Free Pattern Friday – Perennial Pleasures

free-pattern-friday

Over the years, I’ve designed a lot of patterns, some for myself, some for friends or events. If I were to guess (which I totally am!), I’d say I have as many (or more!) free patterns as I do for sale patterns. It might not be the best business strategy, but it satisfies my need to share. Your pattern purchases keep me in fabric and out of trouble, so I don’t have much to complain about. 😉

To make a long story short, I thought it would be fun to feature some of the many, many free patterns I’ve designed over the years, with a smattering of new ones thrown in. Because I’m a sucker for alliteration, we’ll do it on Fridays.

Free Pattern Friday has a nice ring to it!

PhotoGrid_1485531859245.png

Originally designed for the Paper Pieced Pattern-A-Day Garden Party Blog Hop, hosted right here on Sewhooked back in 2012, Perennial Pleasures seems like a great place to start. Originally shared on my birthday, this 10″ block includes pattern pieces for a butterfly or a glass of wine, the choice is up to you!

PPV 2017 Quilt Along Block 2

Posts on this blog post contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support. ♥

2017 quilt along.jpg

Welcome back to our Paper Piecing Vintage Quilt Along (#PPV2017)!

A little explanation::

PPV was my 2014 Block of the Month. This project was inspired by old-fashioned, hand-pieced quilt blocks. Because I LOVE paper piecing, I couldn’t help but create my own versions of traditional patterns I love using my favorite technique.

Quilting along with us is easy! The Paper Piecing Vintage quilt pattern already exists, so you don’t have to anxiously await each pattern to be released.

We’re making this quilt together, one block at a time, as a group. We’ll be making two blocks a month. I’ll prompt you on the second and fourth Monday to remind you which block to work on next. With a little work and a little luck, we’ll have a finished quilt top by the end of June!

Get the completed quilt pattern (more info below) from CRAFTSY or ETSY for $10 (previously $12). If you already own this pattern, you are ready to go!

You’ve asked, and it’s happening…if you want to make just one or two blocks from the set, I am releasing these patterns individually as we go. (Link to purchase Block 2 below.)

The following is the February block (Block 2 for us) made for my 1930’s vintage fabric-inspired version of this quilt (above).

Today’s pattern, Block 2 (February 2014), is Come Fly Away. You can find it beginning on page 7 in Paper Piecing Vintage, or you can purchase JUST this block pattern here.

All patterns for PPV are 6″ & 12″ (w/o seam allowance). The size you make is up to you.

The vintage version (above) is from my 2014 PPV.

My 2017 PPV Halloween quilt block.

This week’s block includes some Halloween scraps I’ve saved for ages! If you look closely at the green fabric, you’ll see that there are witch’s undergarments in there. Do I love this version of Come Fly Away? YES I DO!

for me.JPG

This is my color inspiration, created in EQ (subject to change as I quilt along!).

Since I’m using a lot of Halloween scraps, I’m also cutting the piano keys as I go from the leftover fabrics from each block. It will be a huge time saver at the end!

If you’d like to do a little planning, too, there is a coloring page included in the complete pattern on page 64.

♥ ♥ ♥ GET THE MARCH PATTERN ♥ ♥ ♥

It’s lucky March and today I have two more of My Favorite Things to share with you: Scissors & a Rotary Cutter. No quilter’s supplies would be complete without these two beauties cutting tools.

Pattern document includes two – 6″ & 12″ fully color paper pieced patterns as well as sewing order for both blocks.

My scissors and rotary cutters.JPG

Here are (most!) of my favorite cutting tools. I have a few more goodies tucked away in my “to go” sewing kit, including my first ever rotary cutter, a Fiskar gifted to me by my quilter Mom.

I keep a 45mm Olfa for paper and one for fabric, moving my old blade from fabric to paper until it’s given all it’s got! The third cutter is used for specialty blades.

Time for a new #olfa blade! I retire down...old fabric blade becomes paper piecing blade. When that one is shot, it goes in an old powder compact. When it's time to toss, I tape the whole thing closed to (hopefully!) avoid damaging anyone.

Safety Tip: Store old rotary blades in a container. When it’s full, tape it up before disposing.

Making Picard So

Stylized TNG Uniform

a free  6″ x 8″ paper pieced pattern

If you’ve been keeping up with my weekly Talk to to Me Tuesday videos, then you know that I recently had the great pleasure of creating a surprise swap for Vanda, TTMTer and Fandom in Stitches Designer. Because she and I are both big Star Trek fans and I decided to create a fun wall hanging out of one of my favorite hand embroidery pieces, the Picard Quote Sampler.

Picard Sampler for Vanda

I designed a simple paper pieced block to combine with my Picard Quote Samper. The two blocks together create a stylized Captain’s uniform for a simple but effective wall hanging. Ack! I love it so much!

A Very Special Monday

Alida (tweloquilting.blogspot.com) recreated one of my later mother-in-law's stained glass pieces as a quilt for my birthday. I'm absolutely overwhelmed with emotion. #paperpiecing #gift #tweloq

Over the weekend, I received an unexpected parcel in the mail from Alida over on Tweety Loves Quilting.

There were many wonderful things in the parcel, with one very special one tied with a ribbon. When I opened it, there was a beautiful wall hanging inside:

Stained Glass Quilt by TweLoQ

I looked at the gorgeous quilt and I knew it reminded me of something, but I couldn’t put my finger on it right away. It was only after I walked away and into my kitchen that I realized.

Alida recreated one of my mother-in-law, Carol’s, stained glass pieces that I had shared in this post the day after Carol passed away.

The original piece looks like this:

Stained Glass by CarolTo say I was gobsmacked is an understatement. I immediately raced up stairs to pull the photo up so I could compare. The gorgeous birthday gift is a recreation of this piece, there was no doubt about it.

Made for Linus by AlidaMade for Linus by Alida

Not only did Alida send me this beautiful piece she obviously worked long and hard on, but she also included two wonderful quilt tops for donation to my favorite blanket charity, The Linus Connection.

Color me speechless.

After the private thank you I sent, I had to share a huge public one. Thank you, Alida, for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
