Summer 2014, Stitched

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

The Summer of Stitching has concluded on Fandom In Stitches!

Next week, there will be a BIG wrap-up post that includes the winner of the Free FiS t-shirt as well as every pattern submitted for the event. Be sure to stop by Fandom In Stitches on Wednesday for that!

At the beginning of the summer, I challenged to design one new pattern for each SoS theme. There were 12 in all, and in the end, I’d designed 15 patterns, though I only stitched 14 of them.

Underachiever, right?! 😉

All of my designs are entirely free, all are hand embroidered and each design works up to approximately 7″ (my blocks are trimmed to 8 1/2″ after stitching).

I hope you find one among the lot that you’ll enjoy!

All of these patterns and more can be found under Free Fandom Patterns:

Paper Piecing Vintage: September

Paper Piecing Vintage: September

Hello, September!

We’re nearing the end! With this installment, there are only THREE more months to come in Paper Piecing Vintage!

Today, I share a very traditional design, Beggar’s Block. If you’ve ever pieced this block before, you will find the paper pieced version goes together a bit differently, and I hope, easy peasy to get all those points!

As with all the blocks from PPVBeggar’s Block is entirely paper pieced and both 6″ and 12″ patterns are included.

Paper Piecing Vintage: September

Beggar’s Block by Jennifer Ofenstein (sewhooked.com)

Already registered? Download your updated BOM file now!

Save some time by following these bonus directions:

  • For both sizes, save time by cutting strips of fabric 1/2″ to 3/4″ wider than the template. You can then sub-cut pieces a little bit longer. For example: for the 12″ block, cut 2″ strips, sub-cut into 2″ x 5″.
  • Triangles can be sub cut from squares. For example: for the 12″ block, cut 16 – 2 3/4″ squares, sub-cut into half-square triangles (32 sqt).
  • Save time by chain piecing!
  • When piecing final pattern, line up the center square to get perfect points.
  • Have fun!

Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Block
Don’t forget to sent in your 6″ signature block for the Paper Piecing Vintage Signature Quilt! Lots of great blocks have already arrived…a bit thanks to everyone that has already sent in their block.

If you have not yet shared yours, I will be accepting Signature Blocks until December 31, 2014. See your pattern for details and check out our Facebook Group for photos of blocks received so far!

Haven’t signed up for Paper Piecing Vintage yet? Registration for the entire year is just $12. That’s 12 patterns in two sizes (plus the occasional bonus!), entirely paper pieced for one awesome price! All patterns for the year to date are included when you download. Upcoming patterns will be added for you to download the first of each month in 2014.

Today is your last chance to share photos of your quilt blocks & projects made from Sewhooked patterns, including Paper Piecing Vintage. Still Stitching!

Summer of Stitching 2014, A Design Invitational on fandominstitches.com

I’m a little behind on sharing my last two designs for Fandom In Stitches’s Summer of Stitching! Be sure to stop by next week for the final installment: I ❤ Disney!

C3P0 - We're Doomed
C3P0 – We’re Doomed
(with bonus quote – “Let the Wookiee Win”)
7″ embroidered
C3P0 was always my favorite Star Wars character. I love how pessimistic he is and how much he depends on R2D2 without even realizing it. When it came time to design a Star Wars block, he was the first thing that popped in my mind.
Game of Thrones: The Eons
7″ embroidered
I’m a bit behind on Game of Thrones, having only read the books once and only watching the first season of the show. My daughter is currently working her way through the books and as she and I both agree that dragons are one of the best parts of any fantasy novel, I designed this block for her!
Get the free pattern for both designs by clicking on the name under the photo.
Looking for all my fandom patterns? You can find them on the Free Fandom Patterns and under Free Harry Potter Patterns! Visit Fandom in Stitches by even more free designs by a plethora of designers!

This month, ALL photos of projects made from Sewhooked patterns, including Paper Piecing Vintage, shared with the Sewhooked flickr group will be entered to win a copy of Jack Leaves The Light On! Winner announced next week!

TTMT #274 – 25 to 300

In case you missed it, here’s  a tutorial from last week on Enlarging and Reducing patterns using Adobe Reader!

