Free Pattern Friday – As You Wish

free-pattern-friday

Welcome back to Free Pattern Friday! Today, I thought we’d do something a little different.

In a shocking turn of events, today’s patterns are not paper pieced!

As you’re probably already aware, in addition to living it up here on Sewhooked, I also run Fandom in Stitches, a fandom quilting website.

One of the best parts of Fandom in Stitches are the awesome quilt-alongs that we host there!

What makes a quilt along different from the multitude of individual patterns we share is that an event includes not only the blocks to make the quilt but also instructions for putting the quilt together, what I think of as the “final layout.”

As You Wish: A Princess Bride Quilt & Stitch Along took place on Fandom in Stitches in 2014. We had lots of amazing designers contributing patterns to hand stitch and paper piece.

As You Wish had two final options, both designed by yours truly.

Both quilt patterns can be used with any 7″ (7 1/2″ blocks). You can even fussy cut a fun fabric or use pre-printed fabric book pages.

This is my own quilt top was made using the Four Patch pattern. After a couple of false starts, it is officially the next of my UFOs in line for me to quilt (hence the not-so-fabulous photo!). Thinking about quilting this is what inspired me to revisit these two layout patterns I created for As You Wish. 🙂

And now, on to the next block!

A reminder of how this works:

PPV was my 2014 Block of the Month. This project was inspired by old-fashioned, hand-pieced quilt blocks. Because I LOVE paper piecing, I couldn’t help but create my own versions of traditional patterns I love using my favorite technique.

Quilting along with us is easy! The Paper Piecing Vintage quilt pattern already exists, so you don’t have to anxiously await each pattern to be released.

We’re making this quilt together, one block at a time, as a group. We’ll be making two blocks a month. I’ll prompt you on the second and fourth Monday to remind you which block to work on next. With a little work and a little luck, we’ll have a finished quilt top by the end of June!

Get the completed quilt pattern (more info below) from CRAFTSY or ETSY for $10 (previously $12). If you already own this pattern, you are ready to go!

Individual blocks now available by popular demand: If you want to make just one or two blocks from the set, I am releasing these patterns individually as we go. (Link to purchase Block 7  below.)

07 july 1

Today’s pattern, Block 7 (July 2014), is Lily of the Valley. You can find it beginning on page 33 in Paper Piecing Vintage, or you can purchase JUST this block pattern here.

All patterns for PPV are 6″ & 12″ (w/o seam allowance). The size you make is up to you.

The vintage version (above) is from my 2014 PPV.

My 2017 PPV Halloween Quilt Block

Block 07 - Lily of the Valley

I continue to have a fantastic time choosing fabrics for my Halloween version of PPV. I love the combination of these fun lime jack-o-lanterns with the wonky swirls!

for me.JPG

This is my color inspiration, created in EQ (subject to change as I quilt along!).

Since I’m using a lot of Halloween scraps, I’m also cutting the piano keys as I go from the leftover fabrics from each block. It will be a huge time saver at the end!

If you’d like to do a little planning, too, there is a coloring page included in the complete pattern on page 64.

Patreon!

This is a little long, so please bear with me.

I LOVE TO SHARE:  my once a week crafty show & tell via Talk to Me Tuesday, free patterns here on Sewhooked or over on Fandom in Stitches, quilting communities on Facebook, photos on Instagram, quilt-alongs. giveaways, swaps.

I love it ALL.

Over the years, I’ve tried many ways to keep my patterns low cost and to make them as easy as possible to share with you all while still providing an income for me. I’ve published printed patterns, sold to quilt stores, sold patterns to magazines, published online both individually and through various digital media, and I’ve participated in all kinds of events.

After more than a decade of self-publishing, I am currently barely making enough to cover the costs of creating my patterns.

The funny thing is that this hasn’t discouraged me at all. I love doing all these things and I don’t want to stop. I know you all enjoy my work because you tell me with your emails and comments and you show me with the photos of the projects you’ve created from my patterns, both free and purchased. I feel your love every time I post a new video or pattern. You are my online family!

With that in mind, I’m going to try something completely different.

Patreon.

If you’re a fan of YouTubers, PodCasters, or other online creators, then Patreon probably isn’t going to be news to you. For those of you who don’t know what it is, Patreon allows fans of internet creators like myself to support their work directly by becoming their Patrons. You’ll find YouTubers, podcasters, artists, musicians, and more on Patreon.

And now, you’ll find a quilter

pa·tron
/pātrən/
noun
1. a person who gives financial or other support to a person, organization, cause, or activity.

I’ve joined Patreon as a creator with the goal of eventually being able to share all of my new content for free.

Yeah, free. That means patterns, too, and not just on Friday, but always.

How can you help make this happen? For as little as $1 per month, you can help support me as I dip my toe into uncharted territory. Over the course of an entire year, that’s the price of purchasing a single yard of quilt store quality fabric or a single quilt pattern.

Do you have to? Absolutely not. Sometimes, a dollar a month is too much to ask. Any of the content that I release for free will be free to everyone, just as it has been in all the years I’ve been sharing.

If this little experiment works out, my plan is to host an absolutely free quilt along right here on Sewhooked during the second half of 2017. This QAL will include an entirely new quilt design by me. It’s fun and versatile and, in my own opinion, not like anything I’ve done before. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Have experience with Patreon? Suggestions? Ideas? Leave them in comments!

Welcome back to our Paper Piecing Vintage Quilt Along (#PPV2017)!

Block Six marks our middle point in this project!

A reminder of how this works:

06 June (2)

Today’s pattern, Block 6 (June 2014), is Sweet Basket. You can find it beginning on page 28 in Paper Piecing Vintage, or you can purchase JUST this block pattern here.

All patterns for PPV are 6″ & 12″ (w/o seam allowance). The size you make is up to you.

The vintage version (above) is from my 2014 PPV.

My 2017 PPV Halloween Quilt Block

Block 06 - Sweet Basket

What can I say? The block is called Sweet Basket and this fun fabric made me think of a Trick-or-Treat bag. It was a simple choice to make!

Making the 12″ block? Precut 3″ squares and then cut those in half on the diagonal for easy piecing of the triangles. You can make them a bit smaller, but I like a little wiggle room.
