Free Pattern Friday – Stop Voldemort

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday!

In honor of twenty years of Harry Potter and my ongoing love of all things Harry, I’m celebrating with Harry Potter-inspired fandom patterns through July!

All of my (always free!) Harry Potter patterns in one place.

I’m almost positive I haven’t shared a new HP-inspired pattern since the reboot of The Project of Doom on Fandom in Stitches in 2015. Even so, I have continued to doodle and think about the series because there will never be any stopping that!

stop voldemort original.png

STOP Voldemort Sign (formerly located outside a high school in CA, photographer unknown)

Today’s pattern is a little bit different than my usual fandom-fare as it is based on an image seen in our very own muggle world (above). If you’re part of the Harry Potter fandom, you may remember this image going viral some years ago. While I don’t condone the vandalism, I do appreciate the sentiment and offer it here in fabric and with the possibility to create a version of your very own without committing a misdemeanor crime. 😉

STOP Voldemort is 10″ (10 1/2″ unfinished) and is entirely paper pieced. I highly recommend using an Add-A-Quarter or Add-An-Eighth ruler for accuracy. You can find more useful paper piecing links here.

You’ll also find today’s pattern posted to Fandom in Stitches, sister-site to Sewhooked exclusively for free fandom patterns designed by a plethora of amazing designers!

Two New Freebies!

The very lovely and talented Jennifer Rowles put together the amazing Smartphone Quilt Along, now in it’s entirety over on Fandom in Stitches.

As with many of our events on Fandom in Stitches, we ended this one by throwing out an invite to our community to share supplemental designs for the project.

I thought it would be fun to design two of my favorite crafty apps to share with our community.

Both of these patterns are free and can also be found on Fandom in Stitches today as part of the #SMQAL Design Invitational!

Robert Kaufman Quilt Calculator is my go-to app for calculating binding. It has oodles of other features, but that is definitely my favorite!

This free pattern is 10″ Paper Pieced.

Tested version by Vanda Chittenden. Thanks, Vanda!

The Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Store App has been a lifesaver! I used to always forget my coupons, but now they are always available at the touch of a finger. Woo, technology!

This free pattern is also 10″ Paper Pieced.

Making Picard So

Stylized TNG Uniform

a free  6″ x 8″ paper pieced pattern

If you’ve been keeping up with my weekly Talk to to Me Tuesday videos, then you know that I recently had the great pleasure of creating a surprise swap for Vanda, TTMTer and Fandom in Stitches Designer. Because she and I are both big Star Trek fans and I decided to create a fun wall hanging out of one of my favorite hand embroidery pieces, the Picard Quote Sampler.

Picard Sampler for Vanda

I designed a simple paper pieced block to combine with my Picard Quote Samper. The two blocks together create a stylized Captain’s uniform for a simple but effective wall hanging. Ack! I love it so much!

We’re Doomed

C3P0 Cushion

I have the great fortune of being surrounded by people that love many of the same things I do. When I began to contemplate the birthday of my brother-in-law, I knew I wanted to start with my C3P0 stitch that I designed earlier this year for The Summer of Stitching.

Enter this fun pillow, made with an 8 1/2″ center, 2 1/2″ & 3 1/2″ borders plus triangles to make it interesting. The pillow front is backed with muslin and I used some straight line stitching to give it a quilted look.

I gifted this pretty yesterday and couldn’t wait to share! Look for it tomorrow on Talk To me Tuesday, along with a giant pile of blankets I’ve been working on for The Linus Connection!

Get the C3P0 stitch for free right here. Find more of my patterns like this right here on Sewhooked and on Fandom in Stitches.

Jack and Few Other Thing

Union Jack, paper pieced

Union Jack

5″ x 8″ paper pieced

a free pattern designed for Fandom In Stitches

One of the great joys of running a fandom website like Fandom In Stitches is the never ending variety of requests. On any given day, there are over 100 requests in the spreadsheet that the FiS Designers share.