How to Enlarge & Reduce Quilt Patterns with Adobe Reader

how to enlarge reduce patterns

Edited to add: This tutorial was written in 2014. It may not work with all versions of Adobe Reader. You can also use the chart below to enlarge patterns on printers that include that feature. Thanks!

Today, I’m sharing a rare mirror post with my fandom site, Fandom In Stitches, but this is more than worth posting twice.

I read and answer a lot (and by a lot, I mean tons!) of email for both Sewhooked and Fandom in Stitches and the question I answer most often is this: How do I resize a quilt block pattern?

The easiest way to ENLARGE or REDUCE a quilt block pattern is to print it as a poster using Adobe Reader and the chart below.

If I don’t have the size you need, I’ve got you covered! Here’s the formula used to get the size you need:

enlrage formula sewhooked

ENLARGE OR REDUCE PATTERNS USING THIS SCALE
Pattern Size Needed
4″ 5″ 6″ 7″ 8″ 9″ 10″ 11″ 12″
Pattern Size
4″ 100% 125% 150% 175% 200% 225% 250% 275% 300%
5″ 80% 100% 120% 140% 160% 180% 200% 220% 240%
6″ 67% 83% 100% 117% 133% 150% 167% 183% 200%
7″ 52% 71% 88% 100% 114% 128% 143% 152% 171%
8″ 50% 62% 75% 87% 100% 112% 125% 137% 150%
9″ 44% 55% 66% 77% 88% 100% 111% 122% 133%
10″ 40% 50% 60% 70% 80% 90% 100% 110% 120%
11″ 36% 45% 54% 63% 72% 81% 90% 100% 109%
12″ 34% 42% 50% 59% 67% 78% 84% 93% 100%

Follow these steps and use the chart below to make it even easier:

  1. Download the PDF quilt block pattern file.
  2. Open pattern in Adobe Reader.
  3. Open the Print dialog (shown below) by clicking the printer icon.
  4. Choose which Pages to Print. In the example “All” is chosen, but if there is an instruction page, skip that and just enlarge the pattern pages. It may be least confusing to enlarge one page at a time.
  5. Under Paper Sizing & Handling, choose Poster (see image).
  6. Determine the starting Pattern Size and the chart below to determine what percentage to enlarge to Pattern Size Needed. For example, to print a 5″ pattern at 10″, Tile Scale (see below) will need to be 200%.
  7. Print these instructions for easy reference.

Big thanks to Fandom In Stitches Designer Addie Clark for sharing the poster printing tip over on the Fandom In Stitches Facebook Group.

When I shared the Kitty Vending Machine on Friday, I mentioned back to school and all the busyness that entails. Well, it seems that during the crazy last week, I forgot to share my Summer of Stitching design for the I ❤ Musicals theme!

I now have one kiddo back to university for her second year and one about to return to high school for his junior year, so life is starting to calm down a tiny bit. Now I’m here at 7:30 in the morning to share!

I had a lot of fun stitching this one and have been singing Moses Supposes off and on ever since! Singing in the Rain was a favorite of both of my kids when they were little and it’s still one of our favorite family movies.

Need a song stuck in your head today? Here you go!

I’ll be back tomorrow with Talk to Me Tuesday and (hopefully) my new design for this week’s theme on Fandom In Stitches… Star Wars!

DIY Kitty Vending Machine

We’re a bit busy around here this week getting ready for back to school and all the things it entails, but I do have one small, fun thing to share: 10 seconds of cat video!

This is our newest family member, Rose (adopted at the end of March this year), fetching a treat for herself. She gets treats every day to help with her shedding, and she can gobble up her entire ration in about 2 seconds and come out wanting more!

I found this on Pinterest and unlike most projects I’ve pinned, I actually made this one! Rose is a treat gobbler, so we thought anything that would slow her down would be a good thing.

I was able to find a blog that mentioned the craft, but not one that credits who came up with it.

This month, ALL photos of projects made from Sewhooked patterns, including Paper Piecing Vintage, shared with the Sewhooked flickr group will be entered to win a copy of Jack Leaves The Light On!

Have a great weekend! I’ll be back full-swing soon!
