Pocketses

Make a pocket for workout pants from an old tee.

I am not an athlete and I never have been. I kind of loathe exercise and would rather be sewing. Ehem. That said, I do try to take care of myself. Seriously, I’m 40 and I’d rather not fall apart as I get older.

I have a fabulous collection of yoga pants and jersey shorts of varying ages. These are my favorites for taking a long walk in the morning, something my hubby and I have been making an effort to do on a regular basis (see above comment about falling apart).

One of the best parts of these walks is that I usually text with my best friend while we’re out.  My best friend, my husband and I have all known each other for about twenty years. We all shared a house in college and we’re all friends. Eli and I live in Austin. Jewells lives in Albuquerque. Texting gives us a way to walk together despite the geographic distance. It’s kind of awesome and I look forward to it every day.

What’s driven me crazy for ages is that my favorite workout pants have no pockets. No place for keys. No place for a phone. That’s great if I’m not leaving my house, but for a long walk when I want to take my phone and I want easy access to it? Not so much. I’ve tried pouches, hip bags, and neck slings. They all make me crazy. I just want a pocket!

And then this happened…

My hubby has been cleaning out his closet. He’s 6’5″ and I’m 5’5″. I love his big tees for sleeping in and sometimes I do things like turn them into pants or girl shirts for myself.

He pulled out a plain grey tee that had a pocket on it. I looked at that pocket and it hit me that it’s the perfect size for my cell phone, so I grabbed my handy Havel seam ripper (best seam ripper EVER!), and removed the pocket.

When I flipped it over, WHAM!, I realize it I can use the bottom of the tee to make more pockets just like it!

This was a serious case of “Why did I not think of this before?!”

This is the pocket I Removed from the tee. It is an approximately 6″ square before the bottoms and sides have been folded in, including the seam.

I cut a 6″ strip from the bottom of the t-shirt, leaving the hem intact. I then subcut that 6″ strip into 6″ squares. Using the original t-shirt pocket that I removed from the same shirt, I pressed the squares to match. I used Best Press and steam to get them seams to stay. My iron was a little over enthusiastic with the steam…

This is the original t-shirt pocket on navy yoga capris. I lined it up just below the elastic and the string in the waistband.

Pins are good, just to keep everything in place.

I stitched around each pocket using a ball point needle and a stretch stitch. Ball point needles are made for stitching through stretchy fabrics like jersey and makes stitching it much, much easier. Stretch stitches have “give” so that when the fabric stretches, the thread doesn’t snap. Most sewing machines will have at least a basic stretch stitch. A narrow zig zag works just as well.

In the end, I placed all the pockets in the same spot, on the left hip. It’s been a couple of days since the addition of the pockets, and I LOVE them. My phone fits perfectly and it’s easy to grab when I get a text from my bff. I can even keep my house key in the bottom and it doesn’t interfere with my phone at all.

So, what became of the rest of the shirt?

XXL Tee to Tank TopI used one of my favorite tank tops to as a template for this. This was the length after removing the 6″. I cut off the sleeves and just serged up the side seams so it matches my other tank top. Wallah! One new work out top and 5 pockets from one t-shirt! I still have the sleeves and a few squares from the bottom, just in case I need to add spontaneous pockets to anything else!

Stitch A Little Happiness

Bluebonnet to Hand Embroider, just $2 on Craftsy, 7″ x 9 1/2″

This has been the summer of stitching for me. Almost immediately after finishing my last block for the Doctor Who Stitch Along (it posts on Fandom In Stitches next week…so exciting!), I started thinking about what to stitch next. While digging through some old stencils, I found a bluebonnet I designed ages ago and the lightbulb went on! The bluebonnet idea was doubly perfect, because I was also thinking about what to give my mom for her birthday.

Bluebonnet Stencil

This is the original stencil, created for a class I taught several years ago. I’ve never made this stencil available to the public and it seemed perfect for conversion to hand embroidery.

Bluebonnet Quilt Square

After stitching my bluebonnet in a variety of stitches, I added simple 2 1/2″  sashing to each side of the white 12 1/2″ square to create a 16 1/2″ block.

