Trick or Treat Sue

Let’s be honest, most of you are here because of the quilts.

I’m totally okay with that.

While I do have many for sale patterns, I have many, many free ones.

Whimsical, fun, happy patterns are my favorite to create. To be frank (or Jennifer, as the case may be!), I make what I like. It’s as plain and simple as that. Making what I like makes me happy, and hopefully, you will feel that when you’re working on a pattern that I designed. If not, then I’m clearly doing it wrong!

Trick-or-Treat Sue, up at the top of this post, was created for a blog hop hosted by Soma over on Whims & Fancies last October.

She’s 10″ paper pieced and can be downloaded right here or over on Craftsy. This sweet Sue is just one of the over 50 magical Sunbonnet Sues that I’ve designed over the years. You can find all of her Magical Friends right here!

If you’re looking for even more quilty goodness for Halloween, try one of these blasts from the past, designed by me and available on the Harry Potter page over on my other site, Fandom In Stitches (click the image for the free pattern!):

Pumpkin cauldron

There are many, MANY more where these came from!

To make reliving the Crafts of Halloween Past even more fun for you, I’m offering a challenge with a prize!

Quilts from 100 Blocks, Fall 2013

Make any of my Halloween projects or patterns posted during the course of the month and post a photo to the Sewhooked flickr group tagged “halloween.”

At the end of the month, I’ll draw a winner to receive a free copy of Quiltmaker’s Quilts from 100 Blocks, which includes my pattern Corn Maze!

Heck, I’ll even sign it, if you like! ;)

TFiOS Clouds for hand embroidery or applique TFiOS Clouds to paper piece

Left: TFiOS Clouds, 7″ Hand Embroidery or Applique

Right: TFiOS Clouds, 8″ Paper Pieced

While organizing the #TFiOS Design Challenge over on Fandom In Stitches, I could not resist designing a couple of patterns myself.

Ehem.

The Fault in Our Stars has been one of my favorite books since the first time it was placed into my hot little hands.

As well as being a beautifully written, it is also an extremely quotable book. With that in mind, I created two versions of the same image, both just waiting for Your Words Here.

The design on the above left will work either for applique or for hand embroidery.

The design on the above right is paper pieced, but will also work just fine if you’d like to embroider the clouds after piecing.

And now, a couple of my favorite quotes, grabbed from GoodReads.

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

“Some people don’t understand the promises they’re making when they make them,” I said.

“Right, of course. But you keep the promise anyway. That’s what love is. Love is keeping the promise anyway.”

“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”

“You are so busy being YOU that you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are.”

Jack Leaves The Light On

Jack Leaves The Light On, $6 on Craftsy

How about a fun new Halloween-themed table runner pattern? This set is SUPER easy to piece and crazy versatile!

Just need the blocks? Use them for whatever you like!

Want a quick table runner? Piece the three blocks, add borders as shown in the pattern and you’re good to go!

Jack Leaves The Light On

I shared a Jack-O-Lantern block in my video yesterday and mentioned that the pattern was coming soon.

How’s this for soon?!

I originally designed this fun piece for a magazine. They passed on the pattern and it’s been collecting dust in my sewing room ever since.

Jack Leaves The Light On
Tis the season for Trick-or-Treat and what better way to decorate than a fun table runner?

Jack Leaves The Light On Jack Leaves The Light On
Pattern includes two, full-color 8″ block patterns and instructions to create the table runner shown above.

Jack Leaves The Light On - Vertical Option Jack Leaves The Light On - Vertical Option with added sashing
Want a wall hanging instead? Simply piece the blocks vertically! The same instructions will apply to the wall hanging shown on the left as the original table runner. Slightly more fabric will be needed for the example on the right.

Jack Leaves The Light On
How about a longer table runner? Just add more blocks! I love a little versatility!

Name That Mustache, Week 1!

Mustachio 2.0

During the Great Sewhooked Revamp of 2013, many of my patterns have undergone updates and all around improvements.

Mustachio! is no exception.

A pattern set including 12 paper pieced mustaches, Mustachio! is one of my more ridiculous designs created for my own amusement.

Hey, if you can’t make stuff that entertains you, then what’s the point, right?!

During the revamp process, I decided these mustaches REALLY need names. I love to name the things I make and am not entirely sure how these guys ended up with monikers Mustache 1, Mustache 2, etc. Boo, that’s no fun!

