Closing Time

Dear friends, in case you missed my last video, this was my big announcement: I will be closing up the Sewhooked Pattern shop, hosted on Etsy, on December 31st.

I’ve had a blast designing and selling over the years. I registered Sewhooked as a business back in 2006 and I’ve been working at it ever since. I’ve sold patterns to magazines, & websites, but most of all, I’ve sold them independently through a changing landscape of internet sales and to a variety of quilt stores.

A lot has changed, both personally and in the quilting world, since I first started in this business as an independent designer. What has become increasingly clear to me is that it’s time for me to move on to other adventures. I’m not leaving quilting or crafting, but I am closing up shop and will no longer be actively designing and I will no longer be selling patterns. There are lots of reasons, some of which I talk about on last week’s Talk to Me Tuesday.

Some important points: I’m not “leaving” or going away. Sewhooked.com will continue to exist and will still be a quilt and craft blog, but it will no longer be a business.

My free patterns, including all of those on Fandom In Stitches, will continue to be available. I will still run fandominstitches.com, but will be looking for more help to keep the website up-to-date and the Facebook communities blossoming.

2020 will be a year for contemplating what’s next and how to best be the person I choose to be.

Now through noon on December 31, 2019 is your last chance to purchase the patterns listed in my shop.

Thanks for the love and support all the years! 💜

Paddlin by Jennifer Ofenstein

And here we are: You’ll find Paddlin’ on page 20 of Vol. 13!

twitterpated with embroidery

These birds were inspired by a design I created some years ago, but never published. It wasn’t quite right, but I loved the birds! If you look closely, you’ll see the “Momma” bird from Paddlin’ is sitting on the ground, while the “babies” are up on the line.

mock up quilt.JPG

Just for fun, I put together a small quilt idea using four blocks,, two of which are in mirror image. I just love the wreath-inside-a-window effect!

Just like all of my patterns, Paddlin’ was designed in EQ7.

My Favorite Things. a Block of the Month by Jennifer Ofenstein

Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 12 Blog Tour

Vol12-blog-tour-this-week-socialmedia

Welcome to my post for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, vol. 12 Blog Tour!

I’m extra excited to share today’s patterns because it’s not only one of my favorite things I’ve shared with Quiltmaker, but it’s one of my favorite patterns that I’ve ever designed!

I had such fun creating this block and I hope you love it as much as I do!

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016

Here it is: Special Delivery!

You’ll find this red-wearing fella and his sleigh full of presents on page 19 of Vol. 12.

See more of my Sunbonnet Sue designs.

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016 To add a to the fun, I embellished my block with hand embroidery (patterns included in the magazine).

Special Delivery block by Jennifer Ofenstein, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 12, 2016

How about a snowflake? Here in Austin, Texas, it’s likely to be the only snow I see this year!

I also had a lot of fun playing with Special Delivery and combining this block with some of my other designs to see what kind of fun quilt layouts I could come up with.

Here are two of my favorites:

Table Runner idea with Special Delivery and On, Dasher! by Jennifer Ofenstein

Here, Special Delivery meets my reindeer block, On, Dasher! for a fun Christmas-themed table runner.

Quilt idea with Special Delivery and On, Dasher! by Jennifer Ofenstein

This layout is a bit more ambitious, with the same number of blocks as the table runner, but with the reindeer set in an arc. I just love this idea! Imagine this with a fun snowflake print fabric or lovely hand embroidered embellishments like oodles of snowflakes and reins for the reindeer team!

On, Dasher! A paper pieced pattern by Jennifer Ofenstein

Like On, Dasher? You can find him in my Craftsy Pattern Shop!

Just like all of my patterns, Special Delivery and the above fun layouts were designed in EQ.

My block in Vol. 11 of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks

Introducing Sandbox Sisters! These two little gals are inspired by two of my friends, Amber & Jewells. Love ya, ladies!

You can find the Sisters hanging out on the top left side of page 25.

Sandbox Sisters

If these girls remind you of Sunbonnet Sue, that’s because she’s one of my absolute favorites to design! I love her so much, she and her friends have an entire page right here on Sewhooked.

I used Kona cotton for the background and lots of fun scraps for the rest. I just love how their little shovels and sandals turned out!

See more Sunbonnet Sue!

Sandbox Sisters, EQ version

This is what the girls looked like before I made them in fabric.

Just like all of my patterns, this block was designed in EQ.

Scarecrow Surprise! In Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, vol. 6

I have a new friend to introduce to you today called Scarecrow Surprise!

This guy came about because I wanted something that said “autumn,” but was also playful and included a tiny bit of hand embroidery.

Scarecrow Surprise! In Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, vol. 6

You can find Scarecrow Surprise on page 30 of 100 Blocks Vol. 6. And look there to the right…I’m super excited to have Scarecrow Surprise right next to a wonderful pattern by Charise from Charise Creates! How awesome is that?

Scarecrow Surprise! In Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, vol. 6

Here’s something else fun… Scarecrow Surprise is on the cover, too!

*throws confetti*

He joins May Showers as 100 Blocks cover alumni!

Scarecrow Surprise!

What? You’re supposed to be scared of me!

I started with just a scarecrow, but after a couple of doodles, I quickly realized that he was a lonely old guy standing there all alone. I started thinking about what a scarecrow is actually supposed to do and I wondered how often a birds ignore the You Shall Not Land directive.

A lot, I bet!

Scarecrow Surprise! Penciled in face.

When I drafted this guy out, he had a plain face. After adding the bird to his shoulder, I realized what was missing…his reaction! Here it is penciled in on my first draft.

Scarecrow Surprise! Design in Progress

Here’s a little sneak peak of how the pre-published version of the pattern looked. Look, ma, no numbers!

And, of course, I have to share some variations!

Above is Stonehenge Scarecrow, Feeling Blue Scarecrow and Warm Colors Scarecrow!