The background fabric is Sketch by Timeless Treasure. I have another big project coming in the same fabric soon…Mmmm, can’t wait to share that one! 😉

Bluebonnet PillowThe simple quilt block became a pretty pillow that I gave to my mom for her birthday which is coming up in just a few days (it was an early present!). She lives in a country house and her decor is green and blue, so…perfect! The pillow is shown here in my own squashy chair.

You can stitch my Bluebonnet, too. It’s just $2 on Craftsy!

Tiny Bits of Silk

bookmark made from Dupioni silk scraps

I received a few bits of silk scraps in a bag of yummy fabric oddments. I almost, almost swept the silk bits into the bin because they were so teeny tiny.

Then I thought of a friend that loves silk and has been having a bit of a rough time lately. What to do with those tiny scraps?

How about a bookmark?

bookmark made from Dupioni silk scraps

Made using a heavy-weight double sided fusible inside and stitched the pieces on wherever they would fit. Each seam was finger pressed and then I used decorative stitches on my sewing machine to embellish.

Miracle of miracles, I had a matching Sulky thread that was just perfect for what I wanted to accomplish.

Some stitching detail. This kind of project is always so zen for me!

bookmark made from Dupioni silk scrapsI know this little bookmark won’t solve any of my friend’s problems, but I hope she knows that I’m thinking of her and at the very least this will give her a smile.

In an effort to spread a little love around this week, I will give giving a free magazines from my stash to 5 different readers!

Ready, set…comment!

Remember the lavender Kenmore?

The bobbin case came in the middle of the drama of my week, and there it sat for almost 36 hours before I had the wherewithal to even look at it.

Fortunately, I had one whole bobbin in my collection that fit the machine and it turns out, she sews just fine with all her pieces back together!

Patched

Patched dishtowels

I’ve been patching dishtowels with leftover 2 1/2″ squares. I used random squares and a simple zig-zag stitch, putting a patch on each side wherever my (favorite!) dishtowels were getting thin.

I don’t know why, but it makes me happy to see the different-colored patches sprinkled on these old towels. 🙂

Unusual Sources

United Federation of Planets, embroidered

United Federation of Planets symbol, hand embroidered on cotton fabric with black DMC.

If you watched this week’s Talk To Me Tuesday, you’ve already seen this little bit of geekery. I thought a close-up photo might be nice to share.

Recently, I stumbled across an awesome set of Star Trek vector graphics by dridgett while looking for something totally different.

Since it’s no secret that I’m a Big Ole Geek, it’s probably no surprise that I thought the symbols would be perfect for stitching! I have a small collection of Star Trek quilt blocks, patterns available on Fandom In Stitches, and I’m thinking this one will add nicely to my growing pile.

Love For Lily, A Thank You

Two weeks ago, I told you about Lily, the kitten my sister and her husband adopted after finding her abandoned near my parents’ home out in the country.

This is her story, and our thank you.

We now have all the money we need to pay for Lily’s medical expenses. We might even have a little left over to donate to our local Humane Society.

We quite literally can’t thank you enough.

Click here to learn more about Lily’s story.

Stocking for Lily
Here’s a little something I made for Lily. I was lucky enough to act as her post-surgery kitten sitter this week while my sister and brother-in-law were at work. She was a joy to be with every day and I will miss my mid-day kitten break!

Don’t miss my Blog Hop Party Giveaway! I have a free pattern and a fun giveaway, too!

Homes For The Holidays

Homes For The Holidays

It’s raining in Austin.

Beautiful, wonderful, life-giving rain. After a year of drought, it’s a magical sound.

Rain is not, however, conducive to taking quilt photos. I love photographing my quilts outside. This so-so photo was taken in-between showers. It’ll have to do for now because I will trade good photos for rain any day!

“Homes for the Holidays” started as a pile of cottage blocks from a 2009 swap on the now defunct All About Paper Piecing (the site is still there, but deactivated).  I free-hand designed the paper pieced trees and just kept adding until the quilt top was a  nice lap size!

This project made my UFO to do list for two years running: 2010 and 2011. It’s good to move it to the “completed” list!

My family always holds off on decorating for Christmas until after my son’s birthday on December 2. We had a house full of boys last night and this morning the celebration is officially over.

We’ll be decorating tonight after I spend my afternoon at Honey Bee Quilt Store for Open House for January – May classes and then “Homes for the Holidays” will officially be in circulation!

Happy Sunday!
