St. Patrick Shamrock!

Are you wearing green today? Even more importantly, do you have green fabric?

Good, because I have a brand new free paper pieced pattern to share with you!

I thought a fun and simple Shamrock pattern would be just the thing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

5″ paper pieced Shamrock Pattern

After years of hand-drafting all my patterns in Photoshop, I’ve been learning EQ7. The learning curve is finally getting smaller and I still prefer to color and number my own patterns in Photoshop, but I have discovered that one of my favorite things to do with EQ7 are fun quilt layouts! This one is super simple, but I hope it inspires you to create a little Shamrock quilt of your own!

Super Long Spiral Boa

Every once in a while, I get an idea that will not leave me alone. I have a friend named Wendy. She loves rainbows. LOVES. Like loves adores worships…you get the picture. I had wanted to make her something rainbow-worthy for a while, when I came across a skein of Red Heart Kids in Crayon, which inspired me to create an awesome, HUGE scarf for her.

I wanted the project to be a surprise, but I also wanted her to know I had a project in the works. Yeah, I’m funny like that. I shared this photo as a teaser!

This is part guidelines, part pattern. It’s super simple and works up really quickly.

Super Long Spiral Boa

~4 oz of worsted weight yarn
Size H or I hook

Loosely cochet an RLC (Really Long Chain). Mine was about 6′ long and reached to my knees. Yours can be shorter or longer.

Row 1 – sc in to the third ch from the hook, and in each ch across. Chain 3, turn

Row 2 – 4 DC in the same st as the turning ch, 5 DC in each st across.

Finish off.

See, I told you it was easy!

When you get done, your spiral is likely to not be 100% spirally. Not to worry! Find a place to hang your scarf…a hook, a clothesline, your bff, etc. Working from one end of the scarf to the other, make sure all the spirals, well, spiral! It might take a few minutes, but it will be worth your effort.

Carpool Dishcloth

Recently, I’ve been working on dishcloths for a dishcloth swap among my friends on Livejournal. While digging through my patterns, I found a scrap of paper from around 2000 that had instructions I’d scribbled for a dishcloth.

Once I worked the pattern up, I realized it’s not just a dishcloth, but one of the favorites I’ve been using in my kitchen for years!

I’m naming this easy-peasy project “Carpool Dishcloth” because I can make one in it’s entirety as I wait for my two kids at their two different schools. I sit in my car with my windows down and crochet while I wait. If you follow me on twitter, you probably have seen my carpool craft photos!

Made using Peaches and Creme cotton yarn – the pink/black/white dishcloth is Black Cherry, the other colorway is Sunflower.

Carpool Dishcloth

Size H Hook

worsted cotton yarn

ch 36

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch fr hook; ch 1, sk 1, [sc in next ch, ch1, sk 1, sc in next ch] [across]

Row 2: ch 1 turn, sc in 2nd ch fr hook; ch 1, sk 1 [sc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1, sc in next ch] [across].

Repeat row 2 for pattern until dishcloth is approximately square.

To add a border, continue the pattern around, making a sc, ch 1 sc in each corner and making sure to skip rows as you work down the sides, work pattern in the back side of sc on the foundation row and up the other side. Finish off.

It’s Bigger On The Inside

Free TARDIS paper pieced pattern, designed by me
and tested (as shown) by the ever awesome Shae.

Oh, fandom quilting, how do I love thee?

Bigger on the inside, that’s how!

In a fit of I Am A Fan, I made this a highly detailed TARDIS. I designed this pattern to be a 6″ block, but I would recommend enlarging it even bigger to work on, just for sanity’s sake. Shae made her’s 6″ and it worked out beautifully.

Why is the pattern purple? No idea. I drafted it back in May of 2009 and then it got lost amongst my files. When I unearthed it a couple of weeks ago, I realized it just needed numbering and separating. My guess is I had some really good wine and thought the purple was blue…

Tire for Hire

Back in July, Katrina sent me the above image and told me she has a car enthusiast in the family.

Between my family, working, teaching, volunteering and designing patterns for my shop, my schedule has gotten pretty crazy. The result of that is that I don’t usually take many requests anymore unless it’s something I think others might be interested in making as well. Highly specialized requests fall under the category of “commission,” but from time to time, I still create freebies (like Contessa’s Canoe).

I mean, seriously, this is a tire! How many quilters out there might need a tire to throw into their auto enthusiasts quilt? At least a few is my thinking, and, Sewhooked started as a free website, and I like to keep the free content coming as much as possible.

I told Katrina about my crazy summer schedule and promised to get back to her. Last night, a glass of wine and I sat and worked it out. Thanks for your patience, Katrina, I hope the pattern works for you…and hopefully for a few of my other readers as well!

Way Back Craft: Teeny Goblet of Fire

Once Upon A Time, I entered a Challenge. It was called The Little Tiny Challenge. I was beaten soundly by a tiny fast food meal made of real food, though I did come in second (even though second was hundreds of votes from first!).

Here’s my original post made on craftser way back in April of 2006.

Free Pattern: Contessa’s Canoe

The following picture was posted by a friend on Facebook, along with a request for some help finding or figuring out the pattern. The photo poster, Contessa, states that she has it from a 1970s quilting magazine. She was looking for any information on the pattern, but most specifically, she really wanted to make it and didn’t know where to start!

Well, as these things sometimes do, it caught my fancy and it was a nice 15 minute project while I ate my breakfast. I took some liberties since I had no size or color information. My version makes a 6″ block, but the individual pieces would be easy to enlarge and I’m sure it’d make a gorgeous 12″ block.

Just for fun, a mock up how the pattern repeats.

Contessa’s Canoe – Free Paper Pieced Pattern

Unlike most of my patterns, this one does not include seam allowance. That was partly for time and partly so it will all fit on one page. I have a super easy way of adding seam allowance to any paper pieced pattern right here.