This freebie is one such pattern.

I have to admit, the Union Jack, as well as a whole slew of other flags, is included in the patterns that come with EQ7, the design software that I use to design most of my patterns. There are actually a ton of patterns in the software that can be used, adapted, etc. What I did with this was to change the size, color and number the pattern and make it available as a PDF so it’s free and easy to use.

The Union Jack is just the tip of the iceberg for my recent free design work. I’ve been furiously going through my older patterns and updating them one at a time. You’ll find those under Free Patterns with the notation “updated 2014.”

I started designing at the end of 2004 or so, and many of my patterns haven’t been updated since then. Back in those days, I drew everything out in Photoshop. Those early patterns are still quite usable, but they aren’t as clean and easy to read as my current patterns. I suppose it’s obvious to say that I’ve improved a lot in the ten years I’ve been designing quilt patterns! With that in mind, I’m updating everything to fit with my current style and to make it much easier for you to use.

Here are just a few of the updates you’ll find. Click on the image to go to the pattern. For even more updates, check out Free Patterns . These will also be added to Craftsy, as time permits.

If you love my free patterns, then I’d ask if you’d very kindly considering buying a pattern or two from my Craftsy shop. Selling patterns is how I am able to continue to do and share all the things I do and I appreciate each and every sale!

Summer 2014, Stitched

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

The Summer of Stitching has concluded on Fandom In Stitches!

Next week, there will be a BIG wrap-up post that includes the winner of the Free FiS t-shirt as well as every pattern submitted for the event. Be sure to stop by Fandom In Stitches on Wednesday for that!

At the beginning of the summer, I challenged to design one new pattern for each SoS theme. There were 12 in all, and in the end, I’d designed 15 patterns, though I only stitched 14 of them.

Underachiever, right?! 😉

All of my designs are entirely free, all are hand embroidered and each design works up to approximately 7″ (my blocks are trimmed to 8 1/2″ after stitching).

I hope you find one among the lot that you’ll enjoy!

All of these patterns and more can be found under Free Fandom Patterns:

Still Stitching!

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

I’m a little behind on sharing my last two designs for Fandom In Stitches’s Summer of Stitching! Be sure to stop by next week for the final installment: I ❤ Disney!

C3P0 - We're Doomed
C3P0 – We’re Doomed
(with bonus quote – “Let the Wookiee Win”)
7″ embroidered
C3P0 was always my favorite Star Wars character. I love how pessimistic he is and how much he depends on R2D2 without even realizing it. When it came time to design a Star Wars block, he was the first thing that popped in my mind.
Game of Thrones: The Eons
7″ embroidered
I’m a bit behind on Game of Thrones, having only read the books once and only watching the first season of the show. My daughter is currently working her way through the books and as she and I both agree that dragons are one of the best parts of any fantasy novel, I designed this block for her!
Get the free pattern for both designs by clicking on the name under the photo.

This month, ALL photos of projects made from Sewhooked patterns, including Paper Piecing Vintage, shared with the Sewhooked flickr group will be entered to win a copy of Jack Leaves The Light On! Winner announced next week!

Make It Sew

7″ embroidered
It’s no secret that I love my fandoms!
It should also, by now, not be a secret that I love Star Trek.
My very first website was a Star Trek fan site, way back in the early internet days of 1996. Seriously, 1996. I wrote the HTML in Notepad and hosted it through my ISP. It was back in the day of Geocities and entire pages consisting entirely of links. I still remember creating my first animated .gif: the Voyager ship flying across my website, and how unbelievably proud I was of that.
My, how times of changed! Fortunately, my love of fandom has not and since then, it’s way cooler to be a geek. Who knew that would ever happen!
To celebrate Star Trek on Summer of Stitching, I created a Picard Quote sampler of some of my favorite utterances from the man himself. The pattern is free for personal & non-profit use. I do hope you’ll enjoy it!
