12 For 2012

My UFO pile gets larger every year and I’ve decided that 2012 is the Year to Finish. I was thinking about this and trying to decide how to go about such a monumental task when my friend Kristel at WIP Girl mentioned that she wants to finish 12 projects in 12.

That lit a fire for me and I can’t thank her enough for the fantastic idea!!

The idea is this:

Choose 12 UFO projects to complete in 2012, earmarking one for each month. Number your projects so you can keep track: January will be 1/12, February 2/12, etc. My plan is to work on big projects and small projects on alternating months so I don’t get overwhelmed by how much I have to finish.

The goal is to have 12 completed projects by the end of 2012. When you finish a project, post about it anywhere else you like to share your crafty goodness, your blog, facebook, YouTube, etc.

If you don’t have 12 UFOs, then earmark any extra months for projects you’ve been wanting to start, keeping in mind that the idea is to have a finished project at the end of each month.

When you have of list of projects you are planning to tackle each month, share with your readers! I’ll be posting mine here on Sewhooked and sharing on my weekly vlog, Talk To Me Tuesday.

My Memories Giveaway!

When I was presented with the opportunity to play with fun new software AND give a copy of that software away to one of my readers, all for free, I thought it might be to good to be true.

Was it?

No, indeed!

My Memories is scrapbooking software. Now, I’ve never been much of a scrapbooker in real life, but I love digital photo manipulation. I’ved used online solutions through stores with photo processing and such to create cards and photo books, and I have to admit, this is way, way cooler. It’s a crazy versatile software that allows you to do all kinds of cool things with your photos.

I have oodles (and oodles!) of digital photographs. Up until about 2005, I kept them in tidy albums, organized by dates. Then this weird thing happened.

I got my first digital camera. ..

At first, I continued to have my photos printed, but eventually, I realized I was taking way too many pictures to do that. So I began archiving them on a multitude of discs, then eventually on an external hard drive. Have I gone back to dig out those discs and look at those photos? Do I regularly visit my million and one photo files?

Sadly, no. I have thousands of photos that are just sitting, collecting virtual dust instead of being easily accessible. So what the heck, why not try a little digital scrapbooking?

Of course, the first thing I did after downloading my spiffy new software was to download all the FREEBIES! Free paper designs, templates, cards, gift tags and, and, and! What? I like free!

Once the freebies were installed, I started playing. Papers and embellishments and text, oh my…

My darling daughter’s Sweet 16 Birthday.

Once I started playing with My Memories, I had a really, really hard time stopping. It’s super easy to use, and after just a little trial and error, I got the hang of where most everything was. There are all kinds of cool embellishments and such built in to the software (note the spiffy pencil and clips in the image below) and the software accesses your font library, so if you have a million and one fonts like I do (DaFont free fonts for the win!), the text options are endless.

See, I told you I couldn’t stop! I’m an absolute novice here, but I’m super happy with these results. There are SO MANY FUN TOYS!

Name That Quilt!

I love coming up with creative titles for my projects, but even my name bank runs out from time to time. The above quilt is 12 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ and is entirely paper pieced. It’s the latest design in my wall hanging series for the Sewhooked shop. The pattern itself tested, edited and ready to go. As soon as I have a name, it will be ready to sell!

This is where you come in! For the next week, add your title idea in comments. I’ll put up a poll including all the suggestions* and the one with the most votes is what I’ll use for the new pattern! The person that suggests the winning name will receive the very first hardcopy version of this pattern and a Sewhooked button!

Free Pattern: Contessa’s Canoe

The following picture was posted by a friend on Facebook, along with a request for some help finding or figuring out the pattern. The photo poster, Contessa, states that she has it from a 1970s quilting magazine. She was looking for any information on the pattern, but most specifically, she really wanted to make it and didn’t know where to start!

Well, as these things sometimes do, it caught my fancy and it was a nice 15 minute project while I ate my breakfast. I took some liberties since I had no size or color information. My version makes a 6″ block, but the individual pieces would be easy to enlarge and I’m sure it’d make a gorgeous 12″ block.

Just for fun, a mock up how the pattern repeats.

Contessa’s Canoe – Free Paper Pieced Pattern

Unlike most of my patterns, this one does not include seam allowance. That was partly for time and partly so it will all fit on one page. I have a super easy way of adding seam allowance to any paper pieced pattern right here.
