TTMT #480 – Next Subject

I apologize for the All Over The Place-ness for today’s video. Take insomnia, add an all-day road trip, and being busy all around, and this is, apparently, what happens.

Welcome back to our Paper Piecing Vintage Quilt Along (#PPV2017)!

2017 Fat Quarter Lotto

Stop back by tomorrow for the 3rd Annual Fat Quarter Lotto Drawing,

to be shared “live” on Talk to Me Tuesday!

A reminder of how this works:

PPV was my 2014 Block of the Month. This project was inspired by old-fashioned, hand-pieced quilt blocks. Because I LOVE paper piecing, I couldn’t help but create my own versions of traditional patterns I love using my favorite technique.

Quilting along with us is easy! The Paper Piecing Vintage quilt pattern already exists, so you don’t have to anxiously await each pattern to be released.

We’re making this quilt together, one block at a time, as a group. We’ll be making two blocks a month. I’ll prompt you on the second and fourth Monday to remind you which block to work on next. With a little work and a little luck, we’ll have a finished quilt top by the end of June!

Get the completed quilt pattern (more info below) from CRAFTSY or ETSY for $10 (previously $12). If you already own this pattern, you are ready to go!

Individual blocks now available by popular demand: If you want to make just one or two blocks from the set, I am releasing these patterns individually as we go. (Link to purchase Block 8 below.)

The following is the August 2014 block (Block 8 for us) made for my 1930’s vintage fabric-inspired version of this quilt (above).

Today’s pattern, Block 8 (August 2014), is Caught in the Web. You can find it beginning on page 37 in Paper Piecing Vintage, or you can purchase JUST this block pattern here.

All patterns for PPV are 6″ & 12″ (w/o seam allowance). The size you make is up to you.

The vintage version (above) is from my 2014 PPV.

My 2017 PPV Halloween Quilt Block

Block 08 - Caught in the Web

I was lucky enough to have just enough of this fantastic orange spider print to make this block. The stripes were fussy cut to add a little more movement. I ♥ it!

Eight blocks in…we’re getting closer to the end!

Now is a great time to start cutting out those piano keys and 6″ blocks for cornerstones (optional, of course!).

This is my color inspiration, created in EQ (subject to change as I quilt along!).

Since I’m using a lot of Halloween scraps, I’m also cutting the piano keys as I go from the leftover fabrics from each block. It will be a huge time saver at the end!

If you’d like to do a little planning, too, there is a coloring page included in the complete pattern on page 64.

Making The Best of It

Hand Quilting In Progress

Oh my, have I ever been sick the last couple of days!

A stuffy nose crept up on me Thursday evening and by Friday morning, I was a sick mess. Stuffy nose, fever, aches and pains.

How fun!

In an effort to not spend my long weekend as a complete lump, I pulled out a hand quilting project I started ages ago. I had to go all the way back to my 2010 UFO list to find where I first started talking about this quilt.

Really? 2010? Come on Jennifer, get a move on!

Grannie's Signature Quilt
This is my granmother’s signature quilt, before quilting and before I added the border.

This quilt inspired the Extra Credit block for the Project of Doom.

You may remember that I’ve worked on other quilt tops that came from Grannie’s house after she passed away.

Grannie's Trunk Quilt
Grannie’s Trunk Quilt

Grannie's Nine Patch
Grannie’s 9-Patch

I did, apparently, at least get the borders on Grannie’s Signature Quilt and start quilting in 2010, as evidenced by my 2010 UFO Round-up.

I’m keeping the quilting super simple. Grannie was not fancy and everything she did or made was practical and frugal, and I’d like the quilting to reflect that. I’m planning to bind the quilt in muslin.

It sure would be nice if this quilt did not make it to my 2012 UFO list!

Back to my tissues…and my hand quilting.