Mustache!

In an effort to make them more interesting and fun, I came up with some tentative names but quickly realized I could really use some help!

That’s where you come in to help me NAME THAT MUSTACHE!

Name That Mustache is a weekly challenge for my readers throughout the month of October.

The rules are simple:

  • Share a name idea for one or more mustaches in each week’s post, making sure to include the mustache number.
  • Comments must be made on Sewhooked during that week’s post. For example Week 1: Mustache #2 names must be commented on this post.
  • At the end of each week, I’ll pick my favorites and that will be the name of that mustache pattern!
  • The winners will receive a fat quarter, a free PDF copy of the mustache pattern he or she named AND I will include the winner as the namer on that pattern!

In November, Mustachio! will be updated and all of these fun mustaches will be available individually…for the first time ever! To celebrate and help a good cause, during the month of November, I will donate $1 to Movember for the sale of each Mustachio! pattern!

Black and Green

The Black Gate of Mordor

So, I’ve been doing SOME THINGS!

Something I’ve been sitting on for quite some time until it was released on Fandom In Stitches is The Black Gate. I took a bit of artistic licensed with the design, because as any Tolkien reader will know, you can’t actually see Mt. Doom from The Black Gate. But hey, I really wanted the mountain in my quilt, so there it is!

You can get the pattern for free as part of Not All Who Wander Are Lost, a Lord of the Rings Block of the Month hosted by Lilja over on Fandom In Stitches.

In other related Fandom In Stitches goodness, the #tfios Design Challenge is underway! If you’re a John Green reader and enjoy designing, please do check it out! We’d love to have you participate and share your designs inspired by The Fault in Our Stars, which I would venture to say is one of the best books I have ever read.

Challenge details are right here.

Momma's got a brand new bag!On a personal crafty note, I finished a project for myself that I’ve been wanting to tackle for a while. This spiffy little bag  was made for a special reason and was created entirely out of fabric I had on hand, some of which were just scrappy bits and pieces. It fills a need for me that I’ve wanted to do something about for quite some time. I’ll talk about it more on next week’s TTMT!

I Want My Mummy

I Want My Mummy on Craftsy

Nah, I’m not having a nervous breakdown from all the stuff on my proverbial plate!

It’s the end of September, which means my favorite month, OCTOBER, is almost here! Cooler weather, soup, the possibility of wearing my favorite sweater and and and…HALLOWEEN!

After the recent epic revamp of Sunbonnet Sue’s Magical Friends, a few “friends” seemed to be missing! Notably among them was a mummy for Monster Madness.

So here he is as a bonus pattern not included in the original set: I Want My Mummy!

Monster Madness on Craftsy

Now, the question is, what other Magical Sue is still wandering around the ephemeral parts of my noggin waiting to come out?!

Reminder: ALL Sewhooked printed patterns are 1/2 price on ETSY (no coupon needed) and will be gone after September 30. That’s a week from yesterday…eek!

Some Real Things

In an effort to 1) clean out my overflowing sample bins and 2) help my kiddo pay for her college expenses, I’m doing something I rarely do.

I’m selling stuff I made.

Patterns? Sure, I sell those all the time, and nothing gives me more pleasure than being able to share those with you.

There’s something just a little different about selling projects that I worked on with my hot little hands. Everything I work on evokes memories and feels like a little piece of me.

My kiddo is worth it and I have far more samples than I will ever, ever need. Most of these things are one of a kind and the grand majority of them were for The Book That Wasn’t. It feels good to share them with you and move on to new things!

These are the first few goodies I’ve got up for offer:

Tooth Fairy Door Hanger

Tooth Fairy Door Hanger

Dollar included…because why not?! I came up with this idea after the Tooth Fairy was constantly misplacing the pillow each of my kiddos used to put their lost teeth in.

Garden Fairy Tote

Garden Fairy Tote Bag

I seriously love this bag…click through to see the inside and back. Inspired by fairies…and fabric!

Saturday Morning Monster Movie Wall Hanging

Saturday Morning Monster Movie Wall Hanging

A combination of Monster Madness and Classic Films…love this piece. As a kid, I loved watching black and white monster movies on Saturday morninings.

Three Witches Log Cabin Table Runner

Sweet Skating Sue

She really is sweet…I loved quilting her, too!

Finished projects not for you? The block patterns used in these projects are available here.
