Let’s face it, when I get ready to sew, paper piecing is what I love best.

There’s this other thing, too: I’ve always wanted to make a vintage-inspired sampler quilt.

After years of contemplating the idea of paper piecing vintage blocks and considering what blocks I personally would most like to include in a quilt like this, the idea has solidified.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival: The Body In The Library Wall Hanging

The Body in the Library, a 17″ x 25″ wall hanging

Welcome to my first post for Amy’s Creative Side’s twice-annual Blogger’s Quilt Festival! First post? Yes, that’s right! I will be entering two quilts this year!

The timing of this particular festival could not be better as my Wall Hanging entry, The Body in the Library, was just finished earlier this month!

For weeks I’d been wracking my brain for an idea for the perfect birthday gift for Jewells, my best friend of almost 20 years.

While thinking about things I know for sure she enjoys, Agatha Christie came to mind.

On a whim, I began Googling.

Then I found this:

Immediately, I knew it was The One. This was what I was looking for and it HAD to be a quilt; in fact, it had to be THE birthday quilt!

Don’t the graphics just shout QUILT!?

Within moments of finding this image, I’d fired up EQ7 and begun drafting.

In approximately two days, I designed, paper pieced, hand embroidered, pieced, free motion quilted, bound & labeled this little gem.

The shelves of the quilt are entirely paper pieced. These three shelves contain more than 36 pattern pieces. Not pieces of fabric, but actual pattern pieces!

I straight-line quilted around the books and free-motion quilted the shelves, border and background, all on my Baby Lock Quest Plus.

“Agatha Christie” is hand embroidered using DMC in a font called Alpaca 54. “by” was drawn by me.

The back of the quilt shows the quilting much better than the front!

You can also see the tabs I created for hanging. To make them, I fold a 3″ square in half on the diagonal and stitch them onto the corners when attaching the binding. Simply place a dowel rod in the pockets and it’s ready to hang! The best way I’ve found to do this is by using two 3M Command wire hooks placed approximately 6″ apart. The label is a larger square created the same way as the pockets at the top.

The Body in the Library is a Miss Marple mystery story. According to Freaky Trigger, this particular cover is the 1942 Australian Collins Crime Club edition.

While organizing the #TFiOS Design Challenge over on Fandom In Stitches, I could not resist designing a couple of patterns myself.

Ehem.

The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time it was placed into my hot little hands.

As well as being a beautifully written, it is also an extremely quotable book. With that in mind, I created two versions of the same image, both just waiting for Your Words Here.

The design on the above left will work either for applique or for hand embroidery.

The design on the above right is paper pieced, but will also work just fine if you’d like to embroider the clouds after piecing.

And now, a couple of my favorite quotes, grabbed from GoodReads.

Jack Leaves The Light On, $6 on Craftsy

How about a fun new Halloween-themed table runner pattern? This set is SUPER easy to piece and crazy versatile!

Just need the blocks? Use them for whatever you like!

Want a quick table runner? Piece the three blocks, add borders as shown in the pattern and you’re good to go!

I shared a Jack-O-Lantern block in my video yesterday and mentioned that the pattern was coming soon.

How’s this for soon?!

I originally designed this fun piece for a magazine. They passed on the pattern and it’s been collecting dust in my sewing room ever since.

Tis the season for Trick-or-Treat and what better way to decorate than a fun table runner?

Pattern includes two, full-color 8″ block patterns and instructions to create the table runner shown above.

Want a wall hanging instead? Simply piece the blocks vertically! The same instructions will apply to the wall hanging shown on the left as the original table runner. Slightly more fabric will be needed for the example on the right.

How about a longer table runner? Just add more blocks! I love a little versatility!

I Want My Mummy on Craftsy

Nah, I’m not having a nervous breakdown from all the stuff on my proverbial plate!

It’s the end of September, which means my favorite month, OCTOBER, is almost here! Cooler weather, soup, the possibility of wearing my favorite sweater and and and…HALLOWEEN!

After the recent epic revamp of Sunbonnet Sue’s Magical Friends, a few “friends” seemed to be missing! Notably among them was a mummy for Monster Madness.

So here he is as a bonus pattern not included in the original set: I Want My Mummy!
