in PC st
Size “F” Hook
Finished Blanket is approximately 44″ x 54″
Row 1: Starting with center color, Ch 6, join with sl st. Ch 1, 12 sc in loop. Join with sl st.
Row 2: Ch 3, 4 dc in beg sc [drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of first dc, pull loop through to make first PC] ch 4, sk 1 sc, 5 DC in next sc, follow [ ], ch 4 around until you have 6 PC.
Row 3: ch 1, sc in same st. 7 dc in ch sp, sc in petal join st around. (6 “Petals”)
Row 4: ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, sc in next sc] around, join with beg sc with sl st.
Row 5: ch 3, 4 dc in first ch sp. [In next sc: Dc, ch 3, dc. In next ch sp: 4 dc. Dc in sc. In ch sp: 3 dc, ch 3, 3dc] Dc in sc, 4 dc in ch sp. Repeat [ ], join with sl st to top of beg ch 3. Finish off. (This seems very odd, but it works out!)
You should now have a square with equal sides, 9 stitches per side with a ch 3 in each corner.
Row 6: Join white in any corner sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in same corner space. Ch 1. {[Dc in each of the next 3 dc. Ch 1] Repeat [] to corner space. In next corner space, 3 dc ch 3, 3 dc,ch 1}, Repeat {} around. Join with sl st at beg ch 3.
You should now have 5 clusters of 3 dc with a chain sp between on each side with ch 3 in each corner.
Row 7 & 8: Sl st to corner sp ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc. {3 dc in ch sp to next corner. 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in corner}. Repeat {} around. Join with sl st at the top of beg ch 3.
Row 9: (do not sl st to corner) ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in each dc to corner. {[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in corner], 1 dc in each dc to corner}. Repeat {} around.
(for added variety, row 10 can also be in a contrasting color)
Row 10: ch 3, PC in next st, 1 dc, PC, 1 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in all corners), 1 DC, pc, 1 dc, PC around.
Row 11: ch 3, DC in each st around, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in corners).
Row 12: ch 1, sc in each st around, 3 sc in corners. Finish off.
FOR BLANKET PATTERN
Make 20 squares. Join squares 4×5 either with whip st or sc. Add border.
cluster = 3 dc, ch 2, sc in 1st ch, 3 dc
(Here, your cluster is 3 double crochets with 2 chain stitches, then you single crochet in the first chain stitch you just made. This makes a point in the middle of the cluster. You then make 3 more double crochets to finish the cluster.)
Join white in second sc of corner, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, sc in first ch, 3 dc, skip 1 sc, sc in next ch, (cluster, sk 1 sc, sc in next ch, cluster), around.
Each square should have 6 clusters, not counting corner clusters.
Join with sl st, finish off, weave in ends.
