There She Sews!

There she stitches!

Remember the lavender Kenmore?

The bobbin case came in the middle of the drama of my week, and there it sat for almost 36 hours before I had the wherewithal to even look at it.

Fortunately, I had one whole bobbin in my collection that fit the machine and it turns out, she sews just fine with all her pieces back together!

Lost & Found

My next simple piecing project is going to be the true test for this old gal. I can’t wait to really put her through her paces!

Use coupon code TACKETT right here on Sewhooked and in my Etsy Shop for 25% off your total order until August 31. This special coupon has been created as a fundraiser for my beloved and sick kitty, Tackett. Tackett is a regular visitor to Talk To Me Tuesday and even has his own Facebook page. The great majority of the patterns I’ve designed have come into life with Tackett sitting in my lap or on my feet.

Lavender Love Affair

Kenmore 158.523My spiffy “new” Kenmore 158.523

I spent almost 24 hours resisting the siren song of the lavender sewing machine before heading back to Goodwill to see if she was still there.

It was…I bought her.

Her…because she’s lavender!

Boy, does she ever weigh a ton! The machine came with a plastic case in good condition and has the power cord/foot control, but was missing a presser foot/screw and the bobbin case.  There was one cam already in place, but no other accessories. I have oodles of old Singer supplies, so I’ll have to see if I have any that will work with this beauty.

When I got her home and plugged in, the light didn’t come on and I got no response from the motor. I didn’t have time to play with, so I just set everything aside until I a little more time. Goodwill has a 48 hour return policy on electronics, so I figured, worse case scenario, I could take the lavender lady back.

After a little fiddling, I ended up cleaning the contacts for the power supply and the motor absolutely purrs! She needed a new light bulb, and I happened to have the right one on hand, so I popped it in.

I found a presser foot in my sewing stuff that fits just fine. All she needs now is a bobbin case and  I think we’ll be good to go!

With a little Google-fu, found the exact (and vintage!) bobbin case on Mule Wagon Sewing for $9, half of the cost of the actual machine! Once it gets here, I’ll let you know how she sews!

From the research I did online today, I think she’s from the mid-1960s. If anyone knows for sure, I’d love  a definite date!

Lavender Temptation

Kenmore Sewing MachineI freaking love old sewing machines.

LOVE.

I have three vintage Singers, and have had as many as five at one time.

What? I gave two of them away…and they have all been unbelievable bargains I found at thrift shops.

I saw this lavender Kenmore beauty at Goodwill today, and boy did I want to buy it.

I really, really did.

It was missing it’s foot & foot screw as well as the bobbin casing, so I didn’t buy it. I promised myself no more machines unless they came with all their parts. That followed buying a machine with no power cord and no foot control…

For $20, though…SO tempting.

So tempting, in fact, I’m contemplating checking in again tomorrow, just to see if it’s still there.

Seriously, folks, a lavender sewing machine! It was even cooler in person…

What do you think? Should I break my promise to myself and “adopt” this little beauty?

Free Patterns: All About Sewing, Revisited

sewing machine spool of thread

button jar
These three sewing-themed blocks were some of my first ever paper pieced blocks to draft. I had just started designing my own patterns and really wanted to make something that said “sewing.” I had seen similar blocks, of course. Jars and spools are pretty classic when it comes to quilting, but having just learned to draft, I wanted to draw my own versions.

The original pattern are six or seven years old, and have gotten their first revamp in a long, long time. Compare the original version of the Sewing Machine with the new version, and you can really see how much cleaner and easier to read my patterns have become over the years. It’s cool to me to have this documented evidence of my own evolution.

As time goes by, I plan to update as many of my older patterns as possible. Who knows, maybe even some of those patterns that have been locked away in the Sewhooked Vault will see the light of day again!

I hope you enjoy these patterns for what they are: classic, simple and representative of the craft we love!

Peace, Love, Pi

Peace, Love, Pi

During the craziness that was getting sewhooked.org and blog.sewooked.org consolidated into the Shiny New sewhooked.com, one of my newest designs, Peace, Love, Pi, slipped through the cracks of blog posting.

This spiffy new design was created to entertain my husband and son, both who love math and have great senses of humor. They love the design and once it’s quilted, it will quite possibly end up hanging in my husband’s office where he does magical things with computers all day long.

9 1/2″ X 21 1/2″

Includes 3 original

paper pieced patterns

plus sashing instructions.

One of the best parts about this pattern is it’s construction. It’s super simple, with 5″ (5.5″ unfinished) paper pieced patterns and simple sashing.
